I'm enjoying it so far. Let's hope Mednafen's tools mature just a little more so you have an easier time with rerecords.

Magic Engine is the prettiest TG-16 emulator, but in addition to being for-pay, it's also not that great in the compatibility department. Many CD games have volume problems and sound quality issues. Mednafen is one of the hardest to use for newbies (no GUI) but also the most accurate at emulation. Ootake is in-between Magic Engine and Mednafen in that it has more accurate emulation than ME and is easier to use than Mednafen, but isn't as slick in appearance as ME. I think Ootake and Mednafen both have lots of TAS potential in that some of the hooks are already there. It's just a matter of developing them such that they are acceptable with the technical requirements of this site so as to be suitable for TASing. I'm not a programmer so there's jack shit I can contribute, but once an emulator is approved I'll just right in with TAS submissions.

Funniest TAS I think I've ever seen. Glad to see it published.

Wow. The run was pretty good, but the game itself was also impressive. Quite fantastic animation and special effects. I think it was quite an entertaining speed run due to both the picturesque nature of the game and some good playing.

Given that the Genesis uses highly controlled video display (only x resolution settings, only x colors available, only x colors at a time/per frame) a custom, intermediary codec makes a lot of sense. I hate dealing with billions of codecs, but that's usually because people misuse them. Having codecs optimized for certain purposes is a different beast altogether.

Well, nobody should ever NOT follow through with a TAS system because it isn't my thing :) I've watched an awful lot of the ones published here.

OK, I'm going to admit, here, that TASing text adventures really holds no appeal to me. The entertainment value for the audience seems quite limited.

The Bloody Wolf movie file played back with no desync. I haven't tested any of the CD-based games because I do not have them right at hand. Did you record the CD games across many loading gaps? Those are likely to be the most deadly. As for ROMs, it looks like Mednafen is getting closer to being usable for PC Engine TAS purposes.

Would someone with the ability to make this kind of thing happen please indicate what it would take for the rest of us, those without such ability, to convince you to help out?

Yeah, Hugo isn't so hot these days, but Mednafen is extremely accurate if a bit unfriendly due to a lack of a GUI. And Ootake is almost as accurate as Mednafen and has a GUI.

Well, hippo's last post to this forum was the last one posted here, so I can only assume he's got other priorities. Damn! I wanted so badly to start working with some PCE games.

This is about the only system I'd be interested in TASing for, as most people don't appreciate the game library the way I do. But with three excellent emus out there with source available (HuGo, Ootake, and Mednafen) you'd think someone would have managed to have nailed this one by now.

Wow, I didn't think anyone could make this game so entertaining. I owned the PC Engine version for several years and this SNES conversion always disgusted me (except for an excellent translation of the music), in part because the levels seemed to bland by comparison. Thanks for reinvigorating (if only a little) a bland game for me!

So, anybody have any suggestions for what we should TAS once Hippo generates a working TAS tool for us? Keep in mind that CD games may have problems, so HuCards/TurboChips should be the initial targets. I'm thinking Bloody Wolf. (Sorry, Hippo, didn't mean to misunderstand.)

Hippo, if your ego gets me some tg-16 TAS-ing, it will be more than deserved.

Are you trying to say that life is more important than video games? Oh, such blasphemy! That would mean I've been living a lie! Naw, it's all good. Sure, I'm chomping at the bit, but I can't program a lick, so all I can do is post in a forum and make a bit of noise here and there. Hippo, thanks much for your efforts. I hope things bear fruit eventually.

Sadly, few of us here have deep pockets, but if people agree on a common bounty and we collect many small donations toward it, we might get enough to influence someone.

Wow, this is great news. Ootake sees rapid improvement anyway, but having another pair of eyes working on trying to add better recording support is great. I hope we get TG-16 re-recording working before too long. I'm betting a Bonk's Revenge speedrun would be great fun to watch.

I don't know how long Fatal Rewind is, but it's bad. Some good short games are Ranger X and Target Earth, though I'm not sure how TAS able they are. I'd love, however, to also see a Genesis Battletoads or some Rolling Thunder. -To stay on topic, this movie was hard to watch and was quite boring, despite being such an impressive run. Alas, quality TASing and quality entertainment are not always synonymous.
Post subject: Ootake actually is pretty decent

So, the PC-Engine emulator Ootake is no Magic Engine, but it's pretty decent, at least for HuCards (haven't tested CDs yet). And HuCard TAS is the most logical place to start. Can you imagine a TAS of Bonk's Adventure or of Devil's Crush? Dude! Ootake also has source available through the web page. Any enterprising programmers want to please bring the PCE into the world of TAS? It's a completely logical step, really. It NEEDS to be there with the SNES and Genesis. It was my favorite console of the generation, and IMO better than the Genny even without the CD attachment. Help us out, somebody! Give us PCE TAS!

Isn't the current state of emulation for those platforms, in general, just WAY too immature at present?

I was thinking we'd get together a very short list of consoles/emus which notably lack recording support and go from there. They would have to be emus with source code available, and the conditions of getting the donations, however meager, would be that they pass muster for rerecording for this site, barring a couple conditions that could be negotiated like ROM size. Maybe polishing Final Burn Alpha enough for it to be approved, or modifying Hugo enough to start posting HuCard TG-16 runs on the site. I'm sure there are dozens of other projects that would also quality. RAINE maybe (if source is available) for some arcade games. I understand from reading in the forums that MAME would be a whole other can of worms so maybe there are other arcade capable emus we could use to work around that.
