I replied. I said I'd release .smv or .zmv files of whatever segments of my run people request.

Movie won't play in the version I'm using. Also, I found a savestate online. Can't do what I was thinking of doing :O( Thanks anyway.

If someone can post a savestate (zsnes or snes9x) anywhere after the defeat of Motherbrain I'd really appreciate it.

Hey, if anyone could code some sort of tool or find some sort of process to splice zmv's I'd be willing to have a look at it. BTW, I've made it back to my ship in under 14 minutes. This means that I've already shaved off as much time against her run as the previous record and I've still got a long way to go. More good news is that I may not have to refuel at my ship. I've done some tests and I think I can make it to the next energy tank with exactly 1 health :O)

So you care more about how it is presented than the content? I'm going through the game no different than any other emulated run author. In fact I'm not even using half of the tools I'm seeing used here. All I'm using is savestates and slow-mo when it is absolutely necessary. I understand what this site is about and I regretfully accept that my vid won't be posted here. I was, however, hoping that I'd get some valid advice on how to improve my run. Choosing zsnes was a decision I made a very long time ago and now it appears that this decision was wrong. I can't start over now, though, so if anyone has any advice relating to glitches/tricks in this game I'll use them and present them in the format I'm stuck with. I'm fine with someone else taking all the tricks from my vid and producing a better speedrun than my own.

Guys, drop the re-record feature. I know it is the better option but it is too late. I've put in way too much time and I'm not going to start over again. My schedule is getting increasingly busy and I'm doing my best just to finish this thing. Sorry :O( As for editing the avi, I'll again say just wait and see what I do with this. I know editing like the back of my hand. There is a large audience here who really wants the feel of the original game to be intact but I feel there is a larger audience out there who would appreciate what I'm doing more. I'm also strapped for hard drive space and honestly don't think I can hold 2+ hours of HQ avi on my two drives. If I didn't edit out all the waiting in this game I'd have to make quality sacrifices. nitsuja, I'll make demos of whatever tricks you want. In fact I'll even show how some of the seemingly hard tricks can be done with little effort in a legit console run. I'll also create a walkthrough of every trick in the game and will explain them all. BTW, can anyone here clear the gap leading to Kraid's lair without wall jumping? Just a tease :O)

Geeze people, just because my vid isn't going to be just like every other speedrun vid ever made doesn't mean you have to freak out! Just wait and see how it turns out before you start bashing it. I'm going through all this trouble because I think the end product will be better than a simple copy from smv to avi. Yes, my vid will feel different. That's what I want, though. Not the same thing done over and over.

I've been waiting over a year for a zmv->avi export feature. Although zsnes is the best emulator imho its development is slow. I'm operating under the assumption that a re-record feature in zsnes will never come because there are still some synchonization issues that have persisted for years now.

I think editing the avi is a bad, BAD idea. I can't image why someone would prefer it to a non-edited avi or the zmv/smv. It's not like the waits are very long in this game.
About 50% of the game is waiting. That means I can cut the avi length in half. I also want to have music playing with the run. I can't do that with an smv. If you want it to seem real and impressive then why are you even watching emulated runs? They are so far from the feeling you are wanting. I chose not to record with snes9x because I feel zsnes is a better emulator.
or maybe I misunderstand and you actually mean you are using ZSNES for no good reason despite the fact that it has no re-recording? It sounded to me like you just said you're not using ZSNES because you need re-records and frame advance.
I don't need re-records if I'm just releasing an avi. I feel zsnes produces a much better quality picture than snes9x and I want my avi to look nice. And no matter how good of an argument you guys have I can't just start over. I've put in too much time already. I can't release an smv and I'm not going to release a whole bunch of zmv files either. If you have a bad internet connection then maybe my editing will reduce the runtime enough to where you can still download it. I'll be release low/med/high quality vids and everyone should be able to download the low quality. Thanks for the input guys but avi it is...

BlackMagic: You compare speed by looking at the completion time. I know it won't be posted on this site, I'm only here for constructive advice on my run. I have people who will host this vid. OmnipotentEntity: ZSNES doesn't have a re-record. This means that unless you do your run in one go you will have multiple movie files. Imagine how many movie files there would be for a run like this if I'm trying to perfect every frame... As for the avi being suspicious, are you serious? There are people hex-editing their runs here. What in the world could I be doing that even comes close to that? The run will be legit, you'll be able to tell this by looking at the avi length and comparing it to the completion time. They will be ~equal. All the tricks in the vid will be reproducible and if nobody else can do them I'll post demos of them in whatever format you wish. I'd say EVERY emulated run is heavily suspicious, you've just got to have faith and enjoy the production.

