When reading Tub's post, I first thought he meant for each game to have a seperate page, like SDA, which I thought was a bad idea.
not mainly, just in addition to provide links to all the movies not worthy of the main index - hacks, concept demos, exotic gameplay limitations, and of course obsoleted demos. I didn't even think about sda at that time. SDA uses manually edited pages for the games. I was thinking about a new database-driven script, basically just a different filter for the movies page. I'll edit my post to clarify.

how does any user look for movies? - newcomers will probably look at the starred movies. IMHO no hack or concept demo should be in that category, so everything's fine. - regulars will watch NewMovies most of the time. category doesn't matter there, everything's fine. - everyone looking for a specific game or just browsing will use the Movies-<system> pages, including the Movies-Hacks. so IMHO, the organisation of the latter is the trouble here, and has been for a while for different reasons - for example, when obsoleting runs from different categorys or rejecting good runs because there shouldn't be more than x movies of this game published. my suggestion is to change those pages into a more game-centric way: right now, they're already sorted by game names, but there could be a stronger grouping, including an additional Movies-<game> page which includes all the movies for that game (basically a different filter). To avoid flooding the Movies-<system>-pages, those pages are only to display the main categorys for the game (as in: the most interesting movies), containing links to the game-specific filter with all the other movies - be it concept demos, hacks, gameplay with exotic limitations, or just obsoleted movies. well, it's probably best described with an image, in this sample with one of the most category- and hack-intensive games: super metroid. http://www.authmann.de/misc/Movies_snes.png (please don't mind design/layout issues, broken character encoding or spelling errors) This way, the concept demos / hacks category can be removed, as everything has it's place. Games with lots of characters / game modes can have lots of movies without cluttering the movie index. There's also no need to put artificial limitations to run categories any more (like limiting SMB to the any% and 100% runs). Anything producing an interesting movie that's different enough from previous categories goes and can be published without littering the index. As a consequence, no movie should be allowed to obsolete a movie of a different category any more, although the categories displayed on the index can be allowed to change. oh, my definition of concept demo is "anything that does not complete the game". (there's more to say about SRAM movies, but let's not spawn that discussion here)

I'd certainly watch a 100% run, even if it took 5 hours.

There's at least the dagger. JXQ frees it from a candle, but doesn't pick it up. No idea if the dagger makes up for the time needed to pick it up, I didn't watch your movie yet.

I tried what you're mentioning. It's not possible if you're getting to the top of the lava at the wrong time, because you might not have a spare bomb to lay (see my smv a couple of posts ago). Also, the shooting thingy kept interfering and prevented me from timing my resurfacing properly. If you had more luck with the timing than kwinse and I had, and it's indeed possible, horray!

I wish they used standardized timing for all videos
they do. if there's an ingame-timer that's not broken, it's used. if there's none, real-time is measured with standardized end-points. On games where loading times may differ (pc-games, multi-platform games), either loading-times are removed, or times are tracked seperately. that's different from the usual TAS-timing, but actually more standardized, since there's still no agreement on the proper point for ending your TAS ;)

Dragorn's 120 star Mario64-run didn't look any less TASed than this. He's just been around longer, so nobody's accusing him.

I remember it from a long time ago, was a good choice for killing time until it ran out of new pages to read. No idea why it went missing for a while.

say, some of your test-runs turned out this way: 50m30s real-time got a 0:36 ingame 50m20s real-time got a 0:35 ingame since the amount of real-time that's not counted towards game-time (intro, screen-transitions, menu visits) doesn't change much if you stick to your route, you'll now know that you need to finish in about 46 minutes, 20 seconds real time to reach 0:31 ingame. If you're at the point where you have to decide if you're going to rescue the animals and see 46m40s on your clock, you might as well go for the critters and save them from JXQ's horrible fantasies.

a standard clock would help. There isn't too much fluctuation in the difference between real time and ingame-time if you stick to the same route.

well, this is as far as I got: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/2463/SuperMetroidRedesign_croc_then_sb.smv dang. I'm not entirely convinced it's impossible, but I give up for now. edit: Drewseph just informed me, that that stupid wall isn't walljumpable anyway. I'll try Plan B later..

no, I checked, killing crocomire will really lower the lava (and add a couple of enemys along the way). however, atma managed to bomb jump out of lava in his first run, right before crocomire. Are you sure it's impossible?

