I got that same desync when using the wrong rom. When I used the one with matching hash it got past that just fine.

Thanks bisqwit! I was able to compile 0.98.15 but not 0.98.16.luke. First error was a missing Makefile.in. I got past it by copying from the .15, but the compilation failed. I don't need to do anything special to compile that one, do I?

I was trying to download the source from the emulators page and get permission errors of some sort. Do some of these links need to be updated?

I was wondering when Scumtron would get around to finishing his run but it looks like he hasn't been around for a while. Your run is great, it looks like you've found quite a few places to improve. I was kinda let down by the lack of showboating in a few places, especially the force-scroll section. One question, on the final boss, first form, why don't you take a hit and jump through him to the wall behind him? Then you could use the wall trick and kill him faster.

I couldn't post for a while due to some sort of browser problem. It seems to affect both Firefox and IE. However, when I boot up in Linux there is no problem. Basically, I would try to log in and the login page would just reload. If I checked "log me in automatically" it would let me log in, but on trying to post I would get an "Invalid Session" error. This all seemed to start when I ok'd an update to some sort of Java virtual machine which is probably used by both Firefox and IE. Perhaps this update has some sort of interaction with the customized phpBB code and the new Java version. Anyway, it might be a good idea to figure out whose bug it is.

Ok, I've looked into this a little further and determined that the difference comes in the transition between worlds. In fact, xenos is actually a few frames slower than the published run as far as the level-playing. Perhaps some lag or movement tweaks, I didn't figure out exactly where in the levels it happened. Anyway, at the end of the first world he is 5 frames behind. But at the start of world 2 he is miraculously 8 frames ahead. He loses some of these but still finishes world 2 three frames ahead of me. It also appears that he doesn't need to wait as long to get a good bonus result at the end of world 2. Now due to the same transition effect, he jumps ahead further. So overall, he gained 13 frames from the first world transition and 11 from the second, plus 4 from better luck. However, he loses 14 frames in the levels and the overall result is 14 ahead. So to really capitalize on this we need someone to check the disassembly to figure out what is happening at those level transitions and maybe the bonus manipution too. Perhaps smaller score = faster transitions?

I can't say I blame you, I don't really know that Jedi mode is any more interesting. It's just a general site policy to play on the hardest mode available. But if it just means more hits on the bosses and fewer chances to take hits then maybe it isn't worth it. Honestly I think the other two games in this series will be more interesting for TAS due to the Force and expanded character moves. But this first one is simple for a good start.

Sorry, I'm not interested enough to do a DW3 run. But I will watch and offer support if anyone does. But I want to add another game to this thread: The Lone Ranger. It's long and will have some slow parts but should be interesting enough overall.

It does indeed desync for me. I don't know enough about snes9x to say what the problem is, I would have thought the options you used were good enough. Anyway, your play looks good enough but you should switch to Jedi mode.

I vote yes, but mostly because I love this game and have many fond memories of it. The height of my skill was being able to barely scrape through this hardest path, so I am quite in awe at the boss ownage and 100% ratings, not to mention the acrobatics. Great job! Any plans on making a shorter warping run?

Hey, for some reason I thought some people here would be able to answer this. I am looking for access to something on the net where I can set up some web stuff just to try some things out and catch my skills up. I can boot in linux and that has been good to experiment with, but I don't think I can handle running it exclusively. It might be neat to run a second machine as a linux box but I live in a pretty small apartment and I don't want another machine here. I could probably figure out how to set up a server but configuring and maintaining it would be annoying. So I really just want to log in remotely somewhere that has a live working web server and mess around with junk like php, ajax and other good stuff. This is why I need more than just the casual html-page uploading that comes with most ISP service. I'd be willing to pay some if I had to. Can anyone suggest a place where I can do this? I use Comcast for access, but all they include for hosting is html and some file storage.

This was actually pretty cool. There was a lot of thought put in as to using the glitches to get around all the limitations. I would vote for this as a concept demo but not as a second movie for this game.

