If that is your job then inspire by sharing new ideas, or producing WIP's. Tool assistance is also a circumstance where the handicapped can perform the superhuman in videogaming. I never knew you were handicapped. You might as well call me racist for shooting down the posts of a guy before I knew they were not the same creed as my own. Before this degenerates further.. I know you are excited about this as much as I and others are (it's a popular game) but please refrain from posting anything else unless you genuinely have something to contribute. Don't pretend you have, just to bump it or to encourage posting. Read the rules. You've been brought up on this several times before in the forums. If I have to get penalised here, fine. It's just there are enough pages with posts similar to this one I have made, or the ones you have made already. Anything from this point on I will only provide contribution based on tests.

Please stop bumping to pretend to contribute to the topic. If you read the posts above, as pointed out kindly by another post you can only multiply your HP by double as maximum, and even if my theory worked you would still need to do a hell of a lot of grinding. 7777 will be of no use. Tifa and Slots are quicker even in practice. 1111 has no significance at all. At this stage practically all the timesavers have been planned, and just a matter of execution now. Good luck antd and others!

That rule applies to magic and summon materia only. Seeing as this will be a TAS speedrun antd or other contenders won't reach a level high enough where they will need magic or summon materia to reduce their stats. HP Plus is an independent materia type so HP Plus only adds health not depletes it.

You so just made that post up to keep this bumped! Ok. In regards to 7777HP...10% health is what you get per materia at stage 1. No point focusing on the levels after that as any bosses used with this strat would be much later on in the game (post Mideel). Let's say for arguments' sake the character you apply this to Cloud or Cid (IMO shouldn't be Tifa or Cait Sith) is approx. lvl. 19. by then. Say they have around 800hp. This is how far their HP could go... 800 > 880 > 968 > 1065 > 1172 > 1289 > 1418 > 1560 > 1716 (that's one weapon with max slots) 1716 > 1888 > 2077 > 2285 > 2514 > 2765 > 3042 > 3346 > 3681 (and an accessory at max slots!) Just wouldn't work, mate. There's the factoring in of buying 16 of this materia and an additional inventory time even if you manipulated the exp and hp points per level well enough later on in the game. Slots and Death Sentence shenanigans it is!

I think the focus should be on other time saving tricks, and worry about abuse of one measly attack in a revised or improved version of the TAS. At least have something to work with before judging it makes sense to me. Could easily argue tifa's attack would be all the same, pause glitch would be all the same. Garlands normal run doesnt care about abusing methods in such way why should a TAS?

I can confirm what antd has said with great delight :D You can flood the screen with enemies all controlled by input 1 or 2 (controller 1 or 2). What's even better is you can assign weapons to them like arrows. My personal favourite is Stage 1 running around as 15 odd mice on the map while spamming arrows at enemies. Or using the bear in stage 3/4 (forget which) and making him "fire bear" LOL! Debug mode is great fun, but what use it would have outside of superplay exhibition im not sure. 100% stealth kills would make things interesting.

If you can't skip 2-2, here are two benefits - That is Aeris' Fury Brand limit. Gives the other 2 players limit breaks. 4 hits for Tifa.

now you mention it, this happened when i was trying to see how quick i could exit midgar on the console, kept soft resetting and eventually kept playing through the game with my save. starting with 1-1 - 4-1 is pure rumour at the moment. what im on about is i earned 1-2, but then for some reason 2-1, 2-2 did not trigger and by disc 2/3 the character earned 3-1, 3-2 after a few battles. when you go to the limit screen in the menu 2-1, 2-2 are clearly missing. this has happened with other characters where i never bothered using them until disc 2 when i had to, then they skipped 1-2, 2-1, 2-2. hope that makes sense.

Okay regarding the limit breaks. There were several types of bugs in early builds of the game in each region. I know some of them are not just hearsay as I had the first release of PAL FFVII and USA FFVII. The following ones can definitely happen: *You can skip 1-2, 2-1, 2-2 limit breaks if a character is not used for a long period of time then made fairly active in battles later on in the game. While you benefit from powerful level 3 limits without much work, you lose the chance to equip a 4th level limit break. *You can learn all your limits naturally but the 4th limit cannot be learned (useless bug and a real bitch in normal circumstances)! Ideally you'd want to trigger bug #1 (Ungermax, Meteorain, Tifa's combos etc.). This bug is real but trying to figure out what sets it off is well....beyond me. Shame the Zone Mapping won't come in too handy, either.

