The game is not very hexedit friendly unfortunately -- I tried on an earlier mistake but had to just rerecord entirely. The movie was fine but there was a desync a couple of seconds after the change. Stangely Dizzy's y value was off by one even though everything was the same up until that point. Anyways, the second death is so close to the end I rerecorded the whole rest of the movie and that is what I posted on microstorage. I will resubmit the movie unless someone sees something else to investigate?

So, killing myself the first time saves... 12 frames. Awesome. Not killing myself the second time saves 119 frames overall: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/5221/alden--Dizzy%20the%20Adventurer%20%28U%29%20%28Aladdin%29.fcm Anything else I can look at? I think it's as good as it gets. Thanks!

Thank you all for your fantastic comments. Dromiceius, VANDAL, arkiandruski and the always supportive Mukki: glad you like! mmbossman and jaysmad (and Mukki in the previous thread): RE boat death: After watching again, the first death seems solid to me. The boat is heading left (the "wrong" way) and needs to go all the way left and pretty far right before Dizzy gets close enough to jump (also he can't get up to max speed on such a small platform). The second death on the other hand does look suspicious. I assumed that death was faster, but since it is so far to the right (and heading right) waiting and jumping may be faster. I am going to test both of these to confirm and will let you know! Thanks for the catch! JXQ: Yes, the music is a bit irritating. I played it on mute for a long time and when I heard it the first time was a bit taken aback. But on repeated listening it has grown on me... At least it changes once in a while ;) jaysmad: re other questions: Not sure if this is what you are asking, but the (Aladdin) in the ROM name denotes that this was released for the Aladdin Deck Enhancer which was an unlicensed add on that allowed for smaller and cheaper cartridges to be used. See the notes for a link to wikipedia with more info. This added to my reasons for doing this game as it has a sort of obscure flavor to it. Jumping twice does not make Dizzy jump higher... if you could give me a specific example I could tell you whether it served a purpose or was just for fun. Also, if you can point out any other suspicious areas I would like very much to check it out. AngerFist: Yup, it's repetitive. It's significantly shorter than Treasure Island and Fantastic Dizzy though (at least in theory) so I think it's the best of the three for a TAS. Boco: Good point. I did look into the other games (including your nice walkthrough of Treasure Island) but I opted for this one since it's shorter to begin with and I could skip some of the "required" puzzles. Please, if anyone sees anything that even looks remotely slow please let me know! It's great having so many more pairs of eyes. Thank you again.

Rampage beaten using only the A button http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/5133/alden-one-button-rampage.fcm I was remembering the time me and two friends sat down and beat Rampage. You have infinite continues, and we swapped off using two characters. I think it took about 6 hours. Then I thought about how if you take too long on a level, a little green guy sets explosives under the buildings one at a time until the level is cleared. So theoretically to beat the game, all you have to do is push A -- this gets you through the start screens and activates the continue when you die. Waiting until the character dies every time to push A would be boring, so I experimented with autofire a little, and found 1 on and 5 off in FCEU 16 worked well for my purposes. I also did not want to play at 100% speed obviously, so I assigned A autofire and turbo to the same key... I still didn't want to hold down one key for who-knows-how-long. Fortunately windows is kind enough to provide something called StickyKeys. By default, if you press shift 5 times in a row a dialog pops up asking if you want to enable it. If you do, you can tap shift, ctrl, or alt and it will treat it as if it is held down contstantly. So once I set my hotkeys appropriately, all I had to do was enable StickyKeys, start the movie and push shift once, and wait out the movie. It's 1.5 million frames. 7 hours, almost. 1 megabyte. (If you zip it up though it shrinks to 2 kb ;) Fortunately for me it only took about half an hour on turbo! Probably one of the only movies that took shorter to record than to play back at 100%...

Thanks for the feedback again Mukki, glad it looks decent. As far as the boat goes, it is at a different elevation from where Dizzy jumps so he "always" rolls off the end and falls in the water. The third crossing in my movie where Dizzy actually makes it all the way across without slowing at all was somewhat a miracle (at least to my eyes since I know it can't be done...) I could probably spend another 6 weeks improving this and gain a second or two, but as you say it may be deemed "too boring" anyways so I'm leaning towards submitting.

Thanks for your reply Maximus. Glad to hear that I wasn't missing something obvious. Will look forward to an update! ;)

Well, I sorted through all the metadata counting blah blah and managed to hex edit my name in. I'm with Bag of Magic Food on putting something to do this in FCEU if/when it gets updated...

OK, I got it up and running and saved a version of my movie which shows me as the author. Unfortunately it did not seem to save my soft reset? So it desyncs. Any thoughts?

Thank you! Right now I'm downloading ".NET Framework 2.0" so I can run it.

OK, the moron police need to step in and tell me how to change the author information on my fcm movie file. Maybe I've had too much tecate but I've searched the faq's and forums and only found a strangely vague section that wanted me to enter a number regarding padding or metadata or something. There is a simple way, no? Thanks in advance.

That's funny, I was just thinking about this game the other day and found this thread before you updated it again.... Here's a page with a walkthrough: http://www.neoseeker.com/Games/Products/NES/super_glove_ball/faqs.html It's really long. I think it would be neat to see at least a room done; I think the fastest would be to hover really close to the wall you need to take down and catch and release going one tile at a time. Unfortunately I would guess this gets boring after ~40 rooms. Once I finish my Dizzy run I may work on this. I couldn't even beat this game with my Game Genie when I was a kid!

Glad to hear of more excitement! I hacked the RAM to monitor dizzy's speed, so it looks a LOT faster now, though I had to start over from the beginning ;)

Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks. I've started my new run, already saved 10 frames on the first room. Guess I learned a lot while playing through the first time!

OK, so I'm going to go ahead and revise this as no one seems to think this is a bad candidate so far. The route is solid except for possibly one part where I get the star right before the harp -- it would be slightly faster to get the harp then the star (slightly less back tracking). Other than that I just need to optimize the cloud jumping which is a headache. Here's a dumb question -- should I end the movie after the very last input or after the last input that actually affects gameplay? After kissing daisy there's about 15 seconds of the dialog between dizzy and daisy where you just push A.

Dizzy the Adventurer is based on "Dizzy Prince of the Yolkfolk" which was the game before "Fantastic Dizzy". I believe it was ported and released on the NES after. I could be wrong though.

Thanks for the encouragement! I will definitely write lengthy notes about all the various tricks. I'm debating doing another revision first though.

I just finished my first shot at a TAS of Dizzy the Adventurer. It was the last Dizzy title released for NES and came bundled with the ill-fated Aladdin Deck Enhancer. The run is about 8 1/2 minutes and features some crazy egg acrobatics. If anyone would like to critique it I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance! Here it is: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4053/alden-DizzyAdv.fcm edit 2 new wip: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/5122/alden--DizzyTheAdventurer.fcm

Forgive me if this has already been suggested, but would it be possible to make an area on tasvideos where all videos are listed by submission/publication date? That would be helpful in finding old runs that could be improved.
