To answer your question: Yes, this is not the only talking NES game. Specifically, the game Special Cybernetic Attack Team says "You must destroy them. The Earth is counting on you! Good luck!" when you start the game.

To make it easier for everyone else, I have posted the compiled version of the emulator on my webpage: http://lingcog.iit.edu/~scubed/games.xml http://lingcog.iit.edu/~scubed/fceu-0.98.16.luke.zip

I just tried running the Luke version on an AMD64 machine. It just segfaults right away.

I am only familiar with the US version. I have some questions about what you are doing in your movie: Right before the first crystal (12900) how do you get the door to open without the sphynx? In area 12, in the maze to get the second sphynx (22800) (after the first sphynx to enter the maze), why do you go down the whole chain, instead of starting at the bottom like I did? Or does that not work in the J version?

Thank you. I was able to use fceu-0.98.16.luke to watch a NES movie in Linux. Though, AUTODEMO didn't seem to like playing movies from absolute paths. Copying it into the same directory made it work. For compiling it, it didn't like boards/super24.c boards/sheroes.c It complained about the line: static uint8 *CHRRAM; I removed the "static" and it was able to compile. (Though I probably broke something in the process.) What is the proper way of fixing this? Can there be a link on the emulators page to an easily Linux-compilable version?

It is possible to jump right below the top of a platform to fall through it. There was a movie demonstrating it. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get it to work consistently. That should allow easier access to the lower cave area.

My friend sent it to me because he found it funny too. I didn't particularly find it funny. It didn't look like the player was on crack either. It looked like someone playing normally who was seeing the maps for the first time. Whenever I am playing something new and difficult, I usually end up doing about the same thing. Get a little bit further each time and die, memorizing the details of the map so I can get further next time. (For general playability, I consider HAVING to memorize the map a bad thing.) Considering the difficulty, I think that he did pretty well on 1-1. I'm surprised that in 1-2 he didn't let the lift push him through the wall each time and instead tried to fall, getting killed by the fire bar several more times.

Ah, my friend sent me this link a few days ago. I don't have Flash installed, so I had to ask him to resolve the link for me so I could watch it: http://hot.tudou.com/flv/005/296/053/5296053.flv According to Google translation, it is called Mario Metamorphosis. That link would also work if someone wanted to mirror it. I agree that it does not appear to be AIR style, just hard.

You could have that the movies files had essentially the same information in them. You could have:
POWER
>
>
>A
>A
A
stuff like that. It should be possible to have equivalent movies. However, I imagine that syncing the emulators while recording the movie would be extremely difficult. Also, you would have to state the button correspondances for the game. (A on NES could be C on Genesis and SELECT on NES could be A on Genesis, for example.) I suspect that you should pick whatever button mapping is convenient for the particular games being played. To have a movie like this, a program should be included that automatically converts from one of the movie formats to the other, so it would be easy to see that they are in fact the same. I don't think that playing 2 of the same Megaman game at the same time would be that interesting.

Long ago, back in the days of Nesticle, there was a contest for getting the high score in 1-1 in SMB1 on http://themushroomkingdom.net/. I got 53500 points. http://lingcog.iit.edu/~scubed/smb1pts.zip This was made with a (really simple) movie editor. (Much inferior to what FCEU has.) It did have the ability to edit the graphics part of the save state, so I added a little title screen. Also, that means that it does not start from power on. Although I'm betting that the score will be easily beaten, I think that it is interesting in that it is from back in the days of Nesticle. (I have other old movies that I made if there is interest.)

That's not how the doors work. When you go in, there is a chance that you fight a miniboss or that it just gives you the item being held by a statue. I'd estimate that getting the statue instead of a miniboss is somewhere between 1/2 and 1/4. So, it should only take a few seconds to get a key and go in to get the scroll. I'm not sure how long that is compared to how long it takes to hit that many times.

So, you beat the whole game without getting any items? Aren't the white comb items speed ups? Does it always take too long to get Also, the scroll item (after the lightning in the menu) from the locked doors, I think it does 16 damage, which would make the boss battles MUCH shorter. Are you sure that it takes too long to get the item than the time that it would save? It would certainly reduce the monotony.

I think that the most practical way about it would be to design an interface between your general TAS engine and the different emulators. You could have commands to send keys, load state, save state, etc. That way you could have the same program talk to the different emulators, while still keeping it separate. It would still require a lot of tweaking source code, but not as much as building-in the bot.

This was one of my favorite games when I was little (both NES and Arcade versions, which are very different). I have a map of the warps that I made still. Unfortunately, I agree with the above. The whole game is an autoscroller. There isn't much to do in the way of tricks. The speed-ups max out at 2, so it is still easy to control the character playing at normal speed. As for short cuts, when you run out of energy, you lose a life and get send back to the beginning of the zone (section is a multiple of 20). I believe that the M weapon does the most damage. It changes to the M/F combo if you collect another M, so you would have to be careful not to since that can't fire as fast. (You have to make the upper shot disappear to fire again.) To make the secret portals appear, shoot at the top of the screen. The warps mentioned above that are hard to find are in sections 47 and 54. Fortunately, they were nice and both the left and right warp take you to the donut miniboss. (Interestingly, the other miniboss in the 3rd zone can be fought many times to keep on getting the +8 max HP item. That is the only way I know of to get the full 99 HP.) Once you know the path, it isn't that hard to beat the game without cheating at all. ---------------------------------- Here is the map I have:

You'd have to ask him why he cancelled his run. (I never said that mine should replace his.) Our runs have different goals: Mine: warpless, best ending His: warps, any ending (worst) All of the endings are about the same in this game. You rescue a different number of people, the pyramid gets destroyed to a different height, and there is different text. I just chose that path because I would rather have the game entirely completed instead of largely skipped. It's my personal preference. Using warps makes most of the game just the ending rooms. It makes it a bit more monotonous, not that it isn't a lot of just jumping around anyways. Still, ask Guybrush.