There isn't much need for inverse walljumping, is there BoltR? It's actually better to spread your wall jumps apart instead of doing them every few frames. I've seen this mistake made by other speedrunners and I'm guessing the assumption is that the frequency of the walljumps translates to speed. This isn't the case :O( I can think of a few very specific cases where this move would be nice, though. How do ya do it? Walker Boh, I'm not going to bomb jump during the long waits in the game. I stand still so that when I produce my avi I can edit out all of those uneventful frames. The end result is that you get to see the run without all the waiting. BTW everyone, I just figured out an insane way to get through a room in the Wrecked Ship. Saves 5+ seconds. I'm so excited :O)

I thought I'd start my own topic since the other one is so bloated. I'm working on a speedrun through Super Metroid with 100% items collected. I'd love input. I'm mainly interested in glitches and request that if you know a glitch post it. I don't care how obscure it is, even if it hasn't been of use to anyone else I may find a use for it. Post links to glitch lists/faqs as well! If you are the originator of the glitch you'll get credit in my movie. Of course I'll take other advice as well pertaining to optimal routes, tricks, etc. I'll keep an updated list of useful glitches in this post so that it can be used to avoid reposts. Here's my list which will be updated when I remember more glitches or when others post them. 1) Mockball 2) Enemy knockback 3) Crystal Flash -> kneel in tunnel 4) Kraid quickest kill (my trick :OP) 5) Phantoon quick kill (my trick :OP) 6) Crocomire quick kill (with plasma) 7) Draygon blue suit 8) Morph ball through enemies 9) Blue suit while walking 10) Freeze enemy -> go through ceiling 11) Fall through crumble block 12) Waterball (my trick :OP) 13) Murder beam 14) Platform yank (my trick :OP) 15) Pause during energy recharge

Ok, I've killed Kraid and have the speed booster. It would be silly to not do these things first. The wrecked ship requires the speed booster for certain items. When I say I'm back at my ship in 15 minutes I'm talking about in-game time, not avi length. Red Scarlet saves in her ship and her time is 20 minutes. My route is similar and I'm estimating that if our routes were the same I'd be five minutes faster. Forget all this estimation talk, I know I'll have a new record time for 100% completion and let's just wait and see what it will be. I'm currently leaving the wrecked ship and heading toward my own ship, if anyone has any suggestions submit them quick :O)

Highness: I only have three energy tanks and almost no items, crystal flash is out of the question. Also, the move takes so long to perform... Bag of Magic Food: I'm flying off of enemies for extra speed and have performed quite a number of shinesparks. I haven't come up with many new moves. It's mainly the new tricks I've found that save time. These would involve clearing a gap nobody else has, opening doors a certain way to keep momentum, shinesparking in rooms nobody else has, etc. BoltR: I am taking an entirely different path than Jecy. My current route is somewhat similar to Red Scarlet's. Believe me, I AM manipulating enemies for items. Way more so than Jecy. I'm refilling in my ship because my route gets me there with under 50 health and no items. I'd have to kill a lot of enemies not in my path and wait a lot of time for something I can get at my ship in a few seconds. In the end there is no other choice. Highness: You can get some health from Phantoon but you use it up very quickly. Even after grabbing the e-tank in the Wrecked Ship you run through all your health before you reach your own ship. Xerophyte: Yes, that's my vid. I also have another one that showcases my tricks in Q3 even better. Search for "Cosmodic" on that site you linked - www.own-age.com. BoltR: Why is this route terrible?

I've defeated Phantoon and have perfected a few rooms after him. I'm currently having speedrunners-block and just can't figure out a solution to a problem I'm having. I have exactly enough health to do one trick or another. I can't do both without slowing down to gain health. I haven't slowed down for item collection so far and I'm not willing to start quite yet. I believe a solution does exist but will require much thought and insane timing. Anyway, I've recorded further than this in previous runs and basically have my path planned out back to my ship where I will refuel. I'm not certain but I believe I'll be at my ship in under 15 minutes (the Chozo statue in the wrecked ship is a large waste of time). That means I'm ~5 minutes ahead of Red Scarlet's run with ~2/3 of the run to go. A very rough estimate would be just under 40 minutes for the completion time of my run. I will, however, be accelerating my lead on this run when I collect more items. I'm currently hindered by my low health. More energy tanks will allow me to do so much more than I'm currently capable of.