Waffle- There are some time saving bugs with limits. Occasionally in a save file you will skip a whole level of limit breaks and so get either 1 or both level 3 limits. Sometimes (rarest condition) you start the game with all of theM! But this means you cannot enter Special Battle Arena in Golden Saucer (not that important to us as it's only an extra after Omnislash). I've been looking around for any conditions in RAM or codes that trigger either of these 2 conditions from the beginning point of the game but no joy yet. It's not really my forte so idk if anyone can find out how this happens? I don't know if this is considered cheating but...there's another bug during combat. It won't be fun to use during boss battles but here goes - if you take the disc out of the tray on actual hardware during a battle it stops the enemies performing any commands (though I'm sure in some cases this applies to you as well).

About Tifa and luck. Maybe you can make up for the luck by getting EXP Plus materia from the Golden Saucer the first time you visit. It would involve playing the 3D Boxing game 7 times, though which would take about 8 1/2 minutes (possibly less in TAS). The spare GP would also afford you 1 x X-Potion but if you already have one to pick up in the route i'd advise against getting it here because it eats up more time in field messages here. EDIT: Considering how late in the game you get w-item anyway it might be worth skipping it altogether :p I don't know any other purpose it could serve besides a boost in luck/strength during the final section of the game as well as a means of cloning powerful combat items. If you really want it though try getting from Bone Village instead. Might be faster than backtracking the tunnels.

Oh, one last thing..... It seems the Bone Village dig site (which needs to be visited twice in the game) has the potential to reward you some great items you may have missed including ones you can't go back and get when you do the digging game. Has this been considered at any point for luck manipulation as well? As far as I remember there are weapons to be found here at the very least, again something that can be luck abused which wasn't abused in the the speedrun attempts. EDIT: A useful map made by a GFAQer :p http://www.shillatime.org/bonevillage.jpg Steal Materia can also be gotten here on the PSx version.

Hey antd, I think getting the Deathblow materia from Gongaga might be a worthy bit of sidetracking after all. If you wanted to skip Cosmo Canyon and leave the DS enemy skill til later this, Slots, and other limit breaks could substitute in the mean time. And yes, let's focus on the run discussion. Garland's normal speedrun record on PSx was very good (considering the PSx version is slower than PC), and beating his record is a key aspect to TAS'ing this game. There are plenty of games that abuse the same tactic over and over on this site yet got much approval. To judge a multiple hour run's entertainment value by 1-2 tricks that aren't a huge amount of the run itself is trivial. Everyone will go "Yes" vote on this run anyway cos it's FFVII and well polished, so this is a silly thing to derail the thread about. Let's focus on the run like Waffle said. Back on topic: The Golden Saucer - seeing as many are whining about entertainment, can time be saved by wasting time here on the minigames? There are the Parasol and Flayer weapons for Aerith and Cid on the rollercoaster game. Wonder Square has a lot of useful accessories, materia etc. by doing the mini games or using your GP (which can be gotten very fast 300 a time from the boxing game). All materia, safety bit, crystal bangle from snowboarding. Also check this list of things for gp exchange if you decide not to go back to GS in disc 2 for the snowboarding, sub game or flayer: GP Exchange: You can exchange your GP for prizes here. The list is: 1GP: Potion 20 GP: Ether 80 GP: X-Potion 100 GP: Turbo Ether 300 GP: Gold Ticket (an unlimited-access pass to Gold Saucer) 500 GP: Carob Nut 1000 GP: Gil Plus 2000 GP: Exp Plus For a quick quick go on the boxing you can get your gold ticket there. One last thing about the gold saucer is the one thing you can get when you have to return there is a champion belt, arguably one of the best accessories in the game. Sure you could die instantly in battle square to save time, but who knows this might come in useful and in turn save time in making new battle strategies. Anywho just some ideas. I think the golden saucer has been overlooked in the past by farringa, garland, lolo etc. because of 2 things a TAS can tinker with which a speedrun can't - time and luck!

As far as how final time is determined I believe you should aim for fastest in game time as everyone else in the speedrunning community does this. Worth noting though you can't check the in game timer once you get to the final bosses. With that said artificially reducing the in game time i think would be a nono. looking at how this glitch works it doesnt seem to be doing that, right?

Hai :) I recommend you watch HKGoldenMrA's "all clear" videos and kniferun videos throughout the Bio/Resi series. He's a natural, and has perfected dodging outside of TAS means: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4nTCav6eho&feature=related That video there is part 1 of a Biohazard 3 Mercenaries run. He kills every enemy (yes every enemy) as Nicholai. If he can do it without TAS, I'm sure a TAS'er here would blow that out of the water. Even though the RE3 TAS proved a lot of existing strategies for speedrunningthe main scenario inefficient, a lot of HK's strats could be used for a RE/BH3 Merc Nicholai TAS.

