I'm planning to attend SGDQ 2017 and as dwangoAC said submissions are coming up soon (3/6 - 3/11). Talking on irc it sounds like MediaMagnet will also be attending. I like dwangoAC's idea of having a TAS review of RTA tricks that were used/failed, though my ideas about how this would be accomplished differ a bit from his. I'm also considering submitting some NES TASes. I would submit as running on emulator as I do not currently have hardware to replay on console. I'd leave an option for hardware replay because I do plan on acquiring some hardware soon, but that would be only for if I get the hardware working and the runs sync. I would note that I am also planning to submit some of my own RTA stuff. Other good ideas are welcome as is more help :)

I presume you won't get banned, though I'm not a forum moderator so I can't really be sure. Maybe someone will make a "prince" run out of spite, but never say never, I'm sure there are tons of examples in the forums of runs that were dropped and picked up years later by someone else. As for me I'm a bit tied up with TASMania and RTA practice for the next Big 20 race

Does the rollover match up with the screen scrolling? If so maybe an RTA runner could use the edge of the screen as a cue. If it depends on other things maybe it is more luck based for RTA.

honestly, just running the skate levels would be more interesting, considering what you can do on the surfing stages. You just ride to the top of the wave and alternate between up and don at the top, and you can just rack up the points. you can very easily max the score counter in rapid time that way. probably on the first level under TAS conditions. playing big wave encounter i maxed the score in around 5 minutes RTA once i got the timing down on that trick. t least thas hoow i remembered it.
I disagree. If you only play the skateboarding levels then you're only playing half of the game. A TAS probably could max out the score pretty swiftly. I'd vote for a 999999 run, but I'm not sure it would be that interesting. I'm sure you would do it on the first stage since nothing is forcing you to end the stage. The score is a 6 digit number, so at 500 points per trick it would take you 2000 tricks to max out the score. I think you remember incorrectly since you'd have to do 6 tricks per second to get it done in 5 min. I did 20 stages RTA yesterday and ended up around 120k. Did you watch round 10? There are still interesting things a tas can do while surfing.

I always liked this button masher. Even though the controls are pretty difficult, some of the animations are funny. Yes vote

Looks like a good run based on what I've seen from White hat's RTA runs. Also great to see people making good use of the TASMania spreadsheet

I spent a little time on Conan once because whitehat and m3ntula were asking. Optimizing movement/spawns is a little tricky. I did discover that you can jump off the right side of the screen instead of climbing though. White-hot was also running Stanley, it did seem like it would make for a good tas

I don't have a specific title in mind, but you may want to check out the spreadsheet from the TASMania project http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18578 I would note that the estimates in that sheet were bad and for RTA purposes, but perhaps a look at TMR's NESMania spreadsheet might help you figure out which ones are actually short. Also a look at any RTA records from speedrun.com might be of use.

Definitely a fun game that people loved as kids. I definitely think you should submit it, especially since i just recently started organizing a tasmania and it doesn't have a published run yet.

@Warepire Thanks. It looks like Cyberball and Eliminator Boat Duel do not have a TASes so i have cleared those. Milon's secret castle does have a TAS, but it was pointed to the punch-out info by mistake. I have now fixed these, thanks for pointing them out. @Dimon12321 Even with having TMR's spreadsheet as a starting place I probably spent at least 8 hours on it already. Compiling that info was probably more tedious than you would think. Samsara was already planning to clean up the NES section of the forums (consolidating threads, etc.). That will help me fill in the 'forum threads', and the 'known WIPs' is just something I haven't started on yet. I figured it was worth posting the main info without some of those details.

The project was motivated by NESMania which only includes licensed games from North America and Europe. I figured the easiest thing would be to use the game list already created for that project, and as a result FDS is not included. I have not looked, but I do imagine FDS also has some interesting games that do not have runs.

