Hot damn! I was planning to delete all my emulators, but I must watch this first. =3 edit: man, nothing like seeing a time attack video to see just how much faster Wario truly can get around with his new dash move, compared to the other Wario Land games. Still may be neat to a Hard Mode run... To go along with this one, and not replace it. That way we can have this super-fast Sonic-speed video as well as a more Puzzle-heavy one which Hard Mode would create. I think they'd both be interesting in different ways. Anyway, great video. =)

Yep... I made that pretty clear in my description. Thanks for reading. Hope you watched the video too. =)

Yeah... no jets in this game. Up to 28 treasures now. Only 20 left. =3 Considering the nature of the game, there aren't as many opportunities to create shortcuts as I wish there was (i.e. by using Wario's transformations in places you normally wouldn't), but I do take them as I can get them...

...or not. =P Gah, I'm an idiot. I have work to do today! Anyway... http://omake.studio-zoe.com/SuperHappy-WL3v2.zip (14/48 treasures - 3000 or so frames faster than previous version) This one I'll go ahead and finish. I probably won't post anymore incomplete versions unless I need advice on something. =3

Heheh.. thanks. But I just discovered some ways of speeding up the transition scenes that I wasn't aware of, thus I should probably start over now anyway. ^^; I may as well take the opportunity to try a run with a bit less dashing and compare the total times... Probably will be a little while before I start work on this again (I'm getting a little tired of these early levels), but I will, honest. =3

UPDATE 8/19/06 So I'm considering finishing an actual decent run of this game sometime in the future. I don't know if anyone remembers, but I published a run that still needed a lot of work some time ago ( http://tasvideos.org/665S.html ) then eventually came to my senses and cancelled it. The Wario series doesn't seem particularly popular at TASVideos, for some reason, but going by the discussion here and the discussion for the original submission, it seems that there's just enough interest for this to maybe be worth completing. =) Don't cease to let me know if you don't agree. For a platform game, Wario Land 3 actually requires quite a bit of strategy and planning for a good TAS, but sadly, its pace is hampered by the worst unskippable transition sequences ever. That's what makes the entertainment factor of this run a bit hard to judge. Here's the first ten stages of an improved run (1000 frames faster than the original run, at this point): http://ohnolookoutitsaraygun.com/superhappy_wl3v2.zip ____________ (original first post:) In the past few days, I made a movie for WL3 which goes up to the point where a bug in the game and/or emulator prevents me from proceeding. It's actually an easy bug to get around; I just need to save and quit, then I'll be able to continue right where I left off and the glitch is gone. It wastes a few frames, but I doubt the glitch will ever be repaired since it's not a huge deal. It's a good stopping point anyway. The hardest thing about this game is ascertaining whether doing the dash will speed you up or slow you down. After several tests, I decided that for the most part, it won't do either, and it's about the same speed as walking. But due to its power to extend your jumps, it's still a little faster to dash through the game. The current video is actually my second run through most of the levels (significantly faster than my first attempt, of course), and now that I'm at a stopping point, I'm deciding whether to start again one more time and try a slightly different approach, or just finish the movie. Is anyone else trying this game? http://omake.studio-zoe.com/SuperHappy-WL3.zip (Rom used: Japan (M2) (C) (!)) - first 14 treasures. 34 remain.

Renegade and Athena need to be mentioned here. Both games have final levels which trap the player in a loop for ALL OF ETERNITY.

Heh... I may have gotten more accustomed to the game by that point, which tends to happen when I make these quickie videos. FYI, my times for Stage 3: 182 183 182 118 186 133 165 177 should all be pretty beatable.

