Isn't that, just another way of saying "I took the time to verify it". It really bothers how often I download a rom from an established site and it turns out to be a bad dump. It infuriated me to the point where I actually made my own and tried to submit them, but no reply. After you've made your own dump, is there any way to verify it beyond playing it for a couple of mins on a emulator or console?
The way you suggest isn't the way to verify it anyway. You verify it against other equipment / ROMs / targets to ensure you have a bit-for-bit copy of the original.

Not even. Default values at power-up are not guaranteed but will likely favor a "blank" value (usually 0x00 in SRAMs) - so this is likely unattainable in practice. Also this is probably a debug code that could be poked by the debugger that was left in.
Not quite: http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/summary?doi=10.1.1.164.6432 Note that SRAM is random, but not entirely random -- some bits favor zero some favor one, some are neutral and therefore random. Given a specific chip, a given initial power on state might not be realizable, even if it is on another, because of the skewed bits.
Well, we were talking SRAM. I mentioned "likely favor" and not "always favor." But I was wrong above for another reason and edited my post; the SNES uses PSRAM. so it is a different beast. Still, yes, for particular SRAMs specific bits may be favored to be 1 but SRAMs used in NES (and in fact many SRAM) have a very high percentage of bits being statistically always 0 at power-on. The probability of any specific bit being high quite low even console-to-console. What I mentioned regarding SRAM and what you mention regarding SRAM are not mutually exclusive.

At a glance looks like composite capture, but this is the internet... Cart dirty / bad contacts?

The previous version of this video did not verify. I can try this version though, give me a couple weeks to unpack and decompress from this convention.

Was thinking of that too, but involves controller connectors and such...but I could modify some shitty third party NES or SNES extension cable to do this. I was thinking along the lines of something integrated but both ideas were on the table. I dropped it for the time being but may revisit it. My MultiReplay hardware is capable of being an in-the-middle device but needs programmed and will require cutting up an extension cable to do this.

I was working on a board that would fit into NES or SNES controllers to do input recording, mostly for this purpose. Never got it done. May revisit doing it at some point.

Pirohiko link in OP text is broken. Edit: “I say in FCEUX because this emulator only lets you input once per frame, even when it is polled multiple times. This also had the effect that sometimes some buttons were lost (because of unfortunate timing) and I had to wait a frame.” So does this mean it would be faster on a better emulator? 7/8.8
We need a better emulator for NES anyway, period.

Does this run even sync? When I tested MM1 runs they didn't sync. Though IIRC you weren't interested in verifying this time around, so I imagine you might use the opportunity to show off critical sections at slow speed / frame advance and / or pause while explaining?

There's (roughly?) timing-accurate emulation of various things going on: - SNES CPU - SNES APU - SNES PPU - Bus clock delays With another chip, it emulates that too. The ROM is just code that runs in that chip, as Warepire said. If the chip had no ROM / execution unit for a ROM, then it would still need to be emulated. Because there is no ROM in this case you just don't see it. A good example of this is NES mappers. It has little to do with SNES vs Genesis and more to do with time and interest spent developing accurate emulators

Not a particularly good excuse - even my old E350 was able to run it, though at half speed at most. Used it for all old SNES verifies. Still, good use of savestates can get you by... (I would also like to see if this game is verifiable...)

Likely he had a rejection here, or knows he can't compete, as the slow run shows and he inadvertently admits in boisterous fashion. In the video he comes off as a hard-headed supreme know-it-all loudmouth whose preferences are fact. Haven't seen him anywhere else or talked with him, maybe I'm wrong. Still, neat PoC. Likely wouldn't go anywhere here but I'd be willing to watch an optimized (edit: DS, see next post) run. I still need a copy or a donor cart to try verifying any CT runs...

Alyosha, re: your overhaul, keep in mind there are more human inputs than controller inputs. There may also be some sort of non-standard input that could make for an interesting showcase piece. The exclusionist nature of TASVideos over the years has had a backbone in rigid rule following (and much related drama) so while the intents should be clear, the specifics perhaps should not be as much.

In brief, the proposal calls for creating a new and unique tier that would be used for technically interesting runs that do not fit in the existing categories.
I'm not really seeing the point of this. It seems to me that any technically interesting run already qualifies to be in Moon tier; if it didn't get into Moons, then most people wouldn't find it technically interesting for the same reason.
This in fact is NOT the case, which is why this is being discussed.

My thought there was that since these demonstrations are meant to showcase technical prowess, they should meet the highest standards of verifiability (use real hardware.)
also to feos: Perhaps this is a qualifying component. But certainly some demonstrations could be possible that just can't be verified right now. Would this branch/tier idea be discussed if it wasn't for verifications, though?

I finally tested the latest 100% TAS with a live stream against my PRG1 cart. It gets farther than PRG1 does in emulator by getting to 3-9. It desyncs shortly after leaving the pipe that takes you to the bottom section. Not sure if PRG0 will sync here or if there is an extra / missing poll here and adding / removing a frame will get it to sync.

Hey, it's absolutely fair to be annoyed when people take your work without crediting you. So why all the victim-blaming here? C'mon guys.
Because someone is using his work, which likely used copyright infringing material to create, as part of a greater work. And he'll go apeshit if someone copies something he copied as part of a new derivative work. I blame hypocrisy apeshit.

In a sense, a tier of the ultimate superplays...the other side of the TAS spectrum from the Vault. I can't provide any input now but will (probably) update this post later with thoughts. The tone of the RFC is good. Details are bad but what is a post about tiers without complaints about details.

This doesn't have anything to do with TAS. Are you wanting specific info for general speedruns? What is the point to this?

While I understand your point, I don't think looking into their history is the way to go about learning about it.

I wouldn't call it pain, just people putting themselves first before the topic again. The TAS community is filled with people lacking social life, whether desired, unhealthy or somewhere inbetween. Now that there's a thread to talk about it it's all mild narcissistic hugbox time...

Maybe. Is it wrong to be sad about having lost a great person? I don’t think so.
Not at all what I was saying, nor the point I was trying to make.

If I was "put" in a "safe environment" I would kill myself. It's all situational context and no fucking guidebook, anecdote or whims of the empowered will change that. Yet those are what are used all the damn time in these situations. Has this shit even been confirmed other than a skype status?

In hardware it is a completely separate input. Recognition is a software problem, not a hardware or emulator problem.

I used a Rad Racer cart as a donor for Rockman 2. I need to find the cart and the original ROM, or burn a ROM and I can test this. But I am very busy for the next week so I will get to this before next month if nobody else does first.
