This is great to talk about but just figuring out the luck mechanics has me stumped.

I'll test wait next. Should I still turn text speed to fast and change names to single letters? When a dialog is skipped all text inside is rendered in 1 frame, including the character name. I'm just thinking about non skippable texts. I don't know if fast text speed affects those.

It's frame perfect so far. I went with not stealing since I don't know how. (Good reason I know) Who knows maybe manipulating the steal and going into the menu to equip it takes the same amount of time as not using it. When you find out how to steal quickly we can compare runs!
What's the alternative to stealing? I thought a Mage Masher steal was pretty much required to be able to use Tidal Wave on the first Black Waltz. edit: also, you have a lot more to work with for that one first steal. Try to see if there's a difference between waiting a frame before starting a new game (hex edit one frame into the movie file). That might change things. Otherwise, I couldn't really say. One of the memory search gurus should take a look at this.
I don't have any friends here yet. As far as what I can do myself I will try adding frames before selecting new game. I figure I need to put up something to get people interested. Edit1: Waiting 1 frame when choosing new game did change the 1st battle. This seems to have the exact same effect as waiting on the last dialog. It doesn't matter who attacks who or who steals first. The items stolen seem to be set in stone. Maybe having the ATB on wait would allow changing of the RNG during battle by waiting to input commands. But this would slow down the run too much. I will try the new game delay with a few more frames.

I'm up to the first save of the non assisted run with fast disk speed. 30 seconds faster I'm now working on asking other forum members for help with the rng/stealing/lua scripts!! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/805402435/f9%20wip3.pxm 29700 frames. 1437 rerecords. No echo buffers were hurt in the rerecording of this video.

It's frame perfect so far. I went with not stealing since I don't know how. (Good reason I know) Who knows maybe manipulating the steal and going into the menu to equip it takes the same amount of time as not using it. When you find out how to steal quickly we can compare runs! Mostly simple movement and text skips at this point. As for reading dialog boxes they aren't actually completely rendered. Square and X both skip dialog so I can use each on consecutive frames. Input is very precise compared to chrono cross and legend of legaia. Less frustration = more fun. Vivi is just now using his fake ticket! 23k frames in. I'll link a pxm if there is enough interest. edit 9: Skipped text always takes 6 frames to render from the appearance of the dialog box to all text being rendered. Changing character names to a single letter may not be faster. Or even setting text speed to maximum. I don't think changing these affects non skippable text either. I figured I would take the safe route and change character names to a single letter and turn on faster text just in case.

I'm back working on my WIP. Holidays are taking up my time. I'm testing steal manipulation. I can't find any information on how this works. Trial and error at this point. Will keep updates going. Update1: Looks like steals are set in stone when the battle starts. I'm testing waiting frames on battle entry. Update3: I've tested entering battle on every single frame for 120 frames now. I've had 8 different battles in those frames. The frames listed are when to press x to confirm the dialog that starts the battle. Battles are as follows: (Fullest ATB on battle start) 10523 -10567 (Marcus/Zidane) 10569 -10579 (Cinna/Blank) 10581 -10583 (Marcus/Blank) 10585 (Blank/Cinna) 10587 -10601 (Zidane/Marcus) 10603 -10631 (Cinna/Zidane) 10633 -10639 (Cinna/Blank/Marcus) 10641 - (Marcus/Zidane/Cinna) I can't find any pattern to this. Update4: How do I affect the rng once in a battle? I've tried stealing every frame for 50 frames with the exact same outcome. It's like the rng never changes once a battle is commenced.

I like some things about this compared to chrono cross. No drop manipulating or accuracy manipulating. Theres nothing worse than a perfect battle without the right drops. It's easier on a per attack basis. In any case while I'm stuck manipulating the first battle in chrono I'll copy that test run. Do you still have your pxm Zanoab? Edit1: Way less lag than chrono cross in battles. More enjoyable doing the first fight so far. Fully optimized test run tonight!!

