Whats your point? Why didn't you just post the improvements in the SMB2 thread so that we viewers could know why his run was so poorly made? Or maybe if you posted the improvements, he could have made a new run and we would have a better run on the site than we do now. Who ever said anything about a novel? Edit: Since I made this post, phil edited his post to say how he never edits his posts. Oh my goodness!

You said the movie WAS improvable, and didn't say HOW it was improvable. And I am not going to search though old threads because you tend to edit your posts away.

Where, When?????? Is it an attempt to insult me?
Nope, not trying to insult you. You said you were working on an improved version of the SMB2 run, hence you make the claim that Donamer's movie had mistakes. Pretty simple logic.

Vatchern: Maybe 3 or 4 movies have achieved "perfection". Do we know for a fact that those really cannot be improved further? Perfection is a relative term. Perfect now, later... maybe not.

Are you serious phil? I am not complaining or whining at all. I just stated the rules I live by. If people don't want to share their tips then it is no skin off my teeth. You have made some great movies. But you are a dickhead when it comes to criticizing someone else's work. On NUMEROUS occasions you have said that other people's movies contain errors, and failed to state what they were. You claim that DonamerDragon's SMB2 movie has flaws, yet his movie was better than yours. What does that make you? Seems like you missed all of his little improvements in your run didn't you. I don't need help making my movies. I know what I am doing, otherwise I would not have chosen to TAS a particular game. I just get pissed when someone tells me that I can do it faster or better without explaining how.

Yes, that is pretty much what I meant. It only applies when you know a fellow TASer is also working on the same game as you. If you were working on Chuck Rock and no one else was, it wouldn't really matter if you posted about some technique you found.

Phil: Those 2 statements in no way contradict one another. Phil: The goal is perfection. Perfection is unobtainable, but it can still be a goal. Also let us not forget about the entertainment these movies provide. Phil: I agree that competition breeds perfection. I even stated that during the monopoly wars. I believe in friendly competition. Share your knowledge, then make your separate runs. Baxter: If the amount of work you put into a run really mattered, wouldn't it be exciting to see someone else beat your run knowing how much extra work they must have put into it? Maybe it is just me, but it doesn't bother me when one of my runs gets obsoleted. Also, Upthorn is exactly right.

It depends of your definition of "secrets". If someone do a run and tell people that he is doing that without posting WIP, is it "secrets"? Also, no matter what an author do, in the end, the movie is publicly available, so there are no "secrets".
Well Phil, how many runs on this site do you know can be improved? Instead of posting about the possible improvements, you are improving the runs yourself. These are what I call secrets, because the improvements are SECRET to everyone but you. Even if the run is going to be made publicly available, the information may be useful to someone else who is also working on the same run improvement at the same time.
Phil wrote:
Personally, 2 and 4 mean the same. Maybe not for you but for some people a TAS is a dedicated work that needs hours and hours of work. Not just a game. It's normal that an author is emotionally attached.
The amount of work is irrelevant. It isn't the author's game. Why wouldn't you just be happy to see a better run?
Phil wrote:
While it may true, I never understand that. We are aiming for perfection. So are you telling me it's impossible? If yes, then we should aim for something else. What's the point to try reaching a goal that is impossible to reach?
I am telling you and everyone else right now. No run will ever be perfect. I don't give a shit what anyone says. If you start throwing around words like "perfect" or "unbeatable" that will kill all motivation for another person to try and improve the run later on.
Phil wrote:
Also, another question, what is the problem that someone do a movie for ego or not? If the movie is good, most people don't care. In fact, I always find it to be a lame excuse to reject a movie. Imo, that's ego doing that.
That hasn't ever happened. It will never happen. If you wanna play for Ego, you are just stalling the progression of the site.

This is an incredibly intriguing idea. Though I suspect a huge problem would be the goal of the run. Shortest movie avi or shortest input length. One way to significantly shorten the input length would be to set pac-man up on one of the long vertical paths when the only remaining pellets are on that path, then simply terminate the input. Pac would continue to eat all the pellets on that path even though no more input is being given.