Hey everyone, I just started organizing a project I'm calling TASMania and if you're interested I could use your help. TASMania is the quest to publish Tool-Assisted Speed runs for all 714 Nintendo licensed US / PAL game-carts. This project was inspired by TMR's NESMania project, and is fortunate to leverage assets (e.g. the spreadsheet, the games list, goals, ...) and knowledge from it. Hopefully this will be a fun way to motivate people to fill out more of the NES library with tool-assisted runs. Additionally if people are looking for interesting games to TAS this project will be a good resource. There are quite a few interesting NES games that lack runs. Project resources: I have created this spreadsheet for the project: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14mIIGHU4hzK1atRsVgMtwc8hNkUc2Ty48loCNj8O9Bc/edit?usp=sharing I have also set up a discord here: https://discord.gg/jkWAm6k This forum thread may also be a good place for general project discussion, though in-depth discussions about specific games probably belong in the forum thread specific to that game.

Actually the change in the qualifying jump did save a few frames, but the change for the fouls saves nearly a second each time. I made those triple jump improvements as well as a few others and uploaded it here http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/34478926065152211. Overall I saved around 7 seconds, about 4 of which is from triple jump. The other savings is most likely due to smaller optimizations and rng changes particularly in clay pigeon shooting and archery. I was mostly just trying to sync the rest of the run, but those events in particular are highly rng dependent. Some other events like high dive, hurdles, swimming, and horizontal bar I was able to leave untouched. I suggest we replace the current file with this new one I posted. Also can you give me edit permissions to the submission. I'd like to add in a few comments. I'll probably include some info on the changes I made, but mostly I'd like to include some info about what the maximum scores are for each of the events in the submission text.

The change in the qualifying jump may not save frames, but the quicker fouling definitely does. I saved about 92 frames on the first triple jump by pasting in my inputs. It looks like a few frames could be saved by putting delays in the archery sections to get better wind rng. I didn't study the clay pigeon shooting closely, but it looks much better. I would guess that fixing up the triple jump will mean you'll have to redo those ones anyway.

Well done putting this together so fast. This does look much cleaner than your previous submission. The one thing I see that definitely looks like it could be improved is the triple jump. You can see in the wip of day 1 that I posted that i am a little closer to the qualifying distance (may or may not be saving frames), but mainly it is much faster to foul by slowing down significantly near the line and doing a tiny jump. A couple of other ideas that I have not checked (which may or may not have merit): Can you make pole vault faster by slowing at the end, triggering the vault later, or not jumping as high to clear the qualifying height? Can we manipulate the wind to save a few frames in archery? I notice one had the wind 11 against, maybe it would be faster to drop that one and fire the next one instead? I may also try to check a few other minor things, but on the whole I don' think this can be improved by more than a couple of seconds or so. One last thing, I would remove the category, or just call it any%. I'd let a future max score movie worry about a fitting category name.

yeah, it really depends on the event, but a lot of them are dependent on some sort of rng. Some of them, like high dive, can be moved around without sync issues though. I disagree on adding the exhibition events. Personally think a high score run that includes them would be great, but i think to start with we should shoot for a vault run. This means triggering the ending as soon as we can and skipping the exhibition events. Definitely some info should be included in the notes though. My old wip included the exhibition events so I have some good information. Gun firing in particular is sort of bad for entertainment value. By doing well you are awarded more time, and as a result the event drags on. It is a bit interesting that you wrap the score though. My max ended up at 202, though the in-game display wraps back from 200 to 100 and ends up showing 102. Hang gliding is a bit more simple and if you get there quickly and stop as fast as you can you can get a score of 255. I grabbed the inputs from your high dive, and I think they will work ok, though it would be nice to get 10.0 from all four judges, not just for the final score. I started on clay pigeon shooting, and it looks like you just found a spot in the rng you could repeat and just copy/paste the whole thing. Unfortunately you can manipulate the start of each disc and get much more favorable spawns. This is admittedly much more tedious. Also, back you your earlier point, much less sync friendly.

