Alright jecy, well I wish you all of the best in the future gaming speed runs that you have in mind! I doubt that I will beat my own Batman non assisted run, jecy, as I was lucky to do as well as I did that time. Also, when trying to do what you did in your speed run, I find it difficult to keep Batman alive for very long, as the timing must be absolutely perfect every single time and well humans just aren't really made to be perfect all of the time. Your video is still the greatest speed run that I have ever seen though and I am sure that many other people would agree with me.

I've been looking forward to this movie for ages but it seems that loading the Earthbound ROM causes my computer to completely lock up after anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Huffers, did you disable video output during the bot search, in order to save computation time ? I'd be curious to see your time-zones for Mario Circuit 1, if you have any picture of them ... And yeah, great job to have a bot up and running in the first place !

I would really love to do this with you guys, it is really cool. But, on my GENS program, I do not have the option to record anything. I saw a screenshot earlier of a GENS program running and it had "Record AVI" and things like that. I looked in the FAQ section, but it does not explain this problem. Thanks, Atomic Nixon

Of course there isn't. That would be considered far too convenient, and would make life for people way too easy -- I mean, why bother supporting the most widely used OS anymore? Only squares use Windows, afterall! Ridiculous.

Gee, thanks. I never would have thought to do that over the course of a year. If the FAQ cleared everything up for me, I wouldn't be asking.

This is what we call a desync. You should read the FAQ or something. Otherwise you could try to tick some of the options avalible. Like WIP-timing and stuff like that. Edit: It could also desync from the fact that you need to load a savestate as well, since it's not always intended to play from start. ;)
ok thanks.

Today I was playing SMB2 on a console and maybe found a useful glitch. After hitting Wart with the 6th vegetable, I caught a 7th and threw it at his mouth. Instead of flashing longer, Wart made a sound, then immediately flew offscreen w/ his sprites garbled. If this is reproducible (seems likely), it could save about 2-3 seconds.

When I try to play the avi using Media Player Classic, the audio and video aren't in synch. Am I using the wrong player, or should I watch this on the emulator using the rom? Cheers

you need to hit start on controller 2 actually there is a "Trick" to getting a higher score. spend alot of time in smb1, go to 3-2 or 3-1 and rack up massive amounts of points using the turtle stomp trick. this was done at the real nwc tournament (it got me to the semi finals till they "modified" the rules initialy you didn't have to play all 3 games, till that technique was found (I modified it a bit and went to 5-1 directly from 1-2) but by the offical rules you had to finish rad racer AND place at least one block in tetris. still it would be a very interesting run to see (especially if the better time attackers competed to get the best possible score (with following the rules and using the same time limit)
I've been dying to see an NWC speedrun (well, it's actually a score run...the actual competition time was set via the 4 jumper switches on the cart to about 6:21...I think switch 3 had to be up and all others down...or vice versa). Anyway, the best players out there (mainly those who have owned the cart since the end of the competition) can regularly get into the 4 million range for a final score. Some folks like Thor Aackerlund and Rich Ambler, iirc got in the 5 mil range often. Here's a few pointers: I believe there's a way to crash right at the end of Rad Racer to save a few seconds. In Tetris, believe it or not, there is only about 4 distinct order patterns of blocks, unlike the actual released standalone version of Tetris. Using this knowledge you can completely plan ahead for the block pattern you lay out. DO NOT use the SMB stomp trick on SMB. Almost your entire score is made in Tetris, since the Tetris score is worth 25x, Rad Racer, 10x, and SMB 1x. See the problem? Using the SMB stomp trick, the best players can usually only get in the 900k range, tops. Use death to your advantage to get the 50 coins. Originally, people in the competition were doing quite well with the stomp trick, and I think it was Howard Phillips himself that tried this first in his own testing of the game....I believe he did mention it as some point, though he knew it was sort of a cheat, but they accepted it in the competition. There was originally no "rules" for playing the competition, though they later made a lone rule that you must actually play all three games...that was it. You basically had to make it through Rad Racer or be disqualified...though an infant could do that. Then, people like Thor Aackerlund came along, and had his dad videotape his competition tryouts he attended. He studied these tapes hard and discovered the Tetris patterns. He also attended several cities. On top of natural gaming talent, that's why he won. Smart guy. Feel free to contact me for anything on this...I've done lots of interviews with the finalists and staff of the event. Make sure any time attack is set to official competition time. I'm working on a book about the NWC and similar events (though mainly the NWC), so seeign a time attack on this would be really cool...it'd be nice to see the boundaries of what is possible on this game. Perhaps some SMB , Rad Racer and Tetris speedrun authors could collaborate? -Rob

I don't know if this was the right place to post this, but I found a SMB1 run that (I think) is faster than Pom's. The guy finishes with 317 left on the clock, and he jumps backwards most of the time. Here is a link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQzNeSM84a0

