Well, for one thing, it's possible to backflip onto the second rope from the left at the very beginning, which'll save a number of timeunits unless there are timing conflicts later on higher up in the level... edit: Nope, it actually works out rather well. Managed to get 212 my first run through, and that's not even close to optimized.

Wow, nice work on 3-6, 7 and 8. This is turning out quite nicely so far. :) However, 3-4 is bugging me. It's the slowest level so far, and the waiting for DK to flip the switch looks really bad. I don't know if anything can be done, but I can't help but wonder if there isn't a faster way to do that level. :/ Other than that though, I'm lovin' it.

I'm just posting to let you know that I cannot WAIT to see this when it's finished. Also so you're not the only person to have posted in this thread in the past month. :)

But, I don't understand why the delays involving the bats. Why not just fly all the way unstopped?
Yoshi's floating jump gets boosted if you bounce off of an enemy (or Koopa shell), so he uses them to make it over obstacles and reach the platform at the end, since it's higher than he would have been. Or at least that's my understanding of it.

I think I'm going to have to say Mischief Makers for N64. I wonder just how much the S times are beatable by.

So call it a demonstration or a tools-assisted demo.
I for one would not be at all opposed to either of these. Considering these are meant for entertainment, "demonstration" is more than appropriate.

Not for most games, but after watching the world record videos at vortiginous I have become a very impatient Super Monkey Ball player, trying over and over to complete a level as fast as possible, etc. The setup of the game lends itself quite well to this tactic, sure, but still.

Might as well do this, also: http://boards.bluegoop.net/archive/index.php/t-9521.html I seem to remember someone saying it's the 'using fly before someone sees you' that makes the trick work and that it could probably be reproduced elsewhere earlier in the game, but I don't know anything about that. It's worth looking into, though. And if all else fails it'd still be worth doing as written. :) Good luck with this.

I've never seen the term "speedrun" used for tool-assisted speedruns, though.
A few of the avi versions of tool-assisted runs have "speedrun" in the filename instead of the usual "timeattack," which is a bit confusing and misleading. :/ I don't see why something like "tool-assisted run" wouldn't work. It's still a little wordy, but only six letters longer than "time-attack. In my opinion, the "speed" is not especially necessary and also helps to differentiate slightly from traditional speedruns, which may help to reduce complaints. Plus, TAR makes an acceptably flexible acronym. :P

Ooof. Where'd you download it from where they didn't mention this was tool-assisted?

Only a minute into this but I'm liking it very much. Nice work. :) edit: Oh man, loved the part five minutes in with the drums as well as the rest after. The credits are almost as long as the movie itself though!

Voted yes. I'm not an expert on timeattacks so maybe I missed more, but beyond the "being next to blocks"/"jumping while on fire"/"dash-ducking" errors mentioned in the writeup, I thought the movie was well done and I enjoyed watching it all the way through. I may be biased, though; this is one of my favorite games. There may be some room for improvement but in my opinion it's good enough as it is now. :P

Well I'll be. This game is a lot more fun to watch than it is to play. :) I'll be watching this progress from the sidelines. Good luck Zer0 :)

A lot of people are probably going to disagree with me on this since it's a pretty close call between quite a few epic movies... and then this. Anyway, I'm going to nominate Bob Whoops' long run of Umihara Kawase. I'm not sure if having never played the game beforehand helped or hurt my enjoyment of it, but I definitely got a kick out of watching him catapult a little girl all over the place, and provide entertainment during the otherwise long boring boss "battles." I loved the frog and crab wrangling he did, along with bringing himself to the brink of death numerous times only to slingshot back. In summary: not too long, not too short, varied action with very entertaining waiting periods, and unfamiliar subject material (on a side note, a friend and I each ended up losing about a week of our lives trying to play through the game after watching the movies in the speedrun competition thread) add up to equal my (most likely meaningless) vote in a very heated field.

I agree wholeheartedly. I've been sitting here for about eight minutes now trying to back up why this movie is so great, but no words come to mind. It's deserving of this award, that's for sure.

That's a strange glitch, can't say I've ever run into it while playing on a real Gameboy... but then again it's been years since I've played the game. :P I'm really glad to see someone doing this game, it and Wario Land II are probably my two most wanted run at the moment. So far the run looks pretty good, I didn't see any particular section that looked sloppy or otherwise obviously improvable... take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I think finishing the movie is a perfectly valid option at this point. :)

sweetness does anyone know what im talking about, with the roy triple counter video?
There are two versions of that in there, 375hit.wmv and the436vid.wmv both involve fun with counters. edit: They're only with two Roys, though, not three, and Mr. Game and Watch and his bucket of fun instead of Captain Falcon. More damage is dealt in both though.

does anyone have a link to a website with amazing smash brothers videos? my friend has some videos of the homerun contest and crule melee. But he also told me about this video with 3 roys a captain falcon. captain falcon does a move, roy counters, roy 2 counters the counter, roy 3 counters the countered counter, and it somehow hits captain falcon and does 350% damage in one hit. anyone have a link to this video and any other cool ones?
Those are, as far as I know, NISMOJOE's videos. He has a site but it's really really slow. edit: I found an old directory with a bunch of his videos in it. So I uploaded them. :) (CORTssbmRANDOMNESS is a fantastic video. Watch it.)

Yeah, packattack is some sort of crazed deity. I got most of those videos a while ago (it looks like new ones were added since, I'll have to get those now...) and every now and then I'll just queue them all up in Media Player Classic and watch for hours. Incredible stuff; my favorite speedruns to watch, hands down. You really gain a new appreciation for those videos trying to recreate them yourself. For example, the "double spiral" stage in SMB2, where the runner just runs through it willy-nilly, bouncing from one spiral to the next and slamming straight through the goal. I tried to recreate that out of boredom one day... it took me about half an hour just to find a good way to get enough speed to keep going once you land in one spiral, another hour of experimenting trying to find a way to bounce to the next, and then another 45 minutes or so of trying over and over, making it 1/2 or 3/4ths of the way most of the time, only to fruitlessly bounce off the top of the goal at the end. I never got it to work, and I thought that would be easy since it didn't involve falling from high distances or bouncing yourself off of corners or running along narrow ledges. I can't imagine how much work goes into each 10 second video.

Few tips: 2-2: Wouldn't it be faster to stand on the bug then backflip up at the start at the lvl?
You can stand on those types of bugs? I was under the impression the spiky ones killed you instantly... or do you mean to do this in 2-1, not 2-2?
2-3: This can be done 5 timeunits faster by using the ladder to your left, put that under the door that is closing. That will stop the door from closing and you can skip alot of the lvl.
Haha, neat, I didn't know you could do that. Nice find. edit: instead of taking up more space replying... \/\/\/ I don't see any ladybugs in 2-2, only the spiky one... oh well, whatever :)

I've wasted countless hours of my life with the not-very-creatively-titled N, a really neat little platformer made in Flash. The latest version is 1.4 beta, and you can get it here. Once you get used to the controls and how the game works, there's hundreds of levels to play through-- and 80% of them are diabolically hard. Hooray!

Heh, I used to watch DBZ on Cartoon Network back in 4th/5th/6th grade. More out of boredom than a real desire to see what happens next. If I were to go back and watch it today I doubt I'd be able to stomach more than 10 minutes.

Oh god, I haven't seen this in years. This goes above "okay parody" and into "better than the entirety of the series it parodies" territory. Time to read it again. :)