I have not yet decided whether I'm going to use the murder beam. This is the one glitch where I think I'm going to say no. It looks horrible. I'll only use it if it makes a difference when the seconds are rounded to minutes. I may even find a faster way to beat mother brain, too...

It's not pointless. I've done projects where I shared my work and took input. The net result is that when the end product comes out most everyone has already seen the segments and is not that impressed. When I spend this much time on something I want EVERYONE to enjoy it fully. That's the only reason I trick out games. I'm doing this run to show what I can come up with by myself and I want it to entertain you. You may say I've copied some tricks from others (which I have), but most of my tricks are my own. I started recording this run with spike/enemy knockback many months before this was ever revealed on the net. I'll give credit in my vid to the author of every trick that isn't mine. By the way, I am open to routes/bugs/advice. PLEASE SEND ME ADVICE!!! You can keep it anonymous by emailing me or post it here. You won't find out if your advice is used until the release and you'll of course get full credit in the vid. This will be much more than your name mentioned in the credits. You'll have to wait and see how I implement this :O) I'm aiming for fastest in-game-time. Not that it will ever occur but if I have to use the equipment menu 3 times to save a second I will. I want that final time in minutes to be the lowest it possibly can be. You will eventually see why the actual play time of the vid is irrelevant. Cheers and thanks for the support.

Zurreco, it takes Jecy ~36 seconds to beat Phantoon. I beat him in UNDER FOUR. That's over half a minute right there and I've got another 30 seconds of improvement in the wrecked ship also. There is your minute in just one small segment of the game. Of course I'll prove it, but only when the run is finished :O) feitclub, I'd rather keep all my tricks secret until the big release :O)

It's not so much how long this run is. The problem is that I keep starting it over because I later figure out some trick that makes the run faster. I've restarted the whole run 4 times now. This has been an ongoing project for many many months. I only have a few minutes every day but the run is slowly coming together. I do something different in almost every room of the game so expect some entertainment. Also, I hope nobody else releases a run that has tricks I haven't implemented. I don't want to have to keep starting this over!

I'd say even Teri's run can be improved by 60+ seconds :O) Jecy's can be improved by well over five minutes. I'm working hard on my run now guys, had to backtrack four minutes just to re-do a room and save 2 seconds. I'm that dedicated...

I just figured out a way to save seven seconds in one room and two seconds in the next (compared to Teri's run)! Applies to all types of runs. I'm very excited about this :O)

If you'll note I did say "five+ minutes faster". I'm not going to promise something I can't do. I KNOW I can best his time by five minutes. That is the minimum. Let's all wait and see what I can do. I'm honestly trying to break 40 minutes but I have no clue if it is possible. My escape from the space colony is faster than Teri's by a relatively large amount of time, if it is really that important. I must have spent an entire day on the escape. Worked for every hundredth of a second - as I'm doing with every room...

I'm using Jecy's 47 minute run as a benchmark. Yes, "stuff can add up quickly". Have you seen his run, though? His run is 8 minutes faster than the current non-emulated record and you are telling me shaving off another 5 minutes is not tough? BoltR, you think screwing around/saving the animals is five minutes? No no no... You think I can improve the run another 15 minutes? Do you realize that is within five minutes of the any% run? Come on now, that's expecting too much. Thanks for the heads up on the zsnes info, though. I don't care what emulators are accepted here, I have many people who will host my vid. I don't see why one emulator is accepted over another when the game physics are the same... BTW, when I say I have things that have never been seen in a SM speedrun I'm not just refering to the actual gameplay. You'll have to wait and see the vid to understand how my vid will be different.

For those interested, I'm producing a 100% run. It will be significantly faster than the current record (five+ minutes faster). It will also have a few useful tricks that will easily aid an any-percent run. I'm at Phantoon if that gives any idea as to how much more I have to do. Expect things you've never seen in a Super Metroid speedrun.