I am happy you made this thread mmbossman. I hope it will stir up some intelligent conversation, and make people less emotionally attached to their "achievements". I am VERY much against people playing for themselves and not the community. I produce movies for others to enjoy, not to raise my status in the community. The Rules I live by: #1 - Do not keep secrets. People who keep secrets are playing for pride or ego. Keeping secrets just so your run will be better than someone else's when you are done is just foolish and counterproductive. All information should be shared with the community in order to produce the best possible movie, regardless of author. #2 - ENJOY SEEING YOUR MOVIES OBSOLETED. How many people here say that? not very many at all. I enjoy TASes because they push the game to the limit. If someone manages to improve upon a game that I really like, then this is a good thing. There is no reason to get angry. If you are so full of pride that you fear seeing your runs obsoleted, that is just sad. #3 - Never make claims of how good you are, or how perfect your run is. Arrogance is absolutely useless, and it is a fine way to piss off your fellow TASers. Beside, claiming perfection is the EPITOME of pride. #4 - Do not become emotionally attached to your work. It's just a fucking game. If someone beats you to the punch, don't cry about it. I am sure there are more things, but I forgot them. The bottom line is that you should not make movies just to have your name attached to the game or to increase your status. Make the runs for the simple fact that it is fun, challenging, and looks awesome when played back in real time.

I knew that. I was just stating one of the reasons for equipping it.

Pretty sweet run. Voting yes because it satisfies the "any%" category of this game. comicalflop: You shouldn't let this discourage you. If anything, this run will serve as a bar to work off of. Besides, the Donkey Kong JP and Yoshi Valley tricks are old and well known by now, very few people will be surprised by them. The banshee boardwalk trick should have been obvious to most viewers. The only thing about this run that really showed me something new was the Rainbow Road trick. I am not trying to downplay the coolness of this run, but I am trying to say that your 100% run would not have that many shock and awe moments anyway. I think the prestige of your run would be the fact that it is superbly optimized, not so much these "semi-obvious" tricks. I encourage you to continue your run, because it will be a full run. You seem to forget that the other 3 cups are of any importance. Even if you think the tricks in those cups aren't as cool, they should still be included on this site.

He uses ice sword 2. A weaker sword would most likely not inflict enough damage to kill the lavos shell within 2 attacks.

I've watched it. Even though there are noticeable errors, it is still an interesting movie.

Same one. I don't have any concrete evidence that it is improvable, so I didn't restart it. I have been getting horrible luck with enemy spawns, so it has consumed many hours and rerecords trying to get them correct. If my run is going to be improved, it will only happen if someone can get lucky with good enemy placement.

Saturn, I figured you had already thought of that strategy and dismissed it. I was just posting it to make sure. Anyway, Congrats.

Yeah, it is almost done. Just got to kill the zebetites and mother brain. I have been swamped with work lately, so I haven't been able to spend much time on this.

Indeed this is crazy. I thoroughly enjoy seeing this game pushed further to the limit. Voting yes. You mention that Ice Sword is faster than luminaire by ~110 frames. I was thinking this might be a faster strategy for the 2nd lavos battle: 1-luminaire 2-luminaire 3-ice sword 2 4-ice sword 2 5-HyperEther 6-luminaire 7-ice sword 2 Which is 1 turn less than you do. or maybe: 1-luminaire 2-luminaire 3-ice sword 1 4-ice sword 1 5-ice sword 1 6-ice sword 1 7-ice sword 1 8-ice sword 1 for the much shorter animation sequence.

I am pretty sure that it is faster to use continuous walljumps in the rising lava room. I think JXQ does this in his movie. I am almost positive that I will not have enough energy to do a shinespark in the pre-ridley room in my new any% run.

Can you also use the event skipping trick to avoid triggering Marle's escape event when you exit the present-day castle the first time? The exit from the castle is quite close there.
I was thinking of that too. There seems to be a good chance that this scene will be skipable. I will do thorough testing once I reach that point in the run.

I only visit a few item shops throughout the entire run, maybe 3. I will keep this I mind when I visit one though.

Also, remember to play with camera angles in the race with Johnny. You neglected to do that in the previous movie.
I didn't know that it was possible to change the camera angles. The link you provided doesn't have any seeds, so I can't download it. I will surely mess around with the camera angles in the new run, after I learn how :P

I have been working on Metroid I for the past few days, so I haven't really spent much time on Super Metroid. I had beaten the Torizo, then I stopped working on the run. I am also considering starting over, because moozooh has found some small frame savers which would make my run improvable by about 20 frames. I will make a post here when I start working on the run again, which might be some time soon.

The run is almost done, so I won't be posting it in the forum. It should be on the workbench sometime soon. Feel free to rip it apart once it has been submitted. I am sure you will find lots of little things that a non-expert such as myself has overlooked. If you manage to find enough mistakes, I may be persuaded to make another version sometime in the recent future. As it stands right now, I am 32 seconds ahead of zoizite's run. An additional 5-8 seconds will be saved using the faster technique in the statue room.
