Please tell me that you've included a change of pants in that zip file.

At first, I thought "wow, Rygar was on SMS and I never knew". Now I know why I never knew. It wasn't worth mentioning. I appreciate the effort and the run in and of itself is excellent. But maybe it's just the fact that I've been spoiled by the NES version that keeps me from voting Yes on this video. (Due to circumstances beyond your control, of course.)

I'm a bit torn on this. If this does get published, wouldn't it be some sort of double standard? That aside, I thought it was enjoyable.

I'd like to see this take off. I've played around a bit with the savestates and slow motion capabilities of WinVICE and while they are lacking when compared to the features of such [modified] emulators as Snes9x, etc... with a few adjustments, I see it working.

When you get out of the pool after getting the glowing key, use the other kid to go ring the doorbell (instead of going to push the gargoyle like in the movie). When you emerge from the kitchen, you will get caught by Ed
That's what I did in a few of my previous runs. The gargoyle method is faster because Ed won't respond to the second doorbell ring until he has returned to his room. However, I've done some thinking and some testing (desperately trying to find ways to get the movie to less than 7 minutes), and I've found a few improvements. The new movie's time should be about 6:55.
I realize that this thread is a bit dated, but I'm curious as to how the progress on this is going. What kinds of optimizations did you have in mind?

I like these findings. They are impressive, and I wouldn't mind seeing how they would affect the current leveling strategy (and game time.) Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the appropriate SNES9X version to watch the run currently on the site..

I was so surprised to see something like this on the front page today. Watching it now, and I'll get back with my comments. :D Edit: I'd also like to add that the audio clipping is part of the game, even on a real N64. That's in part to bad programming on the developers' parts. Edit 2: I said I'd get back to the boards after having seen the movie. Honestly, I believe that the real entertainment comes to those who have played and/or completed the game once already as those who haven't are going to wonder "wtf". The level design abuse is excellent. It's too bad that such baaaaad frame rates have to ruin what could've otherwise been great. Still, I enjoyed this very much. So I'm going to hit this up with a "yes" vote.

The game seems a lot more interesting to watch a TAS of with a WIP attached to it. Thanks :) I'll definitely be looking forward to seeing more of the same essence of awesome.

Saxxon. Please explain how your previous post relates to the discussion about this submission?
No, because there is a place in the rules where it says that a TAS of the game must be entertaining. The OoT run entertained many, while the SC2 one did not.
I was referring to the discussion you have quoted, actually. Although loosely. I'll add something constructive when time permits :)
I knew what you were replying to, my point was that it was a pretty large post to contest a pretty unrelated tangent, and I'd rather we not bring the good old "speed vs entertainment" war into this topic just because someone mentioned star control.
My apologies. It's a part of the overall reaction to posted videos that I dislike... Back to the topic. I watched the first video completely a while ago. Then this one shows up. I'm not a TAS expert by any means, but there are a few things that stood out. Raiscan pretty much covered everything and more :\ Still, sub 2 hours is excellent progress. I'd never originally thought it possible until having seen it in action here. There were some parts that I used fast forward such as some dialog parts - but that's because there's nothing new there. Also, for the viewer's entertainment and a little blurb to go along with the video, why not put some of the techniques you've used and/or what your main focus was while doing the run? Perhaps some trouble you've run into or a discovery you made while playing.

Tool-Assisted Speedrun != Tool-Assisted Entertainmentrun. Some videos aren't particularly interesting or entertaining, but they exist to show what can be abused and those who have played the game in the past can appreciate it. It's usually the people who haven't played those games that won't quite understand how epic some runs really are. What do you think would happen if we removed every non-star movie from the site? Not all movies are of equal entertainment either. And that's subjective anyway. Just my two cents.

Samurai Goroh and I are working on a soft subtitle track for use with the AVI. There's no hard subtitles in the AVI other than the usual branding near the beginning. Because Gencon is happening in a few hours I'm going to be gone from internet and sanity until like Monday but after that I'll be working on the subs pretty much constantly until they're done.
Hey, no rush. Thanks and have fun :) What type of subtitle filter will I need then?

So, are the subtitles in the AVI? I am currently watching it, but not seeing any. I wasn't sure if they were finished.

These are wicked! I'm glad to see you're progressing through this at such an amazing rate. Have you considered a single-segment run, or are you still planning the levels individually?

Is this still being worked on? If not, I was considering picking it up as a potential first TAS. All the acrobatics would make for a very interesting run. For those of you who have worked with this game in the past, is there any frame-saving information you can share? I'll take a good look at all the guides around. But the intricacies of a TAS surpass what can normally be found there :)

I'd definitely watch it. It's a great demonstration to show how far we've really come on some games. This game is one of the most analyzed games and someone's always finding something to improve on.

In case you haven't tried disabling "sync sound to CPU", it has helped.
This doesn't cause desyncs when playing back video files? Edit: Is it because of the system specs? Running Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2x 2.8gHz, 2 gigs ram, geforce 7 series... just curious.

It also has better sound and supposed more precise timing to a real SNES but other than that I can't see what else 1.51 offers that 1.43 doesn't already.
1.51 sound crackles. A lot. Changing sound cards, changing sample rate, changing buffer size... same result. When playing anything, videos or games, it crackles. 1.43 does not. However, it would make no sense to change versions completely if you've already started and completed any significant portion of the run in a specific version. People seem to be slowly migrating to 1.51.

Vote: Did you like watching this movie? (Vote after watching!)
I think some of us are forgetting what it says up there. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, though. I thought it was okay-ish. It is a great demonstration of the glitch, but I guess I've been spoiled by the full run of the game. Still, I enjoyed it for what it was and even brought on the popcorn. Don't count this as an obsoletion of the one already up here, though. The full run is a whole lot more entertaining.

<3 This was such a huge improvement... normally I like to put two emulators side by side and play the improvements that way... but this was far too awesome of an improvement for that :)

I'd really enjoy something like this. It would at least show everyone how much of the game we really missed. Not to mention it would require a complete reworking of the paths used and more strategy. People who have been following this game's runs since the first would really appreciate something like this.