To the Dam discussion for a moment. You guys have to understand that GE has been played to an amazing extent over the past 9 years. Dam Agent is the very first stage, and as such it's played even more than many of the other stages. Trying new things has been done to death. To give you and idea of how much time people at t-e.n are willing to put into a stage: Dam 53 is the current WR on Dam Agent. It is tied by 6 people. Of those 6 people, that I know of, one spent over 100 hours to take his time from 54 to 53. One spend about 24 hours to do it. Two others spent 20+ hours to do it. The other two, I don't know how long it took. So if t-e.n members seem a little defensive about people claiming lower, I think you can see why. The top players know these stages like you wouldn't believe.
There's no reason to act rude to a person who claims a better time. The least you could do is TRY NEW THINGS and see if getting a better time is possible.
Of course "new" things have been tried on Dam. Timing cinemas to manuiplate guards? Yes, doesn't get you a faster gate. Shooting in various places? Yes, doesn't get you a faster gate. Using lookdown all the way through the initial portion of the stage actually results in a slower gate opening. What do you suggest that we try? AKA popped in here, claimed a time 3 seconds lower than an absurdly difficult world record to achieve. When someone rightly called him on it and asked how it was done, he says a guard opened the gate.
the guard on the other side can be manipulated to open the gate from the other and more importantly from far away
Okay. That's been tried before. Nobody else has gotten it to work. So how did AKA get it to work? He hasn't answered. Instead he offered a story of how he couldn't believe 50 was possible in back in 2000 and then found out about damage boosts(which has been known since the game came out), lookdown(lookdown wasn't discovered until well after 2000 by the way), and finally the mysterious guard(who convienently only opens the gate on very rare occasions for unknown reasons). He also mentioned maximizing damage boosts.
2. There was three damage boosts that could of been had
Damage boosts don't happen very much on Dam Agent. The guards are just too inaccurate at that difficulty. Players usually hope for 1 when going for 53. 2 boost runs sometime happen, but very rarely. Remember, this is over a period of 20+ hours playing. AKA is talking about getting 3 more damage boosts than the run on SDA(which has either 1 or 2 boosts I believe). That's a 4 or 5 boost run. That doesn't happen. It just doesn't. You'd have to play thousands of hours to get that kind of run and even then it's doubtful. So lets consider the increadibly unlikely chance of getting a 4 or 5 boost run. Pair that with AKA statement that the guard only opens the gate on rare occasions(must be very rare seeing how nobody else has ever done it). Think something might be just a little suspect there? Oh, and one final quote from AKA:
and more importantly he's in a perfect postion to give constand damage boosts as well as the alarm guard
I'll note that the very first guard you see in Dam Agent is also in perfect position to give damage boosts. Sometimes you can get 1 boost out of him. Never 2 boosts. Usually no boosts.

I downloaded a Zelda II video, and it seems to require an AVI Splitter codec. MPC told me this. I downloaded and installed the codec on this site, but it didn't do anything. What do I do?

I've seen this done in Big Boo's Haunt too. Vid Strangely it doesn't seem to be possible on an actual console though, as I pick up the necessary speed to break out of the level boundaries the game freezes and I have to reset. Here's a vid of me going pretty much as fast as possible on a console without causing a freeze.

Regarding lookdown, on the console version of GE it defenitely does save time. This was first put into practice on Streets. Before lookdown the world record was 1:15, with several people behind at 1:16. 1:16 was relatively easy to get, but 1:15 was fairly difficult. Once lookdown was employed throughout the stage, 1:15's became fairly routine and the WR was quickly dropped down a second to 1:14. Nowadays at the-elite.net lookdown is used wherever possible, but it's especially effective on Streets, and both Surfaces. I think last I heard, it saves 1 second for every 1:15 that you use it or something in that neighborhood. More can be read about lookdown at http://www.speedrunwiki.com/Lookdown As far as emulated play goes, I have no idea what kind of effect lookdown may have. It may be the same as the console version or not, so it's worth checking into. You should also play more surface 1. 1:50 has been done without an emulator.

Well after watching your video for the first time ever just moments ago (I generally never do so, as I like to come up with my own strategies, but I was recently curious about a Revenge of Shinobi run and checked it out and well, the rest is history, I will probably be hooked on this stuff and possibly might contribute an assisted run of games that I am already dominant in without manipulation), I must say that that was truly awe inspiring, Jecy! Most of the techniques that you implemented in this run are absolutely remarkable/sick and I never even thought of doing any of the stuff that you did when I sent in a non tool assisted speedrun to Twin Galaxies last year, around this time. So you can imagine why my time was in the fixteen minute range, instead of in the nine minute range. I made Batman basically destroy enemies that I thought he had to, but man was I ever wrong lol! I am pretty sure that someone will beat my Twin Galaxies' run after seeing your video, or maybe they will just want to keep replaying this incredible video over and over again instead. Great job on the bosses by the way, my strategies were far less dangerous and a lot more cautious, as I did not want Batman to die and was lucky enough that he didn't. Is a Batman Return of the Joker assisted run in you, Jecy? You can probably come up with some amazing techniques in that game. I am just curious, because I also sent in a run for this game as well as one for Batman Returns for the NES to Twin Galaxies (all on the same tape) last year and I am sure that I missed something. Even though I can no longer vote on whether I enjoyed the video I will say it here: YES. That video was excellent and absolutely put the game to shame. If only Batman was that efficient in the movie, he would never have been touched by any of the goons or the clown prince of crime himself.

Not sure if this has been posted since I havent read all 13 pages but I know a really good method of leveling in the first big room in the palace of darkness (at the base of the lofty mountains, the place where joch is at the top), there is a black night to the left that is on a level above the characters, so he cant hit you with melee attacks. He will immediately cast wall on himself when you walk into the room. You can cast a spell on him and it will reflect back and kill one of your characters, which will give the other 2 about 2 or 3 levels instantly and almost double your gold. You can repeat this for a long time and use the money for the expensive gear and items you need at that stage in the game. I got 30ish levels in less than 20 minutes when I did it, granted it was a long time ago.
