The main problem with skipping the Slingshot is the switch that releases Bombchus in Spirit.
For Deku, you could save five seconds if you were able to do a savewarp in the slingshot room. =/
Otherwise, it's pretty much the same route, except you do Acryte's trick on the first basement level: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYU7g9NxDH0
The GBT vid is awesome. I've come up with a list of possible improvements which I can post later.
It's hard to say. Luckily though, the mask isn't far from the Twinmold battle, so you can try it with and without the mask to compare if necessary.
So, this is what you have to consider:
* Saved: Lens of Truth + following Darmani to grave + Song of Healing cutscene + Goron Race (I'd estimate 5-8 mins. total)
* Slightly slower Swamp Cruise skip
* Slower travel--no 60mph rolling
* No Gilded Sword --> Use Deku Sticks? (2 dmg/hit as opposed to 3; also, supply/funds issues?) Razor Sword? (100 hits enough for entire run?) Could use sword/stick jump attacks for 4 dmg/hit, but not with arrows.
* Traveling up Snowhead - more time/explosives; supply/funds issues
There's that cliff wall opposite the northern mountains with the inscribed melody and Skull Kid drawing. With a bit of luck manipulation, you could get 60 (3x20) rupees every time. Also, one of the Pirate's Fortress chambers (I don't know if it's the one skipped) has a chest containing a silver rupee (100).
If you're concerned about imprecise movement (and I definitely feel you since I test things on emulator quite a bit), there's the option of buying an N64->USB cable. Acryte has some info.
We're also skipping the Silver Gauntlets. The bomb flowers in King Dodongo's chamber cannot be picked up without a strength upgrade.
So, getting the bomb bag takes something around 2'. Getting the Silver Gauntlets (beginning from the bombchu room in Spirit) takes nearly 4'. We also save 30" from skipping Bombchu Bowling.
You can use quick spins for Odolwa (in fact, they're actually faster than Goron punches by a few seconds) and regular arrows for Goht. No Goron Mask needed.
Also, I don't see how "jungle warrior" implies being African.
Anyone willing to re-encode a high-quality version of Guano's OoT TAS (whatever is the maximum quality such that the run can fit on one DVD)? I'd highly appreciate it...
"As a kid in the shadow temple."
Since when?
Also, even if he had the time to pick up those hearts, you'd have to consider whether the extra hearts would have lengthened the time needed to do a deathwarp later in the run.
Isn't the metal cap entrance inside one of the levels? Maybe that would combine well.
Yeah, the entrance to the Metal Cap Cavern is inside Hazy Maze Cave, but you can't get a star on the way there (except for the 100 coin star, which is combined with another star anyway). So I don't know.
I'll stop here with the off-topic discussion. Sorry about that.
It would still be 100 because the secret slides aren't done at the same time, if you've been keeping up with the WIPs. =)
I know, and I realized this when I was shutting down my computer last night. I'm dead serious. >_>
So you'll have to find some other way to merge two stars into a single chapter, but I gave the basic idea.
SM64 can be split up into 99 chapters rather easily.
Let's say you want a chapter for each star. That's 120 chapters.
However, the 100 coin stars are always collected with another star, so that eliminates 15 chapters, bringing the total down to 105.
Next, take the three stars from Toads around the castle, and combine each with the nearest star. That gets rid of three more chapters, bringing the total down to 102.
Combine each of the two stars from MIPS with the nearest star, and you'll have 100.
Now, merge the two Secret Slide stars into one chapter, and you've got yourself 99.
Of course, each Bowser battle and switch palace will be included with the corresponding red coin stars.
The introduction can be included with the first star (Secret Aquarium), while the ending can be included with the last star (red coins in Bowser 3).
OmnipotentEntity is correct. I think you can assume that all damage taken in the run was done to save time.
I don't want to revive the speed vs. entertainment debate here after TSA's comments, but I, too, do not believe in sacrificing speed for entertainment. There are a lot of places to show yourself in a long run like this, and I believe that you don't have to expend time, even in minute amounts, to do it.
Here's how one can split up the OoT run:
Chapter 1: Introduction
Chapter 2: Pre-Deku Tree stuff - Link's house to entering Deku Tree
Chapter 3: Deku Tree - enter Deku Tree to exiting blue portal
Chapter 4: Kokiri's Emerald and Fairy Ocarina cutscenes
Chapter 5: Hyrule Field, Cucco boost
Chapter 6: Enter Haunted Wasteland to entering Spirit
Chapter 7: Learn Requiem + long Silver Gauntlets dialogue
Chapter 8: Spirit - Begin at crawlspace
Chapter 9: Start segment 2
etc.
As you can see, I try to put the unavoidable cutscenes/dialogues at the ends of each chapter so that they could be skipped over easily.
If anyone is actually up for doing this, I can easily come up with the rest.
FODA, that's a really good idea, and I'd love to see it.
Something similar for the finished OoT run would be nice too. Anyone up for it? It could be split up so that there's a separate chapter for each dungeon.
I'd like to see each run in its best possible quality, since DVD-RW's are cheap these days. Especially for the long speedruns. The short ones could be combined all on one disk, as HG said.
The other request I find really irksome is asking Guano to pick up more hearts to get rid of the "low health" beeping sound. And this one certainly has been made--by multiple people, in fact.
Everyone finds the continuous beeping annoying. Because we still cannot record resets with Mupen, we are forced to do deathwarps--and the lower the health, the less time a deathwarp takes.
Even if Mupen's technical limitations were resolved by the time of the next run, unneeded hearts would only be picked up when doing so doesn't waste ANY time--and by that, I mean zero frames wasted.
There is a pretty good definition of what constitutes 100% on SDA.
I never memorized it due to my lack of interest, but it goes something like this:
* All inventory, equipment, and quest items (so that includes BGS, Lens of Truth, all bottles, etc.)
* Have to get Epona
* Dungeon maps/compasses/navigational aids not necessary
The game's programmers assumed that the only way to enter Shadow was by playing the Nocturne. You can only learn the Nocturne after earning the Forest, Fire, and Water Medallions. Hence, the game only checks for the last two medallions to determine whether the player has awakened all six Sages.
I keep forgetting to bring this up but backwalking is not Links fastest form of movement, the fastest way to move is to switch between the sword and an item that can be equiped and unequipped during backwalking.
Talked to Acryte about this a month ago:
(23:48:17) mwl: For example, the deku stick and sword alternating trick during backruns.
(23:48:26) mwl: He just said he didn't want to do it 'cause it took too much time to get right
(23:49:03) Acryte: nah that turned out to save only 2-3 frames and only when you do it at the beginning. Doing it in between the running doesn't appear to hae any difference at all
(23:49:08) Acryte: but that's ok
(23:49:16) Acryte: it would look insnbe though
(23:49:20) Acryte: insane*
(23:49:34) mwl: how frequently could you pull off that trick?
(23:49:46) mwl: I got it in 1 out of every 15 tries or so after a few mins. of practice
(23:50:30) Acryte: which one the quickswap?
(23:50:33) mwl: yeah
(23:50:42) Acryte: hmmm just a sec I got a video
(23:50:55) Acryte: that will show my ability more than an estimate
(23:51:41) Acryte: I get like 9 or so before I usually mess up
(23:51:41) mwl: Seriously?
(23:51:46) Acryte: nah it's easy
(23:51:51) Acryte: once you get the first 2
(23:51:57) Acryte: you get a rhythm going
