I'm going for the fastest time. There's always lots of neat stuff you have to skip in a speedrun. I see no reason why I should save the animals yet skip mini-boss fights. Also, it's been done before in Samus Aran's run. Whenever possible I try to make my run unique.

creaothceann, I think the two scenarios you mentioned are close to frame-perfect. There may be room for improvement but not in the ways you mentioned. I don't kill enemies that are not in my way because I'm a minimalist. I'm doing this run for pure speed and nothing more. I hit the spikes in Kraid's Lair for show but have since redone the battle. I ended up needing the energy.

I spent several hours working on Kraid to save 1/5 of a second. I don't think this can be done any faster and I'm so glad to have him out of the way. I finally have the speed booster. Will post an smv of my progress once I defeat Phantoon. At the rate I'm going this may take a while :O/ Expect lots of new maneuvers and look forward to the Phantoon battle.

If I jump early and fire the rockets early then I'm losing speed while in the air. I'll be getting to the door later. This is the speed order of various maneuvers. Running while pumping arms Running Mid-air after a jump Mid-air + duck, which converts to mockball I only mockball if the frames gained by the maneuver are greater than the frames I would save by running faster.

Enemy knockback is rarely of any significance due to the new speed Samus has when pumping her arms. In some situations you save a lot of time, in others you only gain a frame or two. In many situations the knockback actually slows you down. I've tested every situation and have decided the best way to go. As it is my run doesn't allow for additional knockbacks. If I lose any more health I will trigger the ominous low-health warning sound before I reach the mini-kraid on my way down to Crateria. If this happens the mini-kraid will give me health instead of 5 super missiles. I need the super missiles.

Well so far everything is pretty straightforward. If you noticed I skipped the charge beam. This is a new idea I just came up with tonight. I believe I won't be needing it until I come back to the charge beam room with a super bomb. To answer your question, I've got absolutely everything planned out up until Maridia. Once I hit Maridia the run will get very very difficult. EDIT: Anyone see any room for improvement? I'd hate to continue recording if anyone knows a faster way to do something. I'd rather go back and change my error now.

Sorry for the lack of updates, been very busy. Haven't worked on the run since my last post. Well, I had some time tonight. Made all this progress in a couple of hours, I hope everyone enjoys this :O) http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/24/MF_M3_Kraid.smv

I thought I was 1-2 frames away in the US version but I was getting stuck far into the door in the PAL version. I don't see anyone creating the additional 5+ frames needed for the US escape.

Thread recap: Run will be performed with US version, Samus runs very fast when you pump her arms, and I'm at the first set of super missiles. I have a LONG way to go. Expect wonderful things :O)

Well, honestly I'd love to do a 'legit' console run but I don't have a console or a vcr. I'd do a 'legit' emulator run but who would believe it? Emulator speedruns are all about ingenuity and creativity. This is what I enjoy most about playing games. I like to find new ways of doing things that are better than before. My main purpose for this speedrun is to show what is possible and hopefully inspire console speedrunners. Red Scarlet's 55 minute 100% run will be easily beaten once my emulator run is released. Bypassing the bomb Torizo and one-rounding Phantoon are tricks easily performed on the console. That's saving over a minute thirty right there. I do know that some people out there will never appreciate the runs we do here but that is their loss... UPDATE: It seems you do not run faster in the PAL version. The door in the bomb room must be set to close after a certain number of frames. You can make it through that door because there are less fps. You don't run faster, the door closes slower. Also, as I had predicted the ten less fps causes you to have less control of Samus. Having fewer frames as input slows you down. I could not come close to the escape time I produced in the US version. I've decided that switching versions isn't worth the bomb room alone. I will probably make up most of the time saved in that room by having the extra frames for input. I'll continue my current run under the 'more legit' US version. This is probably all for the best, 50fps seemed a little choppy to me anyway.

I believe the gap from missiles to the door right before wave beam could be cleared in the PAL version. I was 1-2 frames away from clearing this gap in the US version and I have been dreaming of showing this to everyone. The horizontal speed gain from the PAL version may also translate to vertical speed, however, and if you fall faster than in the US version the gap would be just as hard. I will save my other thoughts as they should be seen, not read :O)

PAL version allows me to skip the bomb Torizo. I can think of a few other tricks in this version that will save time as well. There's no telling how much faster this version of the game will be due to flukes but it seems the version switch flat out gives a 10% speed boost. This, coupled with the exploit I've found, will allow me to run 20% faster than previous speedrunners. It's not that the playback is faster feitclub, Samus is faster! This, coupled with a smaller avi size, is a good reason to start my recording over in the European version. CONS: Less control of Samus - The PAL version is 10fps slower. This means that I have less frames to work with in the same amount of time. Samus may run faster but a maneuver requiring a certain number of frames would be inherently slower in the PAL version. There is also the possibility that I can't do tricks in the PAL version that I could do in the US version. Run validity - It may be the case that serious speedrunners frown on this version of the game. I want my run to gain respect. If people think my fast completion time is only due to the European version of the game then I've wasted my time. Lost time - I'll have to start over! But I've done it so many times already, it shouldn't take me long to get back to where I'm at now. If I were to start over now is the time. I'll start recording a PAL run tonight just for the heck of it. I'll make my decision tomorrow after a good night sleep and perhaps some more enlightening comments from you wonderful members of this board :O)

How does everyone feel about me starting this run over with the European version? I've been doing some testing and there is so much more possible with this version of the game. I don't think any other speedruns have been recorded with this version so I would be deviating from the norm. I do want to beat the game in the lowest completion time possible for a 100% run. This involves using an emulator, using glitches, and perhaps even the fastest version of the game. The European version would produce an insane looking run. The speed of the game would be overwhelming and the smv would be fun to watch. Feedback? I don't want to record any more on my old run until I've made this decision. On a side note, the European version has convinced me that you can't escape the bomb room in the US version. I can now sleep well at night.

