Having the ATB on wait makes sense for manipulating enemy commands. When I was testing this last year I tried stealing on every frame for 10 seconds and never got the correct item. It didn't seem to matter what the pointers address value was. I'm curious how anyone was able to steal the mage masher at all. I think about 100 people have done a test run of the first battle.

Hey get back to ff8 :) The address I was watching was 0007B720. My first frame of battle input is 10899 and the value is 87. My battle is completely different than zanoab's. Taking actions or the enemy taking actions advances the value. As does waiting. You're right about the character switch button not advancing the value. I don't even know what that value signifies but more addresses would be helpful.

Have you tried the Wait style of ATB as a source of luck manipulation? I believe this was used in the ff7 run. My disc 1 version is SLUS-01251. I have 562 lag frames at first input. After the FMV is done playing I have 654.

How could I be so stupid... The character switch button advances the RNG just like in ff8. Edit1: When I was testing this game I also found that skipping dialog always takes the same amount of frames regardless of player name length.

I am getting irritated with Final Fantasy 8, and I was curious what this game would look like TAS'd, so here is a quick test run of the first two Dark Tide Orc Levels.

The End probably wont be used again. The animation takes too long. With triple junctioned to strength bosses pretty much get one shotted.

Option 2 seems the most viable.

I think a few more revisions and this will be accepted. Where is Mukki when you need him... If I was him I would be coming out of retirement right about now.

Games that are emulated incorrectly in pcsx and pcsx-rr still won't emulate correctly in PSXjin, correct?

You so just made that post up to keep this bumped! Ok. In regards to 7777HP...10% health is what you get per materia at stage 1. No point focusing on the levels after that as any bosses used with this strat would be much later on in the game (post Mideel). Let's say for arguments' sake the character you apply this to Cloud or Cid (IMO shouldn't be Tifa or Cait Sith) is approx. lvl. 19. by then. Say they have around 800hp. This is how far their HP could go... 800 > 880 > 968 > 1065 > 1172 > 1289 > 1418 > 1560 > 1716 (that's one weapon with max slots) 1716 > 1888 > 2077 > 2285 > 2514 > 2765 > 3042 > 3346 > 3681 (and an accessory at max slots!) Just wouldn't work, mate. There's the factoring in of buying 16 of this materia and an additional inventory time even if you manipulated the exp and hp points per level well enough later on in the game. Slots and Death Sentence shenanigans it is!
I thought equipping materia reduced your max HP. Shows how long its been since I've played this game.

Antd. Forget what I said earlier. You should do whatever you think is the fastest. Use the pause glitch for manipulation and use Cait's slots. If it breaks the game so be it. There is a non assisted run for a reason. Edit: And when this run is finished we will get started on the ff9 run! (Wishful thinking, I know)

I just watched the new single segment any% SDA run which is 20 minutes faster than the current published tas run. Anyone still working on this?

While it's annoying, this "entertainment" bull that's been here truly sucks. I want to watch the fastest possible, not just some approximation thereof. Haters gonna hate. If it saves time, use it.
If you want the fastest possible run this isn't it. Antd already said he wasn't using Cait Sith's Slots.

4 frames per battle? I vote no.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVlx144XdIc Pause glitch This is what it will look like if used. It can be used to slow down in-game clock, ATB, RNG, Status ailments... Animation continues at normal speed The battle ends 4 frames earlier (we think due to the pause messing with the loading of the victory sequence, or something) Common applications may involve slowing down enemy ATB and manipulating the RNG
Are you asking if the speed vs entertainment tradeoff is worth it?

thanks any ideas how to improve on this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lYRe3T_i2E (regular speed run strategy) i don't have: cross slash right arm i have managed to defeat red dragon in 45 seconds using these attacks: tifa counter attack, tifa DB, cloud attack, aeris grenade but it isn't impressive to almost match the time of the above video one strategy that i will try next is added-effect_time to inflict slow this may save time (animation of red dragon's second attack) just found out red dragon is not immune to poison.... damn wikies!!!!
How would Poison help?

Roughly 9% faster than the current PC SDA run. I'm not sure what the version differences are. Other than load times. and terrible sound. I still have my original copy from 1997 in my closet. Disc 1 is pretty beat up but it still plays! Watching this triggers a lot of childhood memories (mainly the music.) I can't wait for a sub 7 hour run. Keep it up!
