Ah, I thought it had something do do with the screen scrolling. As for the star, I think the best place to use it would be 7-7 because you could skip the first star it gives you and take off. Will your star last long enough to reach the second star?

Ah, so that's how it works. It turns out that you might be able to avoid the hammer bros in World 1 JXQ. You see, my younger brother was playing SMB3 on our NES console yesterday and he did something weird. On World 2 near the desert level where the sun chases you (like right before it), he glitched the hammer bros so he was standing on it (the hammer bro) but didn't enter the hammer bros stage. He somehow opened his inventory at the exact moment he stepped on the hammer bros so that his inventory was open but he didn't go into the stage. I think that's how he did it anyway. All I know is I looked back when he said "whoa!" and he was standing on the hammer bros. He said he moved Mario as the screen was going to the right so it would show the right side of the map, so I'm not sure if it will work on World 1 because the screen doesn't move. He was also using a game genie but I don't think that would make a difference because he was only using 1 code, re-use items. I wish I had a screenshot to show you but as I said, he was playing on the console and not an emulator. I'm going to test this when I get a chance because it would be a big time saver.

Time for another update! I finished World 4, 1 more to go! Get the WIP from the same link. The savestate has been updated too, so get it from the previous link. I should have World 5 done tomorrow.

Update time! World 3 is done, get it from the same link. Here's a new savestate: http://impact.megarpg.net/cabal.fc2 The White Soldiers rear their ugly heads again in level 3-3 and 3-4 but this time I was able to defeat them. One guy I followed and shot until he died. It looks like I'm missing but I'm not, he just isn't effected by it. The others I shoot once and they run off screen. I do manage to kill another though. The 3-3 boss is probably the easiest boss in the game, especially since grenades work on it.

I watched it too, very nice job. Do you think you could do another version where you get all the Chaos Emeralds?

Wow, talk about super raptor. Great job, I really enjoyed it. I've never been able to beat this game with either character so seeing someone kick the crap out of it is awesome. Voting YES.

Holy TAS Batman! This Sonic run is amazing!! Very well done, I've never seen the first three stages done that fast. This is truly a work of art, and done in such short time too. Definate YES.

I thought it looked really interesting, aspects from all the mario games jammed into one. Might be fun to play.

Interesting movie. Having never played the game before I expected it to be somewhat different. Nonetheless, good movie. Voting YES. Great job Guybrush!

World 2 is done, get the WIP from the same link as above. Here's a savestate: http://impact.megarpg.net/cabal.fc0 I still ignored the White Soldiers on 1-3.

Many frames are wasted waiting for Green Soldiers to spawn. Watch and see.
Further investigating proved they do not effect enemy spawn rate, so I ignored them. As for the World 2 boss, grenades don't work on it. I was forced to kill it solely with my machine gun despite having 19 grenades or so.

I'll probably get NES Cabal done before the year is out. That is, if I work on it each day and don't get hooked on something else like Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance or Fable.

Post subject: Luck Manipulation

While taking a break from Cabal I decided to experiment with luck manipulation in The 7th Saga for SNES. I read the luck manipulation section in the FAQ but it didn't help me, none of the suggestions worked. I'm trying to figure out how to manipulate the battles for critical hits and misses. So far, the only way I've found this to be possible is by defending/attacking at different times. It seems that when the enemy is scripted to do something he will do it regardless of the frame you press the button on. I tested this several times. I fought a hermit and it would dodge my first hit no matter what I did. The only thing that changed this was defending. By defending he hit me then I was was able to launch a counter-attack. I can't figure out how to change the critical ratio or enemy hit ratio, just whether they attack or cast a spell. Can someone help me out here? I'd really like to do a run of this game but without serious luck manipulation it would take way too long, like 20+ hours.

I finished 1-3 today, you can get it here: http://impact.megarpg.net/cabaltest.fcm I chose to ignore the White Soldier this time. I forget, can you shoot fireballs or throw hammers while in the shoe? If you could, you might be able to beat Bowser that way.

SUCCESS! I finally got it to work! I think I was choosing the wrong color setting. The instructions call for 16-bit (High Color/32k), so I chose the second 16 bit option. I'm pretty sure that was the problem because once I chose the first one, it worked. The thing is, the files are unusually large. I converted my Jurassic Park run to avi, it's 1:03:29 when converted became 652 MB. I used the Xvid codec to dump the raw avi because when I used Huffyuv Virtuadub crashed. I compressed it with the Xvid codec as well, just like the instructions said to. Everything went smoothly, the avi works great. Any ideas why it would be so big?

I concur. How fast could Bowser's Castle be beaten with the shoe? And would Mario be in the shoe in the ending "cinematic"? That would be funny.

The grenade problem has been fixed. As nitsuja said, after pressing A to fire, I simply had to press and hold B and A for 12 frames, then release. Not sure why, but it kept him from throwing a grenade. I've done some experimenting with the White Soldier, and they seem to be invincible until they stop to shoot at you. The thing is, they in the same frame they stop, so they are going to get a shot off no matter what I do. Not to mention it takes about 6-10 frames for them to stop walking and shoot, and sometimes they walk back and forth before stopping, which takes more frames. I would go with shooting them in-between killing other guys, but since I'm also destroying the scenery to make the levels end faster, it becomes difficult to find time to hit them and then get the cursor back to the next enemy spawn location before he spawns.

I'm redoing the run, going through frame by frame to make sure everything is perfect. However I did leave the very first stage alone because I liked the way it ends. Everything else is being redone. You can get the new WIP from the same link as the previous one. I stopped about halfway through 1-3 because I'm unsure of what to do about the problem I describe below. Starting on the third stage of world one (1-3), the White Soldier is introduced. This soldier is a pain in the ass. He runs back and forth across the screen shooting at you and when you shot at him he rolls out of the way. The only way to kill him is to follow him with the cursor continuously shooting him until he dies. The time it takes to kill him allows multiple units to appear on screen and makes the run look sloppy. Should I just ignore the white soldier and go on with the level, or try to kill him?
