even if a route is found now, it's not going to last until the emulator is out.

JXQs run was not a "concept demo", it was a speedrun for a hack. Thus it ended up in the "Concept demos/Other"-category along with the concept demos. It doesn't say that concept demos should be obsoleted. The previous run was entertaining because it was a fresh and funny idea. It was fast because slowness is boring, but speedwise perfection was neither the primary goal nor source of the entertainment value. This run doesn't add to the idea (which is now old, probably boring) and provides just minor improvements in speed - which nobody cares about, since there's no speedrun community for SMB speedwalks. I don't think this old joke should be revived at the top of NewMovies. I don't think the old run should be silently replaced either, as the new one doesn't really add to the entertainment value (and Bisqwit deserves his name next to this sillyness.. so everyone knows who to blame :p). While it might be interesting for some to know that it can be done faster, or to see where you squeezed some frames, none of that requires encoding. Frame comparisons are best done inside the emulator. No vote. edit: yeah, biqwit managed to summarise my post in one short concise sentence.

With two monitors, I need something that has depth, or I'm feeling like I'm staring at a wall.. so, currently this one. That guy skybase has more similar wallpapers, I choose the one I choose for it's colour. if you like landscapes, you might like them :)

yeah, movies by Kubrick are generally boring. Entertainment doesn't seem to be his primary goal. The movie is from 1968, and 2001 has been 5 years ago. In that context it's still a great movie. I understand it's hard to appreciate the movie in 2006. Some of his visions were corrupted by a different reality, others are taken for granted nowadays. reminds me, I need to watch that movie again.. btw, interesting coincidence: replace each letter in HAL by it's next in the alphabet.

happy belated birthday Guano :) looking forward to the improvements. You're the runner, speed vs. entertainment tradeoffs are your choice, and I'm glad you just made them instead of joining the heated debate. Let me add one thing though: showing off cool things or glitches in a run is always a plus. If you can find a place where showing a forward backwalk (clearly a glitch) does not waste time, please try to include it just for varietys sake. Maybe even a diagonal backwalk, from what I understand of it's workings that should be possible. Maybe the escape with the princess at the end is a good scene, you'll have to wait for her anyway, those 20 frames for setup should be there. IMHO fooling with the camera angels could spice that scene up.

looks good, Saturn :) on a non-TAS-question: I was trying to go for 100% on version 1.1 but got 98.6. 14 energy-tanks, 4 reserve tanks, 5 beams + combo, both suits, morph ball, bomb, screw attack, jump boots, space jump, speed booster, 280 missiles, 30 super missiles, 30 power bombs. What did I miss?

she understands what a TAS is, but is not a fan of speedruns in general. Being grown up in a musical family without TV or computers she especially dislikes NES-games because she can't stand the sound :)

Zidane Tribal from FF9, closely followed by vivi, followed by the others except quinna. Still my favourite FF-game - it has characters whose primary trait is not the sword on their back.

I tried beer once, and hated the taste. That kept me from drinking until now, which I consider good. I tried some hard stuff as well, some of it tastes a lot better. But as I'm not used to alcohol I'm careful with that stuff and stick to cola. Got me quite a reputation on any party. And gives me a chance to filter out idiots ("come on, why don't you drink alcohol?" - "ahh, an idiot. thanks for playing.") oh well.. seems like I'm below my quota http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_consumption_by_country

the tools we have can be used for entertainment, or for perfection. often both at the same time. the stated goal of this site is to produce entertainment though, and I think it's good that way. Why should a boring, perfect movie be published? There won't be many people watching it, those who do might be disappointed (you know how well warning labels work), and those who would watch a run just for the perfection probably want to watch it on the emulator anyway.
and not thrown away along with all the other "I spent a whole hour making this speed run."
you're telling me you want waste separation.. because one kind of waste doesn't want to be associated with the other? :p

areas before DMT are irrelevant, as time is set to a certain value after exiting DC.