I use the tas plugins when rerecording. I just use opengl2.9 and eternal for capturing. I tried interpreter mode and the movie still syncs. Making me think it didn't change anything. The SDA run may have been run on a PS2 with faster load times turned on for all I know. This is my first real attempt at tasing and I'm thinking I should pick a 2d sidescrolling snes game first just to learn the basics. manipulating these actual battles isn't very fun. I understand the game runs at 30 fps but sometimes in battles it drops to 20. So suddenly your frame that captures input is on an odd frame instead of an even frame. and you have to skip 3 or 4 frames sometimes. I wan't to run this frame perfect but manipulating this rng makes me want to quit like bisqwit did. I can get desired results but its just not optimal to me. Keep it up on medievil... I'll spend a few more hours on these first battles....

PXM Up to the World Map 1446 rerecords Notes: Choosing vibration off somehow didn't cost me any frames. Thought it looked cooler than waiting a frame. Manipulated Mel for the opening scene because she has the shortest name. Pressing a different direction for a few frames at zone entrances is used to manipulate monster spawn locations. I tried to make movement smooth, unless it sacrificed frames. I wanted to get to this point to compare to the current SDA run, first segment. You can imagine my surprise when I checked the inventory screen to find I wasn't any faster than the non-assisted run! Its exactly 20000 frames from power on to control on the world map. Edit7: It looks like black loading screens between areas are about 2 seconds longer on pcsx. Thats the main source of all the lost time. Edit8: Quick 720p dump. opengl2.9 maxed/eternal. Desyncs. Gives you an idea of the run though

Got the first town cleared unassisted... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f57_j7klLGI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iohrw1kMi08 Its actually slower than Adarsus' run. Just in 720p. Pcsx-rr does not crash on already learned arts, Magic, Spirit, or Items. So in the meantime I will play unassisted when using a new art is required splice it in with savestates. I was starting to get tired of recording appending and encoding 24GB of video just for that first 15 minutes. I just want a nice hd testrun on youtube. Sorry for double post... The game always runs at 30fps. In zoomed out scenes it runs at 20 or 15 sometimes. emulator reports 60 the entire time but fraps shows otherwise. One of the reasons why the game is so slow paced.

I want to see antd not quit after the immense amount of time he has put into this project. Is there a strategy for that?

Exciting updates! Your latest post on page 16 has errors. The Part 10 link sends you to part 13. The Part 13 link is broken. The new links on page 1 work fine. Keep it up. I can't wait for more progress!

So lua scripting was added in .1.1. p0rtal_0f_rain mentioned something about creating a script to possibly bypass the hyper art crash. If I knew anything about this I would research it...

Postponed due to emulation problems. Thanks for the responses. Still not working in rr 0.1.1. I've been following this site for at least 5 years now. It makes me smile to see the infamous Sir VG and fractal post in my thread. :)

I don't know... Groobo's run is already down to 3:12 He uses old patch versions where the major glitches are still present. The PSX version doesn't have nearly as many glitches.

A lot of games I want to run have FMV's. I may just include them.

I haven't found a way to do this effectively yet... I tried the disc swap deal with the linuzappz cdr plugin 1.4. 1. Press esc the instant the FMV starts. 2. Change the iso to Disc2. 3. Press Run and immediately press esc again. 4. Change the iso back to Disc1. 5. Press Run. Maybe its all about the timing? I've had times where the emulator crashes and other times when it skips the FMV but the graphics arent displayed properly afterward. (dialogue boxes are clear or solid black) I want to start work on my ff9 demo :( I'm guessing this has been covered before but I couldn't find anything relevant with the forum search feature.

Fastest non-assissted I've seen is about 7 hours to reach excalibur 2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzQlBRt1v08 Some interesting techniques used in this video. Some of the luck manipulation almost looks tool assissted. I might use the same route as a start.
