My friends have always called me emu since "Emanuel" is so long. It is also somehow related to the bird, but I forgot how. I discovered emulation years later. The story is extremely boring, but I had to post as it somehow fit to Dromiceius' post. Btw, Dromiceius sounds way cooler than emu, but I will never admit that ;)

Despite having had a console before a PC, ironically I prefer playing with the keyboard and tasing with a controller. However, I can only tas with a game pad, when there is no right/left glitch and the emulator allows to change the current savestate (like gens). I then use L1/L2 to change the savestate, L2 for frame advance, R2 to load, the top one of the 4 main buttons to save and the select button to unpause. Since genesis only has 3 buttons, this is sufficient to tas and I'm much faster that way. One downside of this method is, that due to the savestate circling, I can't make a specific savestate at the beginning of an level, which means, that I have to fastforward through the whole movie, when I want to rewatch the last level. When I'm tasing snes, vba or N64, I also use the keyboard though.

I'm sorry, that I am recently not available, but I still don't have internet and I was very busy (and still am busy). To make it up to you, I think I finally got around the jump physics, which I will explain now: First of all, when I'm referring to velocity, I will use the 2bit display of the RAM address FF2507. This means running at full speed is 896, walking is 512 and you start a running jump at 672. Please don't laugh at me, but I don't understand the XX:YYY type of velocities, but since you both use it, I seem to miss an important concept, which I'd really like to learn, if someone finds the time to explain it to me. After hours of testing and weird theories I realized the obvious: When you are midair, the velocity gets a boost of 64 as soon as it falls below 607 (so it never reaches 606). facts: - when you decelerate at a constant rate of -1 and the jump is long enough (aka several resets, thus half the time max speed and half the time min speed), you covered the distance with an average speed of (671+607)/2=639 - so far I found 4 different deceleration rates: i) pushing forward (seems not to matter if A is held): -1 ii) not pushing forward (seems not to matter if A is held): -4 iii) pushing backward (A not held down): -43 iiii) pushing backward and A: -65 (seems to vary) - so theoretically speaking (I did not test it), in order to maximise the average velocity, you want to max the time, where your speed is above 639 and minimize the time where your speed is below 639. So as long as you are above 639 you push forward (-1 deceleration) and below, you try to decelerate as fast as possible to 606. In the ideal case (only between 639 and 671), the average velocity would be (672+639)/2=655. An additional difficulty is, that have to consider facts before and after the jump (do you jump to a lower or upper platform, is there an enemy, do you jump from a slope, do you even want to cover a horizontal distance?). So it will still pretty much come down to trial and error. Side notes: - the max velocity possible with this technique after a jump from an enemy is 1005. This might probably mean, that the enemy boost is 1005-670=335= 0.5*670 At another jump I got 1302-868=434=0.5*868 and 1254-836=418=0.5*836 It is thus considerable, that your velocity is multiplied by 1.5 when you jump on an enemy. - at HWP1 kid chameleon falls at the beginning of the level. I could gain 1 pixel with the new falling technique (I could, however, not use it, as I would not have reached the berserker helmet. As kid chameleon falls into several levels at the beginning, this might be a possible time saver. I hope, this could be somehow helpful. I'm still in HWP1 due to lack of time. As usual, I will let you know, when I find something new.

Cool update. Thanks for the work upthorn. However, I now have the problem, that gens always closes the RAM watch, when I start replaying a movie, which I have to do a lot, to compare input and frames of different movies. Can I change that in some settings?

There is a Star Control II speedrun in bisqwit's channel. Assuming it is the same run, I thought I link to the stream.

This thread was a lot of fun to read through. Also, it bugs me that half the posts in this thread have "in my opinion" or, even worse, "IMO" in them. You're the one typing it, it's painfully obvious it's your opinion. "IMO" in particular baffles me, it's intended to save time by being an acronym when it could simply be left out entirely.
I know what you mean. Still, I prefer to use it. When I make a statement without "in my opinion", it usually stays as an absolute statement, that is commonly known as true. Like "3+4=7" or "the earth orbits the sun". However, when I add "in my opinion", it becomes more relative, as it is solely my point of view, with an admittedly higher probability to be false. This is however a matter of taste and I pretty often fail to distinguish these 2 cases myself. I didn't read the thread, so I may have misinterpreted your post. ^^

Amazing as usual. I like how you handled the stampede and all the little details you took care of (input animation, perfect timed jumps on the ostrich, roaring at beaten enemies, jump glitch in hakuna matata, etc.) The boss fight in "be prepared" must have been really tedious ^^ PS: The movie file somehow failed to deliver the final blow to scar. But I think the problem is rom I used.

Hm, I made a short test tas, using the throwing technique of casey. Throwmania If a submitted run looked like this, I doubt it has a chance of getting published. But I didn't try comboing around either. Maybe someone with more experience (of both the genesis and SNES title) knows, if there is an interesting way to beat the game fast. Anyway, it was fun playing this game again :) PS: I didn't find anything at gamefaqs, but does anyone know if there is a code to make the boss characters playable?

