Landstalker was one of my favorite games as a kid.. Then my cart got corrupted... But yeah, it's long. Incredibly long, with many boring parts and some backtracking and very low chances for sequence breaking. Lots of interesting stuff could be done by the proper manipulation of enemies to be used as platforms, though, which is probably the number 1 reason for picking up gobs of heart containers.

I can't help but notice that you don't jump in the loops.

I'll be honest, I'm not too thrilled with this run now that others have done these three levels better. I mean, it's only three levels in maybe a minute of actual play, and that doesn't include the absurdly large end-of-level bonuses that accumulate. It doesn't really compare to SMB because SMB is many times longer and more interesting even on the shortest possible path.

Subtitles for level names = Yes please. I'm not sure what else would absolutely need subtitles, though.

Test A desynced for me, but test B worked. You take entirely too long choosing your settings, entering your name, and selecting a difficulty. Remember; Frame advance is your friend. Also, just because you don't see a cursor doesn't mean you can't do things with it. For example, this is the first frame you can move the cursor: From here, you can hit left one frame, up the next frame, and C the following frame to select the default name (faster than "A," in fact, and more aesthetically pleasing to see a real name there). Also, you can choose the difficulty in six frames: right, nothing, right, nothing, right, C. Note the cursor looks like it's highlighting "hard" when you do this, but you really do select Ouch! In your vid you take at least five times as long to do these things. As for the first fight, I think it's possible do it without healing, by not spreading out the Force so much that anyone gets surrounded.

Wait a second...in the level after Hoverboard Beach, don't you have to switch to Iron Knight at the end anyway? That would definitely make that decision easy...shortcut all the way. And as for Devil's Marsh II, there's another samurai shortcut near the end that takes you straight to the flag. So it would be faster to skip that one and grab Cyclone, than to do what nifboy did in his movie, you're saying? -Josh
Yeah, you switch to the Iron Knight to end Pyramids of Peril. On a side note, I found a way to get pushed outside the right side of the screen by switching from Micromax there (sadly, I can't fall past the P blocks). You need the samurai at the very beginning of DM1, so you'll almost certainly have it when you hit DM2, and there it's simply a matter of hitting an ice block, running over to grab Cyclone, and then falling down the hole you just made.

I think picking up Berzerker in HotW2 would be faster than picking up the samurai in E3... But here's a quick study of what the affected levels look like: HotW2: Slower E3: Faster WC: Faster SS: Slower (probably by a lot) CC1: Faster (maybe, depends on how useful Cyclone is) But unless Sinister Sewers turns out to be like HotW2 (which I doubt), Cyclone is too important to lose before then.

I suppose so. I can jump *to* that point but the wall is pretty solid there. I'm just thinking a the Sonic record wouldn't be nearly twenty seconds slower if it used the exact same path as the Knux run...

Eh. It's a frame. It's not like you haven't already found a couple dozen frames to cut off from the previous version.

I'll be honest, I screwed around in Debug mode for the better part of an hour and I have no idea what you could possibly do to cut ten seconds off. I managed to get squeezed into a wall (where the designers cleverly hid spikes to kill those who did) and kill myself on the egg capsule, as well as find an upper path that isn't going to cut time (it's slower)...

Just two really fast comments: First, I checked both the tricks you mentioned (the chem 1 strat and the oil trick) and both can be done with the ROM you use. Second, frame advance should be your best friend. It makes the above tricks incredibly easy to do.

Some general comments: Roll more, and charge up the spindash better (top speed is in, what, six revs?) by doing it at 6% speed or with frame advance. Don't bounce around quite so much; the fastest way isn't always running at top speed all the time. For example, slow down before hitting the monkey in EH2 so you don't bounce on top of him. Don't hit corners or you'll lose your speed. More level-specific comments: 1) I think it's possible to pass between the green-yellow-red bumpers in Casino Night Zone without having to hit them. 2) You missed a HUGE shortcut in Sky Fortress Zone. Instead of going back and up to the top of the ship after passing under, just take a hit and pass through the blades on the right. It's an easy thirty seconds. 3) Final boss can be done much, much faster. Don't spin away from him and try to attack pretty much constantly.

Well, if you're taking the teleporter in CC1 you don't have quite so much luxury in picking up Berzerker there; you have to take a little side-trip at the start of the level instead of the one right before the flag.

Well... You need Berzerker to get through Crystal Crags I, so you might be better off grabbing it in HotW2 even if you do take the Elsewhere. Oh, and I just tested it out and found you can go through the elsewhere from CC1 without taking the Iron Knight, by jumping from a hidden passage on the top left.

Agreed, it's an awesome level. My only idea concerns that stupid cannon block that stops your first double-bounce. Did you try crawling under it as it disappears, or is that slower?

I was just thinking Alien Isle might not be a bad place to see if airwalking helps. It doesn't work as Micromax (who can't duck), though, so you'd have to lose the helmet when you get there.

Flashback for SNES ('cause I did the Genesis version). No pixel-perfect manuevering required, very few frame-specific commands (repeated rolling, mostly) just good old planning and experimentation.

I'd go with the teleporter, myself. It's a neat little hidden room to show off, and it's boring to sit through the end-level thing anyway. Random tip of the day: Note that you can keep the extra speed from bouncing while flying with Cyclone.

Eh.... I might be going soft from the relative lack of challenge in other RPGs, but this thing was so painful to play through I quit after dying for the third or fourth time. It wasn't worth it.

EDIT: Nifboy, can I stick that map in somewhere in the Kid Chameleon Tricks page or some related page? I think it would be a very worthy addition. You'll get credit of course.
Go right ahead.

I knew I missed a warp. There's a teleporter from Forced Entry through an Elsewhere to the Cliffs of Illusion. (edit: fixed map now) Except for the one in the Crypt, all of the recursive Elsewhere loops I can recall go backwards. The helmets might be useful, but there are some levels it's just not worth it. (Edit: The Elsewhere at Sky Fortress leads immediately to the other teleporter in the level, which leads to Final Marathon) Monster Island is particularly annoying, because it's a monster-filled level with two teleporters at the end. Choose the wrong one, and you gotta do the whole level over again. There are other levels like it (Stairway to Oblivion comes to mind) but Monster Island sticks out.

In a fit of boredom I mapped out the entire game, in case anyone was curious.

Yeah. I've had the exact same trouble in each of the (six so far?) times I've done it, although I wasn't counting frames. You do hold the jump button when you get close to the top so you hit the ceiling earlier, right?

...I am amused. I'm not sure if it's the right way to go about starting the game, but it is nontheless amusing.

FF1-Ruby.fmv: 16150 (after 10 mins of pause, plus an incredibly long time waiting to launch the ball. I eventually set it to 500% speed) Didn't see if it started a new game. edit: Oh, and I checked out the Rockman 2 fmv (v1) but forgot to post the results: Rockman 2: 8510, 26380, 10750, 16900.
