Well with the advent of a new 100% run, I'll start looking around for any possible new timesavers. Here is one for the dachora room. Looks to save 5-10 frames over the mockball method... http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1524501480/dachora.smv

Snes9x v1.51 had more issues than simply desyncing. There were many timing issues, where it interpreted lag differently than the real console. So much so, that I think v1.43 had more accurate timing overall. What really does not make sense about transitioning to v1.51 is that there is a new INCREDIBLY accurate emulator known as BSNES, which is what we should be transitioning to after it obtains rerecording capabilities.

Teri's run will playback on even the newest emulator. I just played it back with v1.43 +v15.3 (LUA 0.05).. http://tasvideos.org/movies/smv/terimakasih-supermetroid-items14p.zip

why not just compare the 3 existing 14% runs? The routes are damn near identical, so it makes for the most accurate comparison. 1. Teri's 2. Saturn's 3. Spoofer's

Could not agree more. The xray scope destroys the beauty of the 100% run... The beauty is seeing samus plow through all the rooms with great accuracy, using all available items. IMO It is the primary reason the 100% run is the highest rated entertainment run on the entire site. Another problem with xray is the plethora of new route possibilities. I consider myself a bit of an expert on making SM routes, but with xray glitching... everything we know goes out the window. First one would have to map out every room where xray glitching is beneficial, then consider the rooms that can be broken into early, then you would need to recalculate an entire new route based on it. I told spoofer already, that I would vote NO on any submission that attempts to obsolete CP's run using Xray glitching.

I don't think Spoofer's submission text had any negative attitude. He is not overly cocky, and freely admits that the run will probably not be published. I think the submission text is a relatively lighthearted way of stating all the work that he put into the run... I see nothing wrong with that. If my opinion counts for anything, I would say that everything written in the submission text is accurate too. As for the run itself, I have been following it's development since the beginning. Though the route ended up being inferior to the ice beam route, this is still a very entertaining run. I particularly enjoyed the extra effort put into the pre-boss 'entertainment' scenes. It is a shame that the Mother Brain battle had to be so drawn out though. The Luck manipulation in this run here is absolutely amazing, when you consider the fact that there are only a couple instances when we actually see Samus stop to refill. In regards to overall optimization, this run is right there at the top with CP's glitched run. I can't necessarily say that this run should be published, because unfortunately the route just ended up being slower. This run does offer something unique, so it should at the very least be linked to in one of the published runs. Anyway, congrats on finishing Spoofer!

Superb run! Even the boring areas are made entertaining, with all the excessive shooting and twitching. Everything in this run has that nice Cpadolf smoothness to it :D Great job dude. Also it seems you are now a Judge, congrats man!

Great job guys! Instant yes vote. I am currently typing up a spreadsheet with all the frame gains/losses, in case any viewers are interesting in knowing exactly what has been improved over my old run. I'll put my comments on there too. When I originally posted this new route on the forum, I also mentioned how it would be best played for in-game time. The only changes would be to collect the other PB pack in red brinstar, and get the pink brinstar missile pack. 2 additional pause screens would also be added. These small changes + the door re-optimizations would probably only save 15 seconds of in-game time. With this knowledge, it seems very unlikely that 22 would ever be achieved.

Yep, that's correct DoctorJohn. When discounting the doors and item collections, Cp's run finishes approximately 30 seconds faster than mine. It will be interesting to see the next generation of SM tases compared with this lua script. I know the current gen any% runs are both pretty improvable.

Pure ridiculousness with that Ridley fight! Yes indeed. Talking about future metroid runs, I would love to see a glitchless any%, but I dunno if there is much of an audience for that. People here tend to prefer glitched out runs.

oh man, that was awesome. Never thought I would see the day when my run would get pwned. It is amazing how simple that trick is too, and yet it has been overlooked this whole time. Great job Aglar! I think the last hurdle in the game is finding a way to walk past donkey kong on the 3rd level... I think I had a dream about that being possible.

Is the Ice Beam 14% route faster or slower than the speed booster 14% route?
Officially it is not known, because a full speed booster run has not been made yet. Saturn has stated that the ice beam route is faster, based on his own observations. I tend to believe Saturn is correct, but would not be surprised if spoofer owns us all :P As for me, I am not actively working on any runs. I am looking forward to seeing what the other talented TASers on this forum can produce though. Maybe one day I will start up a new TAS, but for now I am just looking for new techs and optimizations. Kriole, Have you guys decided to go with the new route that I posted, the one which skips the spazer beam? If you don't mind telling, how many seconds would you estimate that you are ahead of my run? Might be hard to tell due to the route changes though :/

Well, I doubt that you would have enough time to get up to the correct height before he crashes in to you since he is so close.
Thanks, that is what I was trying to say. Draygon will be moving at high speed, so that when I initiate the short charge, I cannot get into the correct position fast enough.

Solon, In regards to the super missiles, Cp explained it well. It's funny, because I think I posted an smv a long time ago which attempted this same thing, but with super missiles. The only thing it did was turn draygon white. Though with better timing and maybe firing the grapple beam twice, it might be possible. As most of you have already noticed, this tech is unfortunately useless in every type of run. As Saturn pointed out, it is actually slower than the two round shinespark method. I know that with some fine tuning, a spark is possible with my method also. The only problem is that I don't think I can get 2,000+ damage with a spark being used in the center of the room. I might look into that more. Like Cp said, the other problem with this tech is that the super missiles and powerbombs must be at 00.