DrD2k9, I spent some time looking at your run and my old wip tonight. I started making some improvements. I've also been trying to stream some of my TAS efforts on twitch. Here is a wip of day 1. You'll notice high dive still syncs, but we should probably use your inputs for 10.0's instead. It will desync after that. Here is the wip: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/download/34223766845058273 Here are some other notes on your movie (more specific notes than i could make earlier today): You may notice that I delay 1 frame on the title screen. The point of this is to give me Korea as the fencing opponent instead of Russia (friendlier AI). You tried to max out triple jump at 19m 19, but from my old wip you can max it out at 21m 01 by starting on the right frame and using angles 49, 49, and 69. I suggest we just hit the qualification distance like in my wip for the run though. It is possible to legit throw the hammer 83m 04. I suggest we either throw the qualification distance or the glitch, whichever is faster. It is possible to hit 6m 62 in the pole vault, but I suggest we just hit the qualification height. your 5290 in canoeing was better than what was in my wip, but again I suggest we take shortcuts here to save time and just make sure to get the point threshold.[/url]

I'm glad you put together a submission, maybe I'll try to jump in and help out. I'll try to check out this run when I get home, but I'm guessing there are some things that are sub-optimal based on the submission text. As I said in the thread I would vote for a run with an entertainment goal, but I doubt it would get the votes. Vault run with straight shortest time would have a better shot. To that end here are some comments: Fencing: my experience is that the CPU comes straight at you. Not sure what's going on here Triple Jump: put the max distance in your submission notes, put the min distance in the movie. Swimming: that butterfly is faster I think, right? High dive: why not always 10's? Hammer throw: I'm surprised the glitch is slower, but if so stick to min distance Pole vault: min heights Canoeing: put the max score in your notes, but do one run to meet the threshold and the other for speed (hopefully can skip some reverse gates) Archery: go for min scores Hurdles: as kung knut pointed out you can jump off the hurdles (something I didn't notice until after my old wip), I wonder if it would save time Horizontal bar: final score is in increments of 1.1 so 9.9 would be the max. Only improvement might be if you could somehow manipulate the finish to come earlier.

Just a proposal here, but maybe a good way to lay out the categories would be like this: Any% (this would be the current glitched movie) Any% NMG (this yet unmade movie with L+R and scroll lock disallowed) Any% NMG no Wrong Warps (this would fit Arc's current WIP) Movies for 100% or 100% all keys may be worth considering, but may not be much more interesting than the three above. May be easier to have that argument later if someone tries to submit one.

I understand the wrong warp argument from PresJPolk, but I actually disagree even for RTA. For TAS I think it should definitely be allowed. I'm all for having a category where you specifically skip this trick though. My argument is that it is very much the same as the encounter skips we do now. In that trick we hit an enemy and a force encounter at the same time to get the game to put us in the wrong encounter, in this one we exit an encounter headed the wrong direction to get the game to put us on the wrong tile. I feel like these two are on the same level of broken, but one is more intuitive, easier, and more well known.

I have sort of a good news/bad news for this movie (which I'm very excited about by the way, good work). Saver (aka CrystalSaver) recently found a fairy glitch to skip force encounter tiles. PresJPolk explains it here https://www.twitch.tv/presjpolk/v/88313660 Basically you walk in, cast fairy, tap left until the fairy disappears, then move right to exit the other side. This seems quite similar to the famous Zelda screen wrap technique

Hey Aglar, with big 20 practice still going on it probably isn't a huge surprise that a new time save for this was found. I'm not sure if it will be allowed for the race since the rules tend to discourage using controller 2. Runner themotherbrain86 found that if he held B when going in the door to dracula he would just fly away and you don't need to fight him at all. As it turns out he had is B button mapped to both controllers. I'm not sure if there are other places in the run where controller 2 might influence things, but it might be worth trying some other experiments as well.

No, I never submitted it. From the feedback I got when I posted it it seems it was too long and boring and the goal was a bit nebulous. With the whole vault tier that exists now I might redo it and shoot for a vault run with a shortest time. Unfortunately this means I wouldn't be showing off all of the max scores/heights/distances, or the hang gliding and gun firing events. I could mention that stuff in the notes though. I think there were probably very few like us that have fond memories of this as a kid. With that in mind I don't think your option "B" will be entertaining enough or have a clear enough goal for the voters/judges. For example maxing out the height in the pole vault takes quite a few jumps so it would be pretty repetative. I think the best option is "A". Go for vault. The goal is clear this way, it has to be day 8 since there is a proper ending after that. I should also write down that I think there is a better hurdles strat than what I did before, I now realize you can jump off the top of the hurdles. I would like to see this at some point though. It would be nice to dig in to the horizontal bar a little more and find a good RTA strat.
