This run represents an impressive cumulative effort of research and provides a milestone in the Super Metroid running community, for which reasons I give this a big yes vote. It is however quite sad that each run holds less and less entertainment value as each submission comes in. I think it is important to remember that we keep the traditional runs as glitch free as possible. Super Metroid runs are most entertaining when we see as much as possible. I would hate to see any type of xray climbing or out of bounds travel in the amazing any% and 100% runs we have today. I look at how badly the MegaMan and games have been destroyed on this site and it really bothers me how people prefer those runs over their predecessors.

5 missiles / 15 super missiles would be the lowest. You can check out either of the low% runs to get an idea of how it works.

3 tanks are the bare minimum to survive the mother brain's super beam attack.

To pro obsolete people: Fair enough. Though you should get some facts straight first. People actually do enjoy Saturn's in game run. It has a very high rating. Saturn's run is actually much superior to the real time any% run on a technical level. He actually saves frames in every single room of the run. The only and I mean only reason he did not crush the real time run was because he went for the plasma beam at the very end of the run and lost a lot of real-time. Because of this I cannot endorse removing the technically superior run, and I cannot endorse removing the technically faster real-time run. They should both remain until a single run beats them both.

Wow this is really getting sad now. If you people are too blind to see the difference between the xray run and a legit nonglitched run, I worry about the future of our world. I also love how my name and the other names of the people on the submission thread were not mentioned in the anti-obsolete category.

Well you are correct that it does not specify no-glitch in the title. Though I think the reason for this is that the any% category predated the glitched run. Since it came first, it wouldn't necessarily make sense to retroactively modify it's description, but rather to make a note in the title of the newer glitched run. In fact 99% of the runs on the site do not need to explicitly state "no-glitch" in their title, because it is understood that most runs are just normal runs and do not use massive glitch abuse.

But it is a totally different category. The in-game run does not use any game breaking glitches at all. It also does not artificially lower the in-game timer. How can this particular submission be compared to it? If you wanna just remove the in-game run, that is a different discussion. This submission however should not be the reason for it's removal.

It always amazes me how complicated people have to make these obsoletion discussions. The submission sums up exactly how this run should be published, which coincidentally is how the majority of people feel too. Heck the author is basically laying out a perfect blueprint to obsolete 2 of his OWN runs. Why discuss further? Just publish this run and have it replace the 2 other glitch category runs. Leave all the other runs alone. This should be making people happy, since it lowers the amount of super metroid runs. It should not be an excuse to arbitrarily start removing the other non-glitch runs. I was originally against publishing the any% in-game run, but since it is here now, it would not be right to simply remove it because you feel there are too many super metroid runs. Ideally a new any% run will eventually be submitted which will also serve as a dual obsoletion for both the realtime and in-game time any% runs.

This is very interesting. I always thought that the cure spell attack on the dark king was included as an Easter egg by the developers. Do you think there would be any chance of doing this on the other bosses who have higher HP?

Dual obsoletion for the win! Great job finishing this run so quickly after the new strategy was discovered. Loved every minute of it. Yes vote. Feos: This run should obsolete the following: SNES Super Metroid (JPN/USA) "GT code, game end glitch" in 14:52.88 by amaurea, cpadolf, total. (because it is the fastest known run in existence which this run was previously) and SNES Super Metroid (JPN/USA) "X-Ray glitch" in 21:25.12 by Cpadolf. (because it utilizes the same x-ray glitch and does it faster)

Is there something specific about that door to the left of the ship that makes this trick possible? Are any of the other 3 doors viable options? Especially the super missile door to the right of the ship, which would certainly save some time. Of course if it is only possible with the door on the left, then it would probably require some testing to see if it is quicker to go through red brinstar or blue brinstar when heading towards the landing site.

I really enjoyed the movie. Certainly a yes vote. Though I would not consider this as a low glitch run, as the submission text outlines a total of 5 major glitches being utilized to skip almost 1.5 hours of play time. I hold hope that one day we will see a run that uses no glitches at all.

Great job guys!! It is cool to see the game pushed to it's theoretical limit. It will be interesting to see how this one gets judged, and whether it replaces the old x-ray glitch run. Yes vote here. Kudos for saving the animals too!

Thanks for the encode EEssentia! I gotta say the pause screen abuse looks less horrible than I thought it would. It is nice to see that it does indeed save a nice little chunk of time. When it is finally done, an encode can be made using the script to remove all doors/items/pause screens, which will make it almost unnoticeable anyway. I really like the energy farming in the first few norfair rooms. Looking forward to seeing this one completed. Keep up the good work man!

Wow, that is very interesting to hear. I had no idea that the clock essentially stopped when utilizing that trick. This would mean that a zero minute final time could be possible if someone had the patience to TAS out the entire game using the pause trick :P

Though the realtime gains would probably be a wash using the pause trick, I am sure the in-game savings would be vast. Maybe just enough frames to push it to the next minute mark?

CP, Loving your latest WIP. Did you ever consider using the pause screen trick to avoid death instead of going all the way through kraid's area to obtain the varia? It would look horrible, but might be faster overall.

Seeing how the space/time beam can enter Tourian from behind, is it totally out of the realm of possibility to enter Tourian backwards somehow using the xray climb?

I am happy to hear this is being worked on. Best of luck to you! Do you plan on using the same overall strategy as inichi used in his non glitched test run?

Nice run, and a great improvement over the published run. Voting yes. Do you have any plans on doing any other Contra 3 runs? I know my 2 player tas can be improved by reducing lag throughout and by "dual vectoring" in the top down levels. It would be nice to see the run on a more accurate emulator too.

Tough call. Personally I think this is superior to the any% run, because it shows off much more of the game and has many more crazy techniques. So I would swap that run's star for this run if it were up to me. On another note, has anyone managed to make a cutsceneless encode of the run yet?

For what it's worth, I agree with Derakon's suggestion. I also feel that subsequent runs should be able to bend to new standards for the purpose of obsoletion. If a new run decides to fight pink nu, and it adds 3 hours to the run, it should obsolete the old run, as long as every other comparable part is of equal or better quality.

There is no need to test them all. I got such a low frame delay with the one I used, that if I continued to search for more 100k tickets, the seed delay would actually be greater than the cards delay, thus the delay I used was the lowest. Iirc I tested the first available 40 seeds. The total frame delay was lower than that. I couldn't tell you how many of the values paid 100k. I found about 4 of them before I figured out the lowest seed and card combination. I am sure the amount is around 10%.
