I just don't think this game is suitable TAS material; I found this run very boring to watch. Perhaps the astonishing length of the run contributes partly to that. Besides, there's an obvious mistake right around 00:00.00 where you don't do anything when you could have. No vote.

I've been wondering when we would see this - it's been a gap in the series on the site. Anyway, this is well-played, even if I'm not a fan of the Mega Man games in general (shock and horror!). Yes vote.

What andymac said. Also, we have a page for tracking the new category meanings, and you can track how we're doing in re-tagging movies (help with that would be appreciated).

I can't tell whether this run has been cancelled or not; on the forums it hasn't and on the queue it has. In case it hasn't, I'll voice my agreement that no run of this game can possibly be entertaining, and vote no.

Having watched most all of the other fighting runs on this site, I draw two conclusions from watching this: 1) This game is exceedingly slow-paced in comparison; 2) This run does not have nearly enough variety to make up for that, and the game is arguably incapable of providing it. By the standards of the other runs of this nature on the site, this just doesn't hold up at all. No vote.

I'd be interested in knowing how this one frame improvement was achieved; can you be more specific about the details?

Some discussion on that point is taking place over here.

There's a very slight nostalgia factor here - not because I've ever played the game but because the original run was the second run I ever encoded for the site. Anyway, the improvements are obvious and significant, and this gets a yes vote. ...and an encode: http://www.archive.org/download/SmsAlexKiddInShinobiWorldIn0621.08ByAngerfist/alexkiddshinobi-tasv2-angerfist.mkv ...and DM: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbpja0_sms-alex-kidd-in-shinobi-world-in-0_videogames

This is very boring to watch; all you're doing most of the time is walking to the right. This is not quite trivial to TAS, though, and effort has been put towards it, so it stays out of No territory and gets a Meh.

I'm not a fan of the Mega Man games (shock and horror!), but a good improvement, especially one from one whose runs of these games are heavily anticipated, is always worth publishing. ...i.e. yes vote. Currently uploading an encode; I'll post links when it's done uploading. Oh, and I'm going to recommend frame 14623 as a screenshot: ...because of the allusion to the Pharaoh Shot glitch (as I understand it), and because I think the recommended screenshot (frame 122603) looks boring: EDIT: Encode: http://www.archive.org/download/NesMegaMan4In3400.02ByGlitchman/megaman4-tas-glitchman.mkv (DM to follow). Ah yes... I've played some of the other earlier ports of this game. Just out of curiosity, is there any reason you picked this one in particular? (Most of the ports would have different levels, so...) The thing is, I'm not sure how well suited for TASing the series as a whole is. There's not much that happens differently from level to level, so the interest would largely be restricted to route planning, and even then for people who know the games; watching more than a few levels for anyone else is going to get boring fast. Personally, I'm just on the side of a yes vote, and I'll be interested in seeing how this is received by everybody else. You probably know the X-COM games better in their original DOS incarnations (or perhaps the later Windows Collector's Edition), but rather good ports for the first two games to the PSX featuring 3D-rendered cutscenes and significantly better music took place at some point. This version of the game supports the mouse peripheral, and would probably best be TASed using it. A run of this game would be all about luck manipulation (and figuring out what affects the RNG in this game). To wit: The win condition is to destroy the alien brain on Mars, which is the second part of a two-part tactical mission; to start on this mission you need a craft capable of flying to Mars and the knowledge of your destination. Both of these require large amounts of research, but not too much in the way of prerequisites - everything for the Avenger can be scavenged from one intact UFO (Alien Alloys, UFO Navigation, UFO Power Source, and Elerium-115), and the research chain leading to the alien destination requires an alien commander, found either aboard a Battleship or inside an Alien Base. The approach, then, is to manipulate a UFO to land and an alien base to be built near your starting base. The folks over on the SDA forums appear to have this down to a fine art by now; the most recent iteration I can find is 13:20 (segmented, despite being one video file; listen for jumps in the music), with clear room for improvement with the significantly better luck manipulation and mouse control that a TAS can allow for. What does everyone think? Is this worth pursuing?

I don't think there's any compelling reason to have two players performing identical actions in a game of this nature, and apart from that this run is identical to andymac's. No vote.

Well, I liked the earlier submission for this game; improving upon it is a good way to earn that Yes vote from me.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 (2.66GHz), 4GB RAM. Twilight Princess: 30FPS in intro, 27FPS in game. EDIT: 21 -> 27. Not sure what I changed to get the FPS boost...

...whereas DailyMotion has a 20 minute upload limit; it means we have to split videos less and generally results in less hassle on our (the publishers'/encoders') part.

Okay, I've looked into it and it seems to be an emulation bug. I've tried hitting Cortex at different places and having each hit take different parts of his life. I've tried leaving the fight and beating him again, but nothing works.

Problem solved. Leave the run as it is; we'll need to add a note to the submission (and/or publication, if applicable) to that effect.

Wait, what? I was able to watch it just fine. The point of the vast majority of movies on the site here is to start from reset and clear SRAM, so that we have well-defined starting conditions.

I've always found watching the video file to have superior visual quality; this method also avoids possible visual buffering delays and (for some of the media sites) the need to cycle between multiple videos for sufficiently long runs. As such, the quality/size ratio remains of paramount importance in my view.

I have found that using the BIOS now listed in the submission text causes the run to sync (the advice about the RE1/2 fix is still completely irrelevant). Is that permissible?
I'm curious about this as well. What is this BIOS, how does it differ from the usual BIOS, and should it be permissible?
It's my understanding that most other runs don't use a BIOS file at all - you'd need to ask someone who's actually created such a run.

Also, is the RE1 hack confirmed to be moot? If so it should be removed from the submission text. If it is necessary, then arukAdo's points need addressing.
It's moot - PCSX disables it automatically when starting the movie.

This is normal for this game? It really has no ending sequence?
The game's divided into chapters related to individual characters. This run completes one such chapter. I suspect there is a credits sequence after all of the chapters are completed, but not knowing the game I don't actually know if that is the case.

I can't speak to the judge's intentions, but I can comment that this is a similar situation to the (relatively) recent glitched Chrono Trigger or Earthbound runs where a run arguably in a different category (there, glitched vs. glitchless) is allowed to obsolete another very old run on the site with the intent of removing the old movie while still allowing the possibility of a new improved run in the old category to come forward and be published alongside the new run. This hasn't actually happened yet, but the possibility is still there.

It isn't, at present, but it looks like it's a reasonable start; I'd take this over to whatever thread the game has for feedback past this point. (My French is rather rusty; help with translating would be appreciated?) EDIT: Here is the current thread for the game.

Let's see... 1) unapproved hack; no distinguishing game play to warrant its approval. 2) link to the hack in the description is incorrect (try searching for it). 3) doesn't use a good version of the ROM to apply patch to (it uses (JU) [p1]). Kill it with fire.