Frame advance (along with the frame count) is basically required to get the times I've gotten. I have it bound as a button on my control. It's that useful! I try to do every maneuver frame-perfect. Walker Boh, I do more than bomb jumping. If you watch my smv closely you will see all sorts of strange things. In Ridley's room I do a 'corner jump'. This is basically using a glitch to jump while in mid-air. I also do a bomb-kneel-bomb jump which I find cool and useful in certain portions of the game. I will continue to do things like this as opposed to standing still or bomb jumps already done by Teri and others. You guys like the morph ball maneuver I do twice when heading to the Brinstar elevator? One of my favorites :O)

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone. Yes, there are many modifications I've made. Some are apparent and some not so apparent. For instance if you press fire the emulator catches your button press at slightly different frames. So if you take the bomb chozo as an example you will notice I've killed him a lot faster than anyone else. This is because I painstakingly re-recorded until every shot came out at the earliest possible frame. You can save 3+ frames a shot if you do this. I've done these types of things for every aspect of the run. I even count frames between all of my wall jumps to maximize my climbing speed. I think my favorite maneuver is the one I execute right at the end. I use a crumble block pull to fall to the missiles faster. This allows me to jump up and out without having to drop a bomb. I've got a million more tricks like this and I will post updated smv files on a regular basis. I'm always looking for feedback and I'd like to be told ASAP if something can be done faster. Path suggestions are also appreciated.

Mockball is as fast or slower than normal running speed. I did a quick calculation and figured my new way of running is exactly 10% faster over an extended period of time. May be even faster if measured over a short distance. Also, this method works with the speed booster and you go REALLY fast. I won't switch to the European version to escape the bomb room, though. You guys like the other tricks? I'm very proud of the mockball room, tons of new stuff in that one room.

Oh yes, it's finally here. My progress so far. I'm anxious to see if anyone can solve my dilema. I'm hesitant to record further into the run in case a solution is found! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/23/MF_metroid3.smv

When I submit my smv watch it and find out! You should be looking for something nobody has ever done before yet still isn't saving time. It should pop right out at you. I'm so close (perhaps even a frame more will do it) but I've decided it's impossible given everything I currently know. I need people to test everything and see if there is a way. Cross your fingers guys, in 1.5 hours I find out if I'm back online at home. If you don't hear from me in a few more hours then I'm still not online :'O( BTW, I'm currently at the super missile/mockball room in Brinstar and 45 seconds ahead of Samus Aran's 100% run LOL :O) 13.5 seconds ahead of Teri and there will be no further comparisons due to our diverging paths.

First off I'm probably regaining internet access tomorrow. I will post the smv of my current progress ASAP. Second, I'd like to request that I be the one who creates the avi. It will conform to whatever specifications bisqwit requires. I'm very good at encoding avi files and I feel I'd be the best one to do it. Third, I could use all the help I can get. There is something I've been trying to pull off for hours and hours. If a few people would like to have a crack at it for my behalf I'd appreciate it. Fourth, I will definitely break 40 minutes for the in-game time so the avi should be under an hour.

10+ seconds ahead of Teri @ bombs and wishing I had an internet connection. I'm not saying that I could personally do 20 minutes guys, I'm saying that I'm sure there are things even I'm overlooking and at some point in the future this will probably be possible. There has to be some major glitch we have all overlooked. I'm estimating that I could personally do ~22 or 23 minutes on an any% run. For now we'll see how fast my 100% run is :O)

I will look into ways of getting this smv posted on the net. I may be able to use my girlfriend's computer but she is out of town until Sunday. I can't put it on a disk and upload it here at work because I work in a bank and I'd be instantly fired if I uploaded data.
I also wonder what insane thing you are trying to do.
Trust me, it's so insane you will wonder why I ever tried in the first place ;O) This one thing alone would save more time than Teri needed to have a 26min run. I don't know how much I can contribute to the Super Metroid community but I have hopes that a sub 20 minute any% run will be possible some day.

I'm exactly 6 seconds ahead of Teri @ first set of missiles. I'm currently working on something so insane that many of you might explode. I haven't been able to pull it off yet and it may not be possible but I'm going to work on it a few more hours. I'm damn close and won't give up just yet.

Hey guys, my housemate set up a phone line in my house without letting anyone else know about it. He installed the phone on our dsl line and this is why I don't have a connection... I don't know when this problem will be fixed but I'm still without internet access at home. I'm anxious to post my smv file, will do so ASAP.