[offtopic] This is the first video game I bought (though I bought the gensis for Streets of Rage 2). When I saw it in the store I first thought it is a beat em up, with the lava monster in the background being a boss. Boy, was I disappointed at first :) [/offtopic] I prefer the graphics over the SNES counterpart (characters look more evil), but it didn't have the super moves/bar, that were implemented in the SNES title. The controls are rather primitive: A for punch, B for kick, C for taunting/desperation moves/casey's bomb. Donatello's "staff pummel" is done by ->,<-,->+B or A(close to opponent, A or B depends on character) Unassisted, easiest "foolproof" methods to win were: -with Ray: sliding until a hit connections and grab him the instance he gets up ("discovered" by my brother; so frustrating, as I could not get out once I fell) -with Casey: simply do the invincibility move over and over (my cheesy tactic :P) Assisted, I unfortunately think it involves indeed throwing the enemy. The best throw I can think of is Casey's one (->+A), due to its smack down (no air time) and fast recovery. I remember often having simply thrown the enemy 4 or 5 times in a quick succession, killing him from full health. I say "unfortunately", as this will become quite dull. There are basically 3 endings (could be more, I don't remember): -easy: text saying something like "try next challenge" -normal: cut scene where the end boss gets away -hard: end boss is defeated and splinter is rescued PS: The genesis game does also have "super moves", so called desperation moves. But they aren't that "flashy" and require to have very little hp. I'd love to see a tas of this game, however not because it is suited for a tas, but only because it was the first game I ever owned.

Damn, why didn't we see that earlier? Great find! Luckily, I only had the first level done, which makes restarting a little easier ;P I hope to find something new in exchange ^^

On a side note: I'm back in munich, so I can restart working on kid chameleon. However, I'm moving in another apartment, where I won't have internet for a while (the secretary could not even tell me if it is a matter of days or months). Maybe I can exchange info at the university though. @RandomPie: Impressive and useful stuff, as always :)

I might as well post what I got so far: bagel brothers Until the first hit to the first head (bagel brothers), I was 648 frames ahead, but lost some frames, which I would have had to redo. (I also notice now, that I missed the jump at a cannon block wall in HWP1, which wastes 2 frames) This becomes unnecessary, as the run will be restarted now anyway. @TheRandomPie_IV: I didn't know you work on the long run. Did you already make up your mind about the goal (most flags, most levels)? Josh the FunkDOC was working on a similar run, but I could not get access to his wip (the only source I had was a edited file truncated posted earlier in the thread). In case I find something useful, I'll let you know. Can't wait to see your run. Good luck edit: As I don't tas when I am at my parents, I will restart working on it by the end of the month, when I return to munich (I'm back in IRC then, too^^)

That is a great find! I never considered airwalking as an alternative to smaller decelerating jumps. Ducking seems to help on other places, too. I was going to resume working on it after I return to munich (I usually don't tas, when I am at my parents), so I'm still stuck at the bagel brothers. But with these techniques I will have to restart again. I am glad for every help I get, so it is better if WIPs are posted more frequently. @TheRandomPie_IV: If you like, we can make it coop, or if you prefer to work alone, I'll leave this project to you. @Truncated: You and Josh did already help me a lot. I would have missed many things without your runs. You should also know, that if you still want to improve the movie yourself, I won't hold you back. You are more experienced with the game and put more work into it. In this case, I would love to help you as much as I can.

Unexpected and impressive improvement, swordless link. Good job The part I like the most was using the boost longer in BitDW. Also cool new methods discovered mr_Roberts_z, AKA and Rikku.

Some members of tasvideos upload videos here via youtube. I sometimes take a look at their channels and find some interesting tases and tricks that go unnoticed, because they are posted in not very active threads or not posted at all. Incredible work, shinryuu! I admittedly didn't realize how well this run was done until I had an insightful IRC conversation with shinryuu where he explained, that he tested different strategies reducing lag several (!) rooms ahead. Watching the input file, for example one might notice that slides are even cancelled in order to reduce lag. Technically easily one of the best tases here. Despite the fact, that you apparently like this kind of work, I am thankful, that you went through all this, in the end providing a first class movie. On a side note, you completed this run really fast, right? I think merely a month ago you weren't even at the mr. X stages.

That game seems actually like good tas material to me. I regret not having seen GManiac's run earlier (did watch it now and liked it). Good improvement soulrivers and nice find with the acceleration trick. That 20 minutes went by surprisingly fast :)

I would try to improve the published run, unless someone else is already working on it. Here is a WIP until the beginning of The Valley of Life. Despite the lack of tools (like frame advance) Truncated had when he made his run, it is extremely hard to not even fall back. Josh's wip was very helpful gaining another second, which adds up to about 300 frames now. Due to skycutters constant speed and well handling of Truncated's micromax I don't expect a lot of additional improvements from now on. edit: uploaded youtube video (1st part of probably 3) edit: current status: at bagel brothers

I doubt, that Knuckles would bring much variety to a sonic 2 tas. His gliding and climbing abilities are rather slow and fit intuitively more the sonic 3 level layouts imo. The only differences that come to my mind, are the faster door trick in chemical plant 2 and climbing into some barrels in metropolis. Also, some walls are different (e.g. nitsuja's route for Emerald Hill 1 is not possible, as the wall after the shield monitor is concrete). Knuckles' ability to retain rings after bonus stages would make an all emeralds run considerable, however, tails would be missing and there already exists such a run (S+K3). Yet, I would be glad to be proven wrong.

Very nice. Route planning, hp/ammo/life management, death abuse, blood and glitches. What more can one expect? The strafing was a little downer, but in my opinion the absolutely right decision. Thanks, mmbossman and nfq, for your work you put into turok.
