I gotta admit this run did bring a smile to my face, especially when Canada lost. Overall it was not very entertaining, and did not show anything impressive. I think it would have been better if you picked a newer version of the game, like 98 for example. An entire game would be much cooler than a 5 point shoot out. It was a difficult decision, but I vote no.

moozooh, he did use the springball in that little test of his. I then produced a successful movie showing the same thing but actually clearing the gap with the springball. JXQ doesn't do that in the published run. I am guessing he knew about it though for his v2 run. You bumped away my last post btw, on page 57 I posted a movie.

I was about to dismiss that as not being possible, but I actually manage to get that to work! very nice find Tonski. I bounced samus a few times before reaching the edge, which I assume is the only way to make the jump possible. I just hope that JXQ also discovered this when he got to this point, it is a decent time saver. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4404/cool.smv

To hero of the day Without watching your run, I would never try to challenge Chrono Trigger Time Attack.Without using your beautiful strategy in most Boss battles until Magus, I couldn't set up this record. I appreciate you.
Thank you inichi, and welcome to TASvideos. I really appreciate this new strategy that you made for your time attack, it is a very clever idea. I am happy that my run could help you in any way.

thanks evilchen, but P.JBoy is correct. I realized that Samus can walljump off the center pillar shortly after my run was published. Samus can walljump without losing momentum in certain situations. This area will constitute the biggest improvements to my current any% run, because I no longer have to bomb across the lake when going towards wrecked ship. Thanks again for the idea though.

Did you read my post? I said I was in favor of having this new run obsolete mine. I was merely stating that Saturn brings up a valid argument too. And no, this game should not have 12 different runs. I think there should be 3 different types of run. 1. new game+, quickest ending, starts from save file. 2. quickest run, clean sram, obsoletes my run. 3. full completion, resurrects chrono, gets best ending possible.

I really don't care if my run is obsoleted. I enjoy seeing a game I love being pushed to the limit, even if that means my name is no longer attached to it. No author should get upset when a run of theirs is beaten, that is the nature of perfection. When this new run is done, it will receive a yes vote from me. But you are wrong about one thing Bag of Magic Food. This run receives a vastly different ending. In fact there are over a dozen different endings in this game depending on when lavos is beaten. Don't attack Saturn because he voiced his opinion. Many games here have multiple runs which each receive different endings. Like I said before, I will vote for this new run to obsolete mine, as long as the quality is up to par.

The quick ending trigger sequence involving the usage of all the beams is well known by many people now, I knew about it a couple years ago after someone posted about it on m2k2. I agree this would make for a great concept run except that Snes9x does not emulate Super Metroid correctly in this one regard, it can be done on zsnes if I recall correctly.

Go for it dude! you might want to consider using the english version, simply because you can accurately compare times to my run. Either way, good luck.

I do not think my low re-record count is very impressive, it really just shows laziness on my part. While the run was made in frame advance, I spammed the turbo buttons to keep the frame testing down to a minumium. This is the only way to approach this game due to it's length. The run took me 6 days to make. If I meticulously frame search through every single dialog, the run would have taken about 1 year to complete. That explains my low re-record count. The aspect of my run that I believe to be impressive, is very unique and low level boss strategies that I myself designed. I am proud of my strategies, the Japanese runner seemed to use many of them until the point where he stops advancing the story and simply levels up. There is no great need to beat his record, it really doesn't matter. His run receives a different ending, and as such it might even be considered a different category. My run goes through the entire "natural" story line, while his cuts out the last portion of the story. Like I said before, I would love to see a new run more than anyone else, but there is little chance anyone will be up for the task.

Yes, reseting will alter the attack pattern, but that seems to be the only way. I have even tried delaying the beginning of a battle to see if the critical hit pattern would change, but it didn't work.

Hell, if anyone wants to start a new run they have my full support. I can almost guarantee no one will work on this game though, it is just too long and tedious. If anyone tries, I can give some pointers and stuff. The only way I will redo the run myself is if I get a lot of free time and I have no other projects to work on.