I promised you an opinion a couple of pages back, now I have one, and I'm prepared to share it. run while you still can. my work computer has 2 screens @ 1600x1200 each. With seamonkey streched over both, each column has it's own screen and it obviously looks ok, but I don't do that. ;) at 1600x1200, it's all neat and tidy, I really like it. Finding forums with new posts to read and opening them in new tabs works quite fast. same computer, now on windows, @ 800x600 on one screen (this windows-installation is for gaming only, if I put it higher than 800x600 the 60hz-bug will strike) It's cramped, but I can still find forums with new posts fast enough and open them in new tabs, probably faster than on the old layout. so, double-plus from me on my work-computer. watching it on 800x600 shows that the layout can be overwhelming and unclear for new-comers though. If you're not visiting to read all new posts like I did, but are looking for a specific forum (to find a specific thread or post a new one), the new layout will make you search longer. one minus. now my notebook is a different story. The screen is 1400x1050 and big enough for the layout. It's just that my trackball died, and I'm stuck with either a pain-inducing "notebook-mouse" that won't fit anything bigger than a rat's hand, or the touchpad. I go with the touchpad. those things are notoriously hard to aim with, so I usually position the pointer somewhere left, and use the arrow keys to move the link under the pointer, then ctrl-click. This doesn't work with a 2-column-layout of course. But I guess that setup is exotic enough to ignore. so, yeah, an option to change the layout would be nice. Having to maintain two different style-sheets can be avoided by using just the right amount of symlinks. :) I'd prefer the original layout for guests, as it works in every configuration and is a layout everyone is comfortable with. IMHO having a working and clear forum layout for everyone is more important than raising comfort for the select few with high resolutions and working mice. I'm aware that this would lead to some users never noticing that there's a second layout - wo looks at the "board style" option anyway? changing the registration / profile-editing template to add a noticeable question along with two thumbnails should help. somewhat like this. I'll probably add a two-column-layout to my own forums soon. Thanks for the idea.

Purists have always said about web design that all webpages should be designed so that they work ok in very small screens.
That's not just true for small screens. a 640px-fixed-width-table layout looks as ugly on 1600x1200 as it does on on a handheld. at least give me some banner ads on that freaking black space! edit: pictures added

which actually attain the best ending (Super Metroid 100%, anyone?)
the best ending in SM contains a small moving white dot before the planet explodes. You need to rescue the animals. JXQ, your cue for image spamming! if you consider the displayed stats for the "best ending", this isn't it either. It may have 100% collection (the best), but the displayed time is not perfect.

labeling issues aside, this run is great. I'm going to watch it again now. btw, I find it amusing that some people are offended by stealing stuff in videogames, but don't mind the massive genocide on cute little creatures that were only trying to protect their homes.

hmm, isn't that just a regular super slide, then a regular backflip? the backflip isn't higher than usual, it's just longer because you keep the horizontal velocity from the super slide. And it looks huge because you land further below. where's the difference to the backflips we've seen after the super slide + hover boots-attempts at shadow temple and rainbow bridge skip? is there something special needed to do it from the ground, without hover boots?

eek! that's going to need some getting used to. I won't post my opinion until I have one, in a few days.

which doesn't even work out, as it's just two columns and not a proper table (although I realize that a proper table is a little heavier on the server load).

if you can't skip the owl, what happens when you throw the bomb for the next super slide before talking to the owl? will it go off during the cutscene?

no. First of all, he wasn't talking about the RBO but about his new any% run. Second, the bomb torizo is fought first even in an RBO. You can't bypass it (on NTSC), and it's just a miniboss and not subject to the reverse order.

I actually lived for a month in the German part of Switzerland. (Schwyzerdütsch is like a bad parody of German to me, but that's minor.) One problematic thing is that it's not part of EU and hard to get citizenship.
I'm german. No matter how hard I try, I can't understand Schwyzerdütsch. My girlfriend is swiss, and her whole family thinks I'm weird because I rarely talk to them. Oh well.. anyway, Switzerland is expensive and their health-care plain sucks ("hey, we care for your life. but why should we pay for not life-extending medicine? like painkillers?"). It's a nice place though, if you can afford to live there, but you should've noticed that already ;) If you get a job there, you won't have trouble getting in. They just don't want you if they think you're going to cost them money. altogether, I'd gladly move there if it wasn't for the language..
