It's always possible to do the mana sword glitch (extra sword orb that makes your sword stay in mana form), but I'm not sure if it stays in mana form for the last boss, or if it would even be allowed as a glitch at this site. For those who don't know the glitch: After you've completed the Pure Lands and are about to tackle the Mana Fortress, use Flammie to fly to the Icelands, and by the left side of the land theres a bunch of tiny island that look impossible to land on. However, it IS possible to land on one, and there you'll find Neko. Save at him, and than do a soft reset. Load the game with the save you just made and you'll be back at Potos village. It's exactly like the beginning of the game again, and once you kill the Mantis ant for a second time, he'll drop a ninth sword orb, which you can then upgrade to the Mana sword (Most powerful item in the game. I'm pretty sure the ATK power is over 200). Once you've got the orb, use Flammie to get out of Potos and continue on the game as normal.

I've just discovered this site a few days ago, and I think i've watched about 2/3 of the videos already...these videos are all impossibly cool =) However this particular video impressed me more than anything. An ordinarily boring game to watch. The creativity in getting hit by enemies to save time to reach platforms is just amazing. This video is what this site is all about. Kudos for this one...and kudos to the creators of this site.

Well, it might have been fixed in YOUR version.
that's highly unlikely, but if it's true I would let somone take a dump :D I think the most likely solution is that it is not being emulated properly. The controlls DO respond differently in this level than any other. In all the other levels you have 8 way controll. In this level you have 4 way controll (like pac man) like I said, if you hold the controller at a teensy diagonal you go way slower. I could see this getting missed by the person debugging an emulator pretty easily. The other reason I could see it getting missed is because there is a plethora of other buggs in the 2 player version that are Rare's fault.

I played this game to death two player. I completed level 11 with 2 players before. I have gotten to level 11 with nesticle and with an actual nes, and nester. I remember the bug in one and I do not remember the bug in the other. I know that it is possible to do two player. I am pretty sure that it works on a real nes because I remember getting pissed at the nes advantage because if you hold it a little crooked then you die. I haven't played the game in years and I have never posted here before but if I get flamed or something I might have to capture a nes movie of my own, old school, no cheats, real nes, 2 players and prove it can be done. I beat the game in like 8th grade, 2 players with a game genie, and then I beat it again like 2 years ago without a game genie.

Wow. This movie was the reason I signed up for the forums. As someone said, it's simply not possible to make a speedrun this long that is still entertaining - no, wait, it is now. Great job.
I guesstimate that tool-assisted luck manipulation can take 30 minutes off the speed run at most but I suppose properly abusing the sketch glitch and other route improvements can slim that down some more.
Not to mention single stepping a frame at a time through any menu inputs. A few frames here, a few there, it all adds up. I'd guess that the savings would be quite a bit more than a half hour. If the randomness of the random encounters were also manipulated then that would likely be an even bigger saving.

I really like the co-ordination between the boy & dog, and at this point I dont really see anything to improve on.

Vatchern, Ive watched both of your submissions, and i can say that its a great improvement. Youve made level 1,2 and 6 alot faster and funner to watch. the Auto-scrolling levels is a little hard to change anyway. And i enjoyed watching your double kicks on the final boss. Ill vote yes on this movie.

The source for this is up too, and it should be compatible with MinGW (unless I forgot something).
Just a couple little things, but it was easily fixed :) I uploaded a diff file for anyone interested. The following is assumed if you want to compile with MinGW: 1. You have the most recent MinGW (3.2.0-rc-3) and MSYS (1.0.10) 2. You have nasmw.exe in your mingw/bin directory 3. You have at least directx 7 header/lib files (dx70_mgw.zip from Allegro will do the trick) *4. You have zlib 1.2.2 installed in your mingw/include and mingw/lib dirs *5. You have libpng 1.2.8 installed in your mingw/include and mingw/lib dirs 6. You have the FMOD headers in mingw/include/FMOD and libfmod.a in your mingw/lib directory *By installed I mean you grabbed the source code and compile the libs, then copied them to your mingw/lib directory. Sorry the instructions are so short and not very sweet, if you have problems send me a pm and I'll see what I can do. Grab the diff file (s9ximp6.diff) here

I myself got the up + down glitch to work also and beat the game under 5 mins. I just took a part a snes controller and it worked. So it is possible to do this glitch without the emulator. It's cool that you guys found this out so thanx.

Hey man, great vid. I remember playing this back in 1991 or so, and there was a trick I discovered. The boss at the end of level 4 would self destruct if you let him hit you while you had the armor upgrade. Maybe it doesn't work on the harder mode, but I definitely did that everytime on easy. Try it for me, see if its still good.

I realize this topic is quite old, but is there any info on when the 2nd episode of the fan-subbed ToP anime will be released?

I explained why I voted no. This site is for ENTERTAINMENT purposes, so if it doesnt look quite entertaining like you said in your first sentence, why would someone vote yes? Besides, a movie of a single match isn't worth publishing IMO. A whole game run like you already submitted should be enough, and I voted yes on that.

Voting no. Didn't find it jawdropping + I don't think a movie like this one should be published (maybe just used as a competition between people for the fastest record). One SSF2 movie is enough :)

Nevermind I got it to work (figured out it was a battery save). However, most of them give me errors when I start up the game (ie. when I start up a game it says cannot read memory, ect). Does this mean I have the wrong ROM for the .sav file?

Yep, that's how you do it on a stair that goes down when moving north. On a stair that goes up when moving north, you automatically move through the stair the first time and end up under the floor. There's more on the exploration glitches in my FAQ (see www.gamefaqs.com , Alttp then the FAQs) if you want to use some in the other run, but I don't think using glitches is really a good idea (plenty of things can be skipped even if you consider that completing the game is achieved by fighting and defeating Ganon). The STEG (version on the stairs) has not yet been included in the FAQ because it's more recent than the other variants. Good luck on the full run.

Hi, The glitch you're using in this video (called Up/Down Exploration Glitch (UDEG) on the GameFAQs boards) is not really optimal for this run. We now know a more efficient version that is done by pressing all four directions (this makes Link move up-left while looking down) and walking through a staircase in that way (a staircase inside a room, not between two levels). This glitch can be done on the same room of Hyrule Castle (left of the main entrance) and is done faster than the UDEG, and takes you directly to the same room under the floor (instead of taking you to the room south of it). I should save a few seconds (which count if you're making a run of about 3 minutes). Also this other glitch should be possible to do in the room of the underground (leading to Princess Zelda's cell) as suggested by someone but I'm not sure it would save time since the time it takes to get there might compensate...

This is an off-topic post. I would open a new one, but it'd be a waste because I only have one question: How do you get VBA to open .sav gamefiles? I've changed the save-type to SRAM by going to Options -> Emulator -> Save Type, but it still saves in .sgm format. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Really pretty. I think other characters might have better comboing methods than Ken, however. Still a yes vote from me.