Holy goddamn crap. I redid from the start of CNZ2 to the end of ICZ2. I watch it. It plays fine. I turn off my comp, go to bed, <insert everything else i did here>, come home and watch my movie again. It. Desyncs. On. Marble. Garden. 2. One, how tf did it manage to suddenly change between working and not work overnight? Two, how tf did me re-doing everything after the start of CNZ2 affect MGZ (which is earlier in the game)? I'm gonna have to give up doing this if this goes on. >_<
That's almost exactly what happened to me :( In my case, I think it desynched sometime right before a savestate I started at to record a big chunk of my movie. When I played back the movie from savestates, it worked, but then when I tried palying the entire movie, I discovered it was all a waste. When I reacted, I probably sounded really rude to the people working on Gens in the process, and I apologize for that. But the emulator does need tweaking. =/

Arrgh. Trust me, after the first run through the game, I became fully aware of the problems with this emulator. So this time I only recorded 10-20 seconds of play at a time, stopped and started quite often, replayed the movies often, and backed up the movie file often. I did everything right this time, but I didn't count on the emulator finding a new way to fuck me, is all. I simply have no idea why this happened. Gens needs to be fixed, peroid. I'm not seeing any indication that this emulator is being worked on, though, so this run will probably never be finished. Alas. Yeesh.. been over a day and I'm still pissed about this.

That's not the problem. The problem is the movies of Stages 2 and 3 worked when I began them from save states, but not when I play the entire movie. The problem is Gens is a peice of shit, and I have to make it clear I haven't had a problem like this with FCEU, Snes9x, or even VBA which just had re-recording added a week ago. I'm not going to continue this until someone fixes it or makes a new Genesis emulator.

Just wanted to say I'm interested in the game and I voted yes on your last run. I think the reason why it didn't get published had less to do with quality (I think it got all yes votes) and more to do with the obscurity of the game.
Bisqwit and co. seem to have little time on their hands these days. They've only been publishing Mario games and updates of existing runs lately. But they're nice enough to make all the unpublished movies viewable, so I can't complain. ^_^;
I know this isn't related but is there any chance you would try Alisa Dragoon after this game?
Heh... I remember that game. I dunno if I'd be able to do it, but it'd be interesting to see. --- I updated the WIP. I had free time to blow, and I went on to complete stage 2 and most of stage 3. The third boss is a major hurdle. Its nature makes it REALLY hard to beat it without wasting shots, but I'm going to attempt to do just that. In a while. I have a feeling just this one boss fight will take several hours. ^^; Unfortunately, while I did shave an additional 6-7 seconds off the run, there's nothing really noticeably more impressive in stages 2 and 3. Stage 2 was really a pain. I came across the dreaded problem of things not working in the second attempt the way they did in the first. I had to wait a bit longer at the odd "twisty plant bridge" thing than I did before, but maybe it's because I got there earlier. At the very least I made sure not to go through any section slower than before, but I ultimately couldn't shave off too much time. =| Stage 3 is a bit better, and I did find a better pattern to kill the dragon snake mid-bosses faster. These bosses give me the water spell, which unfortunately is the only way to get past the fire pillers behind them. The water spell is almost completely useless otherwise... in a time-attack anyway. ^^; EDIT: disregard all that. It seems my movie got damaged somehow. Jesus fucking shit Christ, I fucking hate Gens sometimes. =/ That's five fucking hours of work for nothing. Not planning to redo it anytime soon now.

Hey guys. I'm starting on my second play through now. =) Stage 1. About 4-5 seconds faster than the previous version: http://omake.studio-zoe.com/ElVientoPARTTWO-SuperHappy.zip Will probably complete a stage a day or something like that. So far there is one intentional missed shot near the beginning of the movie where I fire shot to affect Annette's movement, so that she can duck under the first biker. She gets knocked back if I don't fire the shot. Not sure why, but that's how it is. The most noticeable improvements are with the midboss (the four cars) and the tank boss. I actually have to redo the last 3rd of the tank boss, though. It desynched toward the end. The boss still died, which is neat. Nevertheless, the desynching probably caused him to die a half-second slower than he should have, and I want THIS movie to be perfectly perfect. Dunno how many people are interested in this game, but I'm doing it. So there. =)

Heh... I was kinda wondering that too. ^^; When I recorded my movie, it chose SGB mode automatically. Speaking of which, I guess I'll go ahead and post mine just for the heck of it. It's not very good and OE has me beat or tied on all the levels, but I have mine completed up to the end of Stage 2, so that could give you times to work toward, or something like that... http://omake.studio-zoe.com/SuperHappy-DK.zip

This is one of my favorite GB games, so I'm looking forward to seeing a full run of this! One thing I'd like to note: The handstand jump will increase your speed a little, and help you through levels that require a lot of horizantal movement like 1-4.