>> I've tried getting speed booster early with crocomire's power bombs, but the lava's too low to ibj out of in the room where one would normally need grapple. Atma and Drewseph were getting the speed booster with 1 power bomb, before killing crocomire. Killing crocomire and getting the speed booster with 2 power bombs shouldn't be more difficult. >> Killing the 4 main bosses is my best guess, since I killed Ridley in a game that skipped Kraid and still that tube wouldn't break until I saw what a pathetic joke the giant is against the beam combo... atma didn't kill Kraid, so that isn't it. Last guess: getting another or both of the Maridia Guardians ? Drewseph, enlighten us! ;)

I've only watched the run once (yet), but here's some questions:
  • getting the red brinstar underwater 10-pack-missiles: isn't it possible to mockball in there?
  • I've been sceptical about getting the "early" power bomb when I watched atma's run, as you'll have to kill crocomire anyway, but in your run it looks just like wasted time. You'll save a bit of trouble entering crocomire's lair, but waste plenty of time on the bomb maze. Is there any reason for grabbing it except to look cool?
  • You pick up a 2-pack of missiles in maridia. You don't run below 2 missiles before mother brain. Is that (small) detour only taken for the boss fight?
  • killing dragoon looked sloppy to me.. repeatedly falling into the sand pits. That didn't waste time, just looked sloppy.
  • you're getting a 5th energy tank in maridia, being quite some detour. Is it really needed or faster?
  • you're deactivating the speed booster whenever entering lava. ok, so you're going for ingame-time, not real-time. But why is booser-less samus faster in lava?
  • I always wondered: what's the trigger for the western maridia guardian ? You'll have to be in that nearby room for an earthquake to occur and break the tube, but when will that earthquake be triggered? Anything to do with visiting lower norfair first?
  • Is it worth getting the plasma beam just for 26 hits on mother brain? I don't know the damage values and can't estimate the fighting delay. Would collecting some power bombs help on mother brain, or won't the charged PB-shots damage her?
  • since you're already next to mother brain before leaving again for the missile refill: if you break the glass or hurt her, will it be reset when you exit the room?

Well, I wish I'd live in a basement, but that's just a clichee thing. Not THAT basement of course.

please what? nothing in this game looks "neat". From the ugly blue outline and the trails behind your guy (and bats) over the new enemys they included to the second worst area of the game called Room of Illusion... The backgrounds are so crammed with colors that it's sometimes difficult to distinguish them from the touch- or killable things. Even the toned-down castle B rarely has a colour that wasn't used in a Lego article. The designers were either colour-blind, on LSD, or both. Given the so-called "music" which is even surpassed by some NES-games, they might have been deaf as well. At least they're now. about the furniture Room .. if you intend to live there, don't open your eyes. If the colours don't kill you, the composition will. If it still doesn't, the incredible amount of tasteless object should. The bottle with the face.. the bunny.. the moose-head on the wall.. the cat (that's offscreen, thankfully).. who would want to spend time there? it's ugly, just like the rest of dracula's freakin castle. </rant> That being said, the physics engine is exploitable enough, and I look forward to the run.

If it works with IE, it seems to be an issue with your Firefox. Do you by any chance have any other weird extensions installed that might have screwed this up? /me looks squarely at fasterfox Well, you could try disabling your extensions one by one. If that doesn't help, try it with a new, clean profile. If it still doesn't help, I'm out of ideas. On the other hand, Firefox 2.0 has been out for a day, if you want to upgrade it'd be a good idea to do so before tempering with your extensions or profiles.

the torrents are hosted on the same machine as the emulator movie files, the frontpage, the forum (minus a few static images). If everything else on this site works fine for you, I don't see why the torrents would be a problem. when you just click the torrent link instead of using "save target as", what error message does your browser give you? (and btw, which browser do you use?)

just stumbled upon this (german) article: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/79712 as difficult as german might be for humans to learn, it seems to be easy to understand for computers - just because there are so many suffixes. Maybe latin would be even easier..

It doesn't have to. It's moving relative to you, fully qualifying itself for the doppler effect.
