Using no zips is a good goal, because they usually take away part of the entertainment, but in SY3 I think the zip is way more entertaining than the utterly long wait for that enemy.
I found the SY3 long setup absolutely hilarious, in fact. Mainly because I thought he was going to use the enemy to bounce, then he did something completely unexpected with it.
Well the fact that a shield was picked up kinda gave away that a hit would be taken. And i think, while the luring was definitely clever, that in this case the no getting hit goal should have priority over the minimal zip goal.
We've never had a "no-hit" goal. The only goals we had were: "Never pick up any ring and never destroy a super ring monitor" and "Using zips when there's no other way to avoid rings". It's exactly because sometimes it takes very precise and clever maneuvering with either shields or enemies or both. I know that it's faster with zips, but when I recorded that part (and yeah, thanks to WST, who actually knows that I'm a girl) I just wanted to see if there's any possibility at all not use a zip. And we thought that through in all the situations. And anyone, who watched our S3&K ringless run should probably know that sometimes one needs very tricky shield manipulations to avoid rings. btw, we're working on SonicCD ringless run for now.

What the hell happened in Spring Yard 3? Great job guys! I would really love to see someone do a fully optimised run of this some time. (And I'm sure you don't need that buzzbomber earlier in SY3, you can go over the bumper, which would make the overall pacing of the run much better.)
What do you mean exactly by "what happened"? THe first part is kinda like in the TAS just with the shield on. And as for the second bumber - there isn't a way to get through it as in the begining of the second act. In the second act there was a red spring which gives you a lot of speed which is needed to successfully go above the bumper. And as for both ending of act 2 and the middle of third one nothing can be used to gain that much speed. We also know that it's possible to glitch one's way through that place using big orange boxes. This way it was made in the TAS, but our goal was to use a little zips as possible and only go for it if it is essential.

That's the worst thing about it. I thought at first that since I bumped into the solution on my first try, it would be easy to do it again and didn't save anything. Just that movie to show that it's possible. Man, I was dumb -_- I found that glitch in a few minutes after I started inspecting LZ2 and I was so confident it's therefore easy to do again. And now I've spent so many hours trying to repeat it and there' nothing, nada, zip. Jeez, I can't sleep because of this. It's haunting me o.o

That's the point. I didn't get hit anywhere and of course I didn't collect any rings (could've figured, since we are doing a ringless run). The only thing I remember is that I got invincibility, got upstairs and the door was there. I hit just a few badnicks on my way to that big room (which were worth 700 points). Then I got a shiled. I was trying to lose it sometimes, but reloaded, as nothing helped to glitch through the door. I tried poking at the monitors without breaking them and when I got to the door, it just wasn't there. Man, it's driving me crazy now! Wish I recorded a gmv of that x.x Anyway, I think that the door failed to spawn somehow, since I couldn't glitch the button to be pressed without breaking the monitor. I found a way to make a fish badnick fail to spawn if you go to the upper left corner and stand on the monitor for a bit. It works all the time. So now I guess we just need to find a trigger position to make the door disappear.

Well, for now we got everything but Labyrinth Sct 2. While we were still working on a full movie file I tried to see if there's anything I can do and the door mysteriously disappeard! I was so happy back then but now I found a problem - I just can't do that again and I have no idea about what triggered that. Here's the video. As you can see the door is open, and the monitor's still there. If only could someone help us with that, then we will be able to post a whole Sonic 1 ringless run. Link to video

Oh, my, how on Earth didn't I think about that?! It's a brilliant way to gain extra height. It woked perfectly well, thank you so much mike89! For now we can complete the whole Spring Yard thing with Sonic. Well, I really hope we'll either find some new glitches or at least anything to get past rings in Labyrinth and Scrap Brain.

I'm just wondering, is there not a way to jump in between the rings to get to the first enemy, rather than bounding on the extra life box, would be worth trying to save those boxes for later if possible.
It's possible to keep the boxes for later use, I also tried gaining speed by hitting the boxes form below, nothing works and what's really bothering me is a disappearing enemy. Btw, we just made it without rings in SY2, but found other difficulties in SY3. Oh, my, what a zone.

Hey there! Me and my friend Razor are trying to make a ringless run of Sonic 1. And we stumbled upon a very awful place at the very beginning of the first act of Spring Yard. There is a spring that ejects Sonic up high right into the rings which cannot be avoided. In the beginning there are three crab badnicks, two buzzers and two monitors which we tried to use to gain height but one of the crabs doesn't spawn if you go a little bit offscreen to the right. And we believe it would give us enough height to go just above the ceiling to bypass those rings. Too bad we have no idea how to make that crab spawn and if it would give us really enough height. There also is a way to glitch through the floor using the speedshoes, right height and angle, but there is no way to use it to glitch through the wall. I wonder if anybody could help us with that, 'cause we think we might have missed some very tiny little detail that would help us somehow get past that. Thanks in advance! btw: that's my attempt to get as high as possible + glitch through the floor Link to video

Zenon, are you going to try doing this with Knux, wherever it's possible? His gameplay is very different of Sonic's, it'd be cool to watch!
I guess not, since overall Knux's gameplay makes it a lot easier, I think. There're always those wallclimbing and gliding abilities and shields' effects are different. IMHO it'll be boring to think through.

Are you really sure? As far as I remember, someone here already made a no-ring run of Knuckles in Sonic 2.
I was talking about Sonic and Knuckles section of S3&K, it's kind of clear since I mentioned Sky Sanctuary. Once you get there you are automatically brought up in a scripted cutscene into three vertically positioned rings. There's no way escaping that because it's only after the cutscene that you are given control of the character. Here's playlist with full completion using either Sonic only or Sonic and Tails together btw http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6A352BBBEBFAA492

Wow, I never even realized that my and Razor's runs would be discussed in such place oO that's an honour to us! By the way, Knuckles' no-rings run would be impossible, since he has three unavoidable rings in Sky Sanctuary. And btw, we just finished all the S3&K levels with no rings. Our goal was to not to get any rings at all and use as little help from Tails and glitches/zips as possible. Because it's really interesting to think through the ways to actually bypass the rings in a beautiful and entertaining kind of way. I think our Lava Reef Act 1 run would be a good example. But if one was really to make a complete TAS of ringless run, then it would be quite easy to do with both Sonic and Tails.