One of the triggers is part of the route anyway, which is a bonus (going straight into the ShinRa HQ as opposed to the scenic route). However it also means you have to talk to his AVALANCHE buddies a bit (would only take 30-40seconds out of the run tops in 7th Heaven and the train sections). Leaving Midgar you have to pick a new party anyway you'd only waste a split second in a TAS doing that, you have to pick Red XIII and Barret to trigger another date point for Barret. After this point there's a couple of places you are meant to have him in your party or talk to him but they do not gravely affect the overall time. I'm just thinking though, say pessimisticly if you waste 2 minutes as opposed to the optimal time before the date scene to trigger Barret as your date, would the bits he skips save more than 2 minutes?

At your current rate I reckon 1hr46m maybe :D I'm not a TAS'er but I followed the old topics of Garland in GFAQ's and also made some suggestions in the SDA forum in the past 2 years about Midgar strategies (it is a fairly big chunk of the game, around 1/4 of it!) Excellent work so far, antd, and I was wondering if you are trying any of these out: *luck manipulation of the elevator in ShinraHQ 1st visit *alternate date sequence (would picking someone other than aeris turn out to be quicker in terms of text/dialogue? and owuld it be more entertaining in your view?) *running across the marsh where the midgar zolom is (can be done without chocobo or save resets) *using tifa to fight emerald weapon to boost ap+exp for the final battle *in garland's run he used a lot of grenades for midgar but would you be able to completely remove any need for going into the shop and buying these thanks to manipulating critical hits/deathblows? more gil and possible strat changes later on this way ;)

GarlandG's run may have battle strats somewhat unnecessary for a TAS but I wouldn't go slating a run and guide that set a benchmark for running the game under sub-10 for PSx. Some things worth noting though that could be taken advantage of in a TAS that he couldn't in his completed and test runs: -Critical hits at max possible chance (saves having to buy grenades and sidetrack en route throughout the early part of the game). -The lift in the ShinRa building can be used to avoid any fights on the way up (incredibly low proabability of getting all the safe flaws, but then this could be luck manipulated). -As seen in the WIP most of the encounters can be removed bar some that would get you to a lowest level required to fight some of the bosses. -in Gold Saucer GP boosting can be done by luck manipulating the 3D Boxing game in (is it Wonder Square?) should you need some of the items obtained by exchanging points.

I think you can get a maximum of 32-34 hit combos in SFEX PS1 series. Dhalsim is 31 hit, Garuda around the same.

There is another feature both games have which could involve a seperate category - Mission Mode. It is where for each character you have 16-20 different moves specials or combos you must perform for them. Depending on difficulty they are ranked E-A. Someone managed to find an optimum route on SDA a long year back on how to do EX+@'s missions a lot faster (due to loading times and lag reduction). That above would demonstrate a lot of skill. As some combos are pretty much near impossible to do in complete succession without a retry if you aren't TAS'ing :D Also I agree. Fighting games aren't usually run for speed, but usually a showcasing of AI humility, glitches, and extreme skill while keeping the time relatively low. Again EX's Arcade Mode would still benefit from this. There is an AI Gouki (Akuma in Eng regions) depending how well you play and he's rock solid! Would be interesting match up to see him!

I don't think there is much improvement you could possibly do on this run of the USA version. I'd say any more major improvements could only come from the JP version - Enemy placement and attributes (strength, speed, health), Text being 1 screen shorter, faster FMA skip. Enemy placements are almost all the same in the JP version but IIRC there were a couple of minor differences in health, speeds (you noted the wurm took 11 acids only, and I think Nemesis has different health in places, too). Again, amazing job :) I didn't think shaving over 5mins on that other time was possible. I think my jaw would need an operation to go back in place if you shave off more time!

OMG, insane time! Congrats, man!! I bet you'd raise hell with the JP version if this is the amazing time you got on just the US version!

If what you're saying is correct, even now time-wise you have overtaken the world record for console recorded speedrunning of Biohazard 3 :D congrats keep it up!

great :D keep it up! sorry i guess i didn't see the straight run properly in that alleyway. do you use the mines for the launcher? you might be able to pick up all the gunpowder in the cabin if you remove the mines before the worm fight. well done with the menu trick, menus dont add or subtract from the time btw but sure looks entertaining when you speed through them, so well done !!

very good man :) i think you got confused by what i mean. the room where you first meet the drain deimos monsters (the T shaped one with the lift and dead guy) I wasn't talking about after the cutscene as you definitely dodge to the right there. I was on about the straight path before the cutscene you turned to the left a little on your v1 just before you triggered the cutscene. You didn't need to do that :p on Resi every frame counts !!! ehehe. Another thing..do you pick up any gunpowder a in your current test runs? if so that dead guy has gunpowder A you might want to get it when you backtrack idk. might not be such a good idea actually as you lose frames kneeling down.
