YES! I'm glad someone else is with me on this obvious fact. And yes, let me know what Genesis rejects are worth looking at and I'll add them to the list... I've had a bias since I'm not terribly familiar with the library of games and Gens seems to be finicky with me, but I'd be happy to correct that :P

Glad you liked it Enhasa. I would be very pleased to have more suggestions, so if you're ever in the mood to do some unearthing for us feel free :) I did play around with the layout recently, adding tabs to shorten the overall length of the page, but I haven't added any new movies recently unfortunately. I believe the stars were turned off because Bisqwit felt that the list was perhaps out of date and inaccurate, which is a reasonable assessment in my opinion. Since the lists by system are so long, I would like to see "Suggestions for Newcomers" return in some form, as well as perhaps other pages of suggestions, like "Movies for Not-so-newcomers" or "Glitchy" (this has been said before and I'll probably say it again...)

Nice. Too bad he doesn't explain it very much :( This might be review for some people here, but Aphex Twin is a big fan of old hardware, his song Peek 824545201 starts with a sample of the Spectrum. And there's his always popular Pac-Man EP on the software side of things.

I've always wanted to see what could be done with Columns, but never got very far myself. There's definitely a lot of options to make an entertaining movie. This game lends itself to making crazy combos potentially, which you had to some extent in your movie, but which go contrary to your goals. The choice of difficulty seems questionable as emu mentioned. I liked your movie enough to try my hand at these goals myself... and made it 10 seconds faster on the in-game clock :) And I'm positive mine could be optimized quite a bit as it is still under 100 rerecords. So good start, and I hope to see a Columns movie on this site someday...

The preferred spelling is "each other" :) Sorry, I try not to be a nitpicker but the appropriateness was overwhelming. And even being a native speaker I am such an anal-retentive perfectionist that I will frequently re-write and re-re-write posts...

Seems like that comment would have been more productive before the movie was finished... perhaps in a forum topic about a WIP? :) You do make a valid point that sometimes people can be overly negative and therefore discourage movies from being submitted at all. But, as long as the author persists I think ultimately a bit of community feedback will always strengthen the submission (or at least not hurt it).

What about the many people who visit the site but don't look at the forums/submission queue? The only way they will see it is if it gets published, so don't we want to help people make the best movies possible?

I enjoyed this run because I have played Pipe Dream before and know how annoying it is :) It looks pretty good. It's interesting that the randomness can't be manipulated. Also, it doesn't appear to "finish the game" though your submission text does clarify that point. You might want to utilize the forums for feedback on games before you submit them. Good job!

True true... Plus ultimately heuristics will only be useful for TASing when combined with a bit of savestates. I'm also thinking about adding a wiki page to centrally store all the various scripts for games. The downside is people would have to copy/paste scripts instead of just downloading, but I think it will be nice to not have to sort through forums to find stuff.

Good stuff, good stuff, keep it up. Though technically these shouldn't be in the "heuristic" section as they abuse savestates thoroughly... :P (Maybe we need a Lua Playground section?) nits, the SMB tile scanning script seems like a good step towards a heuristic bot... is tracking enemies hard? I don't it will be for you. Now you just need to tie all that info together and start generating input based on it. I have a couple of heuristic bots I'll post soon.

Bah, maybe it's too hard for you all to watch, but I thought it was brilliant. You're not *supposed* to watch each one at the same time and magically be able to follow the details. It's an experience. Also, don't tamper with the sound, if you really can't tolerate it there's a volume control. Big yes vote, good show Mr. AngerFist!

Oops, fixed it :) Look forward to the Toad fix, and then can you think of a clever solution for 2-2? After that, the castles where you have to go through a specific route or it repeats will probably be tricky too. I guess I'm getting a bit off topic here...

I modified that example script for smb a bit and tried to use it. It seems to play just fine but recording a movie with it makes it desync very, very quickly. I managed to get it to get halfway through 1-3, but when I tried to play the movie back it dies on the first goomba. Any ideas?
It desyncs for me too, though not always right away :( I tried messing around to see what might be causing it. My best guess would be that loading/saving states a bunch eventually corrupts them. The original simpler version of the script records fine for me. I tweaked the script a bit and got it to go all the way to the end of 1-4... but something when you meet Toad makes the script think you died :) Here it is if you're curious... still can't make a movie of it though.

All of those sandwiches sound good to me; wish I could come over for lunch some time :) I recently had a tasty sandwich that I called the BLAST -- Bacon, Lettuce, Avocado, Steak and Tomatoes, plus a bit of mayo all on sourdough toast. I am also a big fan of fried eggs on sandwiches -- particularly on hamburgers. Butter and thinly sliced ham/prosciutto/salami/whatever on a fresh baguette is also very good. Actually, if I had to pick one sandwich to eat for the rest of my life, I'd be unhappy with whatever I chose after a while. So many sandwiches, so little time.

Will you post your script? I recorded the 1st level with the unmodified script a while ago and it was fine. I'm also curious to see what you wrote :)

The Flash seems like a great candidate for a speed run. This particular version was only made for SMS, but it was done in 1993 and seems to have only been released in Europe. It has relatively good graphics and so far no lag. There is practically no info on it on the interwebs, aside from a cheat code ^>v<v>^ which grants a level select and invincibility. This cheat was useful as this game is pretty confusing and somewhat mazelike. Here's a WIP of the first level. It unfortunately suffers from strange problems in dega. For example, there are item boxes that can be opened. But, if you save a state, open a box, then load the state from before the box was opened, the box will remain open (even though it's graphics sometimes look like it's closed). Nothing insurmountable, but it is annoying. I think this would be a great run for anyone who wants to do an SMS game that looks nice and is really fast.

Heh, with Lua you can watch as many memory addresses as you need... it's just a little tricker ;) I've been playing around with 26/27 and so far no problems at all. Here's a script to run while watching SMB3 to view key inputs superimposed directly on Mario: SMB3 Input Display Thanks again all you crazy coders!

Alden is my real name, in case someone was wondering. Incidentally, the first syllable is pronounced like All and not Al :) I've had various and sundry nick names before, but I finally decided that my name was unique enough by itself... except on freenode where someone already had it :(

Yay! I'm not at my home computer right now, but I did test the smb brute force bot and successfully recorded a movie (I'm running win xp sp2). As far as the API goes, I assume it's the same as the snes9x+lua 0.05, except use FCEU instead of snes9x? That's what it looks like anyways. I have some scripts at home that I can adapt to more rigorously test all the features. Fast work Mr. nitsujrehtona!
