Since they're both different, wouldn't it be better to knock out both? My understanding would be that if Japan is harder it could obsolete the US course but a run of both courses would obsolete the standalone Japan. Finishing all unique content etc.

Nice work! Wasn't expecting such a big improvement here.
Thanks. There's 2 games on the list I felt like I could do. This one and Lee Trevino. I don't know if I have the patience left to do both courses though haha.

Interesting! Nice find. Thanks for pointing it out. Do you know offhand if NES works the same way? I will look at getting a proper version of this new ending and I apologize for this slipping past me. Also gonna post this to SRC and break the hearts of the RTA runners. :p

I was going to make a Trivial Pursuit pun but it would have been too easy to go after. I'll see myself out. In all seriousness though this discussion makes me happy and I agree with the consensus so far re: definitions.

Awesome! I wasn't expecting to see this game show up again. Interesting strategy changes at the end of the Russia bout. The characterization in this game is really ridiculous with the design of all the arenas.
Russia was by far the hardest team to get any sort of manips on. Shadow was a cakewalk in comparison.

https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638039540615088282 Went through on medium and saved around 22s. Faster ball speed is nice though it didn't seem to help on the penguin level.

I wonder: Is that why you never submitted a Battle Chess TAS despite speedrunning multiple categories of that game?
Pretty much.

I would definitely prefer it to be redone. Doing a run on a middle difficulty is an unusual case, but if it's the fastest difficulty, then you should absolutely use it.
Roger that, thanks. I'll probably get to it this weekend.

Have you tried higher difficulties? It looks like the ball moves faster in them. Medium especially looks interesting, because the ball moves faster but the opponent does not, so you get some freebies when they fail to even touch it when the ball is served.
I just ran through level 1 on medium and it was definitely faster by like 10 seconds. Hard wasn't really much harder but I lost out on the freebies, so at least for level 1, Medium > Hard > Easy. If you'd like I can redo this on either med or hard. I'd personally go for medium since it should yield the fastest overall time but I'm curious to know what you think about that.

Wasn't saying it should be rejected (though I see how it would come across that way and I apologize) but more for my own knowledge. I've refrained from working on some TASes (not this game specifically, SpaceColonizer did a great job and I very much would not have haha) due to the rules being the rules. Knowing what I now know is good as I'll be less picky about the stuff I submit.

Examples of games currently not allowed in standard are: Creative games, such as Mario Paint Free objective sandbox games, such as Harvest Moon Game show games, such as Jeopardy and Family Feud Has that rule changed/is it on the table to be changed?

Interesting, I'm a big fan of the PS1/PC version, never knew there was a GBC version. Strategies used look optimal, although at 9 points in Stage 3 it looks like another ball could be spawned? But maybe the opponent would return it. Yes vote.
I loved the PS1 version back in the day. The extra ball can only be spawned while a powerup is active and it runs out before then so hitting the penguins there wouldn't do anything special.

Requesting the submission file be replaced with this one: https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638022361809409816 as it is a 10s improvement after a rework.

Your bot never ceases to amaze me. I feel like it's getting to a point where it can figure out optimality in almost anything. I wish I understood how things worked haha. Yes vote for sure!

I looked into the code a bit. There is exactly one frame before every shoot-off (3502 for the first one in this submission) where it runs a subroutine (0xB1AC) which checks to see if the Start button is pressed (by checking bit 3 in 0x58) - if the button is pressed, it returns from that subroutine which begins the code that starts up the break (0xC253), otherwise it continues with the shoot-off and doesn't start the break until after it's done. This specific subroutine seems to be only called in the frame before the shoot-off, and is not called for any other part of the game, as far as I have searched. It's not used for any other instance where the Start button can be used, such as the title screen, main menu, or when exiting the game. This leads me to believe this is some sort of undocumented code to skip the shoot-off. For this reason, I'm requesting that the shoot-off skip is not used for this run. I'm setting the submission to Delayed until this is sorted out.
Thank you for diving into that. Here is a replacement file with shootoffs added: https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638004096375355758

https://tasvideos.org/3589M It looks like your first fight is faster, so maybe you can improve the other 2 from there, but you certainly don't need to do the training sequence.
Wow, I swear I searched to see if anyone had submitted this before I started it. Thanks for pointing that out. I don't know how I missed this. Must be getting old haha. I'll look into the training skip. Thanks for the heads up!

Some more info about the shoot-off skip: it turns out you only have to hold Start to skip it, Select is not necessary. This skip is not mentioned in the game's documentation, but Start is used in-game to open up a prompt to exit the game. It's possible that this skip is just some bug with how the screen transitions interact with the exit menu, and it's also possible that this is some leftover debug code. Since Select is not necessary, this is looking less like a code and I'm leaning towards the former. I'll look into it more.
Depending on what you find I'd be glad to rework it without that skip/bug/whatever if needed and just win the shoot offs instead.

Board games in general typically have a lot of exploitable AI/RNG and that alone makes me feel like they're adequate for TASing. With the relaxed rules of Standard it'd be great to see board games make the cut.
