Unless he played through the level with one character constantly taking damage, it would probably take more time attempting to kill off a character than to go through the ship moving.
The point is moot, though, because if a character dies you are sent back to the control room. You would then choose another character and start the level all over again.

I'm not sure how it relates to graphic violence, but the game does seem like a good response to gamers who are convinced that more realism is always more fun.