And b) would be faster, but I was never able to pull it off.
Yeah, when I tried this level, the mouse would help me over just in time to jump into the fireball. ^^;

With the exception of Bubsy 3-D, Bubsy was the worst game ever made, but it makes for an entertaining time attack. :) Especially so when you watch it knowing how impossible the game was.

It does get a little over-the-top toward the end. The programmers seemed to be really proud of the giant explosion graphics they managed to create, so even tiny little bullets and bats explode spectacularly. I can see how it'd get in the way. ^^;; It's not quite as obscuring when the game is played regularly. A lot of the game (especially the 4th stage, with all its "puzzle" elements) is more fun to watch if you've played it before, but the same can be said for almost any time attack. I have fond memories of this game. I guess it wasn't very popular, though. ^^;

...or not. I have work to do, yet I still can't stop going back to this. Aiiigh... I completed Level 4, and the rest of the run will be a little easier, since stages 5-7 are pretty short (the last level kinda sucks though ^^;) It'll be submitted eventually. I still don't know what's causing the desynching. I can't get it to stop. So I'll just be doing a bunch of redoing to get this video completed.

Yeah, I have no idea why it's being so tempermental. Either the emulator hates this game or it hates me. May be worth testing it out, so if anyone wants to try adding to the recording from where I left off, feel free. =| It stops right before a really annoying boss, though.. hahaha...

Oh, for Christ's sake. I managed to make it to the middle of the fourth stage, and it was quite difficult to figure out a good strategy for that part of the level, but now when I try to replay the file, it keeps desynching at the third boss, when IT DIDN'T BEFORE. Talk about infuriating. Officially giving up until Genesis emulators are improved... It a spinoff of Earnest Evans, actually =) Annette is his adopted daughter, or something like that, and he shows up in a cutscene. Earnest was kind of a cruddy game, but El Viento wasn't bad. It does have some wonky level design, but it's still pretty playable. Anyway.... Nothing I do works. =( I got the sound settings set to what everyone recommends, and I'm not seeing any indication of other factors which could cause problems. Yet everytime I struggle to get it to record properly, it only desynchs a second later. It's really frustrating 'cause this is the first run I've done which is turning out good, but on the other hand, I shouldn't be spending time on this kind of thing this month anyway. I'll just patiently await another version of Gens.

11/27/05: I'm currently working on an improved run of my El Viento movie Quick WIP Link: http://omake.studio-zoe.com/superhappy-elvientoWIP2.zip Covers Stages 1, 2, and all of 3 except for the boss. (This time for real) Time thus far is 3:53. Original time up to this point was 4:06. Kudos to Jyzero! I don't know what you did, but Gens didn't desynch once since I started work on this again! --- Original message for the now published version 1: --- Well, I'm finally making my first attempt at a serious, submission-quality run: El Viento for the Genesis. It's turning out good so far, but I've hit a wall of endless desynching. I've reached an area where it's desynched five times in a row, and I'm going to have to stop until I either find a way to fix things on my end, or wait for a newer version of Gens. First 2 1/3rd stages, and my CFG file: http://omake.studio-zoe.com/ElViento-superhappy.zip Do give it a look. It's incomplete but what's there is pretty entertaining. El Viento's a good game to do a run with because you get a dash ability that isn't really meant to be used throughout the game, and unlike the dash in games like Megaman, it can be done continuously! If anyone has a suggestion for a change in my configuration, let me know. If it turns out I have no choice but to wait for a new emulator, I'll do that too. ^^;