Ladies and gentlemen, behold! My legit* draygon 1 rounder :D *does not use plasma/xray, which requires out of bounds travel.

Spoofer, Wouldn't have been better to enter the room with all 5 missiles? I could be wrong, but kriole's 1 rounder looks faster due to less movement from phantoon after HP hits zero. Either way, it was a pretty awesome demonstration. I have to say that I agree with the decision to not work on the any% in-game run. I think the category is on the way out, with the new realtime run anyway. Have you shared your frame improvements with Kriole and Taco? I sure hope so :P

hmmmm.... Not sure I agree with you Spoofer... Did you consider that Samus' shinespark is movable on the subpixel level? The timing of the spark itself could play a huge role. Samus spark position ( x ) screen position ( + ) firing location ( = ) many possible combination's :D

It does seem highly suspect. A lot of the tricks look like they were done without frame advance. It makes it hard to believe that this one trick, which requires an absurd amount of variables to be spot on, would be possible by the same player. By the same token, the person would have to reasonably skilled video editor or found some magical cheat code, if it was fake. It obvious that there are cheats/mods being used in in almost every clip. Take a look at how many power bombs samus has, for example. I still am not entirely convinced that it is fake though. Unfortunately without an SMV, it would be almost impossible to reproduce the exact conditions shown in the clip. When factoring the screen position and samus' position to the subpixel level, the amount of combinations is mind boggling.

I don't really have a scientific answer. Getting a missile to go through the gate was always easy, but it was getting to to register on the green button that was 'impossible'. The missile would always explode past the button, because samus was not able to make the room scroll to the right fast enough. I always hypothesized that a shinespark could cause a rapid scrolling of the room, in which the gate position lined up quickly enough with where the missile would register for a hit. I hope that video is legit... I wouldn't mind seeing an smv for proof.

.....WoW It seems legit to me. The amazing part is that they used the same strategy I originally devised many pages back- - Using a shinespark to put the gate in the correct vertical position when the missile passes through. I tried for so long, it is nice to finally see it accomplished. As for the new route, it does open up a whole new can of worms. The in-game route is now probably 20 seconds faster. might post new route ideas later on....

mikwuyma, I am probably not going to make a new run anytime soon, though I am sure a few seconds can be shaved off the current run. I had redone the entire first stage, and managed to save time on the boss through lag reduction, but I lost motivation on the 2nd level. Unless player 1 and player 2 input and be played independent of each other and then hexed together, I have no idea how to make the overhead levels perfect. I realize you are probably correct, in that the stone attack is not the fastest for the final boss. It would definitely be worth looking into, if a new run is to be made by someone.

Great run man! Optimizing those top view levels sure are a pain. Doing it with 2 players is four times as fun, lol. Does anyone know, do the bosses have more HP when playing with 2 players? It sure seems like Cp was able to take out the level 2/5 bosses much quicker than I do in my run. Maybe the gun choice? or less lag?

Well, I don't feel like finding my old post, so I'll just rewrite my route again. - Everything from landing site to phantoon would be the same as both published runs. If aiming for in-game time, it would probably be best to collect the missile pack near the charge beam (like in Cp's run), as well as the 2nd power bomb pack in the red brinstar area. - From phantoon, then run would then head straight to norfair. The spazer beam would be skipped, and Kraid will be put off until later. - Off the norfair elevator, go directly right. Ice beam will be collected later. High jump will never be collected. - Go through the hot rooms and get the speedbooster, probably needing to stop by the pipe bugs to refill energy. Go down and get the wave beam/ missile pack. Take the route to LN, as done in my movie. - With such low energy, some time sacrifice must be made. I remember Cp posting a way of clearing the pillar room without a shinespark. Will come in handy. - Navigate to ridley's area like usual. Pick up the power bomb expansion in the room before the pirate elites. - Kill elites, make sure you've got 10 super missiles. Make sure you have at least 10 power bombs before fighting ridley. 10 pbwavecombos = 12,000 damage to ridley. 10 super missiles = 6,000 damage to ridley. - Grab ridley's item drops, then get the e-tank. I was thinking that it would be best to skip this etank and grab the highjump etank instead, but the energy is needed now unfortunatly. - Head on out of LN. Before exiting upper norfair, go and grab the ice beam. - After getting back to brinstar, to right and kill kraid. The speed booster saves much time here. Grab kraid's etank, as well as the 4 power bomb drops that the drainer bugs leave behind. - Go to maridia, and do like I do in my run. Effort must be made to refill all the power bombs. - Once maridia is done, go to tourian. Hopefully, you've got 10 power bombs, or 15 (if aiming for in-game time). Use the pbwavecombo on mother brain. Charged ice/wave takes care of the rest. Time will be lost on the mother brain. 13 seconds slower than even my published run. I have added up all the time gained through out the route, and it is pretty substantial. Ridley alone saves a good chunk of time. Kraid with speed booster is big. Though I think that the in-game time would be pretty darn close to the current in-game route, I know for certain that this would beat the current realtime route.