That is correct, in fact I don't know if I could beat his time by much even if it was 100% frame perfect. The nature of this game is that every battle is fixed, so if you have the right strategy, you can be on par with any TAS. Do not forget that his run is on the Japanese version of the game, the text scrolls MUCH MUCH faster. For those who don't believe me, or haven't watched my TAS, Please Click here and fast forward to 4:03. Watch how much damage lavos' attack does to everyone except magus, it is astronomical! This was after 20 minutes of leveling up too. I am not lying, serious leveling is the only way to defeat lavos, with or without tools.

Unfortunately no, it is impossible to go in at a lower level. All of lavos' attacks are fixed, and cannot be changed. There is almost no luck manipulation in the game at all, every battle is scripted. edit: even my published run had a fair amount of end-game leveling, and you saw how badly lavos destroyed all the characters except for magus.

It wasn't video taped. So either I make a new TAS, or someone else decides to do it. Until then, we have to go by his word. I do believe his strategy to be very sound, and I think that a decent amount of time can be cut from my run. The trade off is the entertainment factor. Does anyone want to watch 40+ minutes of the same battle over and over?

nice video saturn, that surely is faster than letting it grab samus. Is there a reason why the console runners don't do this?

hahaha, sorry to spoil your surprise moozooh. Since you are using the speed booster route anyway, it doesn't really matter too much. I assume that most experts and console runners knew this was possible, but like I said it is totally impractical to use this in a console run.

Yeah, all the metroid games are now getting the attention they deserve. So today I was bored and I manage to escape the Giant Metroid in real time (but with save states) without the speed booster. Of course it ended up taking more time than it would have to simply get drained by the metroid. In a console speed run you have the risk of exiting with the metroid attached, so this trick is basically useless to everyone. movie, for those who are curious

I like what you have shown so far. You are making fast progress, by my calculations you are about 37% of the way done. Keep up the great work, sub 1 hour would be very impressive.

Thats alright evilchen, its not a big deal. I personally like to make every discovery I find available to everyone as early as possible, so that they can use the trick in their run. This way the community as a whole benefits, instead of just the person who finds the trick.

Why do you not mention these things earlier? If you had told us about this trick earlier, all of our runs could have been better. Why hide these timesavers until I discover them on my own?

Thanks Saturn. I always look for the unorthodox way of going through the game, doing things differently than what the standard runs would do. I guess this trick was never realized because it cannot be completed in real time within a timely manner. Like you said, I too have been thinking about taking this path for any future any% runs. The main question in my mind it how long it will take to get that single fireball up into the top area. Taking this path will not use up any power bombs at all, the top part can be taken out with regular bombs. The area with the very powerful side hoppers can be cleared by shortchraged running. The bad part about this path is that it will supply Samus with 1 less powerbomb, but hopefully ridley's drops can compensate for that. If you do happen to make an optimized test of this, I would really appreciate hearing the results, or if you could supply the smv that would be awesome.

Well I just figured out a pretty intense trick that could save 5-10 seconds in the 100% run. This trick would remove 2 door transitions and it would reduce the amount of distance traveled. The problem is that it requires a hefty set up, and I am not sure how long it would take to get that fireball up into the top cubicle in order to perform the trick. I am pretty sure that the fireball has to be a specific one, and I think it may be the fireball from the very bottom :( since each fireball has a different pattern. I shall let the video speak for itself. enjoy!

I just finished reading what Dromiceuis translated. Thanks for your work so far Dromiceius, you have done an excellent job! From what I gathered, his strategies are almost the same as mine up until tyrano lair, with only a couple exceptions. Essentially I could simply redo the last 25% of my run and it would reduce the time drastically. He even uses the same spot that I do in the tyrano lair to level up his characters, except I stop after only a few battles, while he does 77(?) consecutive battles. Once his boss strategies are fully translated, I will start to plan for a new run. I can't promise that I will make a new run though, it will take quite a while to make and I don't know if I have the patience anymore.