Yes, it does get a bit repetitive. Do you have any ideas on how to make it seem more diverse? The part that I found annoying was 12-maze. So much time is wasted waiting for those doors. I can't even jump for parts of it. The other run uses warps to go straight from the first area to the last. I don't know if something happened to the other movie. P.S. I edited my movie slightly so it now has some comments in the subtitle stream to be like one of those "DVD extras".

You don't have to use wine. I found a Perl script that someone wrote that can apply IPS's on other operating systems. I can post it if anyone is interested. Thanks for the information about these other Metroid hacks. I just finished playing through Metroid Legacy on my own. Now I am playing through Metroid Limit, but I got stuck. Does anyone here know where to go after you beat Phantoon? I can't find where to go next. It looks like there are lots of places to use the speed booster, but I can't find it. That it gives you the varia, I'm guessing that Norfair is next? If anyone has a hint, I'd appreciate it. Edit: Never mind, I found the passage. The entrance to Norfair is right above the save point. I feel silly now.

What is with the 2 FDS errors? Also, why did you die in one flying section? I don't think that you should die unless it is useful in some way. The shaking at some parts was a little funny.

>If you are not going for the fastest time possible, then I would doubt your run will be accepted at all. That is not necessarily true. For longer runs, I think that it is a bit more forgiving on accepting them for not being the fastest possible. The most important thing is to be entertaining. Still, you should try to be as fast as possible. If you can get a few extra tricks in there too, it is that much better.

If your eyes bother you, an easy thing to do is to take frequenty eye strain breaks. Also, depending on the browser that you use, you can hit CTRL++ and CTRL+- to change the size of the text. That makes it easy to read even if your eyes aren't in focus. I'm not sure that fighting the 2nd and 6th bosses is really an issue. The game doesn't actually require that you fight them to progress. You can just ignore them and then come back later in the game when you are at a much higher level. I don't remember if this holds for the other bosses. I think that some are required. I know this because I played through the game once just running through. After beating the 8th boss, I realized that I had completely forgotten about 2 and 6. Needless t o say, they didn't put up much of a fight. I think that you probably should power level a little on those worms. The extra offense and MP should help. Also, fobbies + fire = lots of exp. Also, I think that it might be fun to see someone simulate teleport beta using teleport alpha since you can press buttons that fast in a TAS.

>there were many worlds in that game beyond the normal 8, likely junk levels like the "minus" world. Is this true? Yes, that is true. You can set the world variable to a different value to visit these other worlds. That was one of my past times when I was little. I would use game genie to visit these other worlds. Some are quite interesting. Some other ones, I have never been able to duplicate. I don't remember off the top of my head any worlds to tell you anymore. There are lots of areas that reuse map data from other areas, but use a different tile set. So, for example, they can be underwater or underground or in the clouds, when the original is normal above ground. Of course, none of the pipes work, just like in the negative world. There are also a few places where you start by falling from the sky, but there is a ceiling, which makes the game freeze because it expects you to fall a certain amount before starting everything. This is true of other NES games as well. (Other systems just tend to freeze.) For example, one that I particularly remember is in SMB2: you can go to world 1-F. If you add that up, it is 5-2, but it uses the map data of 5-3. There are some differences, but it is still beatable. If you take the warp, since you are in world 1, you go to world 3 instead of world 7. If you beat it, you go to world 5-3, since that is what is after 5-2.

As can be seen it this thread: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=73568#73568 I have done an unofficial encoding of this movie. Many thanks to Guybrush who helped me with the encoding.

Since it hasn't gotten many votes, I doubt that it will be accepted anytime soon, so I have done an unofficial encoding: The movie: (34 MiB) http://lingcog.iit.edu/~scubed/mightybombjack-timeattack-scubed.mkv Container: Matroska Video: H.264 Audio: Ogg Vorbis 1 subtitle track The subtitles: (with controller input) http://lingcog.iit.edu/~scubed/mightybombjack-timeattack-scubed.sub MicroDVD format The movie contains the standard subtitles generated by nesvideos-GENSUB from this site, but I could not get the controller input to work with Matroska subtitles. (Those subtitles were generated from the subtas program from the forums.) SRT doesn't seem to like the '<' and '>' characters. Even when those are replaced, MKV doesn't seem to like having rapidly changing subtitles. It took me a while to get the audio to sync after adding my logo. (It's supposed to be a lightning bolt, even though it doesn't look like one.) The way I finally got it to work was by using -oac copy in mencoder. Doing -oac pcm introduces a strange delay for some reason. Encoding the movie still generated a lot of warnings, so please tell me if it doesn't work. It does work for me on MPlayer. Any comments are welcome.

I've tried only leaving my life in Zelda 1 for the NES. After doing that twice, I had only 1 heart container left. When I got to the 3rd and final guy, I went to spend my last heart container. It didn't make me invincible or anything like I had hoped. It just left me with 1 heart container, so essentially you get through for free. I have only tried it in 1 version of the game.

>"i like it, but it's too hard for me" Yes, it is hard for me too when I play it normally. I waste a lot of time luring monsters away and scrolling them off of the screen. I still die a lot. Yay for slow motion and save states. I don't think that I have ever gotten the best ending without save states. I can get the worst ending though.