I'm going to attempt a speedrun of Final Fantasy I: Dawn of Souls, for GBA. I've read the FAQ thoroughly, downloaded the re-recording emulator for GBA,etc. Is there any other additional information I should know before starting my attempt?
Hey there, good choice with Dawn of Souls. I played through and enjoyed it thoroughly. I remember that there are multiple modes. But I think only one is available from the start which is quite a bit easier that the original NES version. It seems to me that almost every battle algorithm is different. Even the expert/classic mode might have some differences, probably including a fix to Bane immunity. Anyway, you've got the main thing with reading FAQs on the game. Also consider reading the GameFaqs forums. Many of the algoritms for the NES version have been discussed in detail. But no one has tried to TAS it yet so you will probably end up doing a lot of research yourself. Good luck!

The shop glitch in Crystalis makes the beginning of the game a little easier. I also notice that my play has been impacted by TAS experience even though I haven't done any TASing for months now.

I enjoyed this, it's short and sweet. Excellent strategy and use of glitches, voting yes.

I've been thinking about this. How about a no-sram run which uses all the glitches to beat each mode one after the other? It would be fairly quick if the warp glitch was used where possible. Of course the warrior mode would take some time, but it would be interesting. I guess after normal mode the shooter and thief would look pretty lame but this would give a good chance to show off some more possibilities for this game.

I think it was on page 5. Here's the link: http://home.comcast.net/~f_amoroso/Crystalis-TheAxeManv0.6.fcm Anyway, you are much faster than the published version, so feel free to obsolete it if you want. It's doubtful I'll ever finish this.

First, a point to disagree on:

without the possibility of insane luck manipulation
There is actually a lot of luck manipulation going on here to respawn the enemies faster. Sometimes even to make the enemies move a certain way. But you probably won't notice if you aren't familiar with the game. I think you are right about the popularity factor, in an alternate universe where SNK went on to produce Crystalis 2, A Link to Crystalis and Crystalis 64, this game might get a whole lot more love. I don't think anyone will deny that the overall entertainment value isn't that high. However, if you take away the leveling, this is an absolutely fantastic game for TAS. The character movements can be highly optimized. There's possibilities to reduce lag. But most importantly, the route planning is very deep, leading to many non-obvious optimizations. I think everyone who has been willing to look past the leveling enjoys this. It's just that because this is a 50-minute video and ~50% of it is leveling there aren't many people willing to do that. Now if you enjoy thinking about the route, you will also like to see both versions since the wild warp changes a lot. If not for the ghetto flight bug, this would be even more different (and 5+ mins longer). Besides the route, the rabbit boots also keep things interesting. So in conclusion I guess I'm just disappointed that this game gets no love. But at the same time I guess I can't be too surprised either.

Ah, finally saw this. Have you seen my WIP which hasn't been updated for like a year? I made it up to the end of the swamp and saved a huge amount of time over the published run. At the end of the swamp (a very good comparison point) it's about 2200 frames ahead of the run you just posted. I'm pretty sure you lose some time by making two trips to Brynmaer. Also, your leveling with the blue blobs and pig men is fast once you start, but it forces you to do a lot of extra walking and doesn't allow you to kill the swamp enemies as you walk through. Anyway, I don't blame you for getting bored, that's about why I gave up. The overall route planning for a TAS at this game is very deep and quite an interesting problem. It's just that the leveling is a killer. Even if the route and glitches used are ingenious, this doesn't come out in the movie for the same reason. Instead, the story is simply that this is a boring run with lots of leveling. It's really discouraging when your game gets no love.

random encounters become the biggest problem (for GBA, as best i can tell). is there a way to avoid them entirely or should just aiming for a quick getaway be better?
Read the rest of this thread, I have discovered ways to avoid encounters.

Ok, I am voting yes. This looks very good, it now looks like you have put a lot of work into it. I'm glad to finally see a good run for this game.

Quite excellent, and definitely has the marks of an experienced TASer all over.

Dude, if you read the forum rules you'd see there are no rom links allowed. But back on topic, I can't really say how long this run should be. To do this better I'd really need to analyze the game a lot more and use some more advanced techniques like memory poking or maybe a bot. If you really want to find out more, why don't you try TASing this yourself?
