you know just for the record, I came so close to getting up the ledge in the shortcut to land's end in the sewers...there's a trick where you can time a jump off of the trampoline by jumping towards and engaging in battle with the Shy Away just as you are about to land on it, and promptly running away; Mario will be on top of the trampoline and there is one frame where he can jump off the trampoline...but the shy away and treasure box are both too high even then for anyone who is dying to know what might have happened if the ledge was accessible here's a savestate I made after messing around with some random RAM address to get Mario up to the ledge edit: just for the hell of it, I played it up to Valentina...the game freezes because Dodo doesn't have a middle party member to fly off with, so hypothetically speaking, if in another alternate universe someone DID find a way to get up the ledge you would need to do it after getting at least Geno

the fight with Jinx is gone...and that saved approximately 4 minutes the other 2 minutes were saved only because I was able to beat the bosses faster with the Troopa Pin equipped; maybe also partially to the fact that I had Mario equipped with the Exp.Booster in the Culex fight yielding him 976 experience points and a level higher in the fight with last few bosses in the Smithy Factory for those that have already watched the original submission the difference begins at the start of the Megasmilax battle

how do you change the current movie file without comprising a new submission?

I voted yes. There were some parts of the movie I was dissatisfied with though, such as the battles with Culex and Smithy. Those parts were just ruined due to the fact that the same items were used over and over. Also, I think better results would've been achieved if the Troopa Pin was used instead of the feather or Jinx Belt. Not only does Troopa pin increase speed by 20 like the feather, but also gives a permanent attack boost by 1.5X (much like the quartz charm, but that also boosts defense as well) Aside from that, it is a worthwhile movie. This game is one of my top favorites, and I'm glad someone made a movie for it. ^_^
I didn't know that about the Troopa Pin. I could rerecord from that point and probably end up cutting off a few extra minutes at the end...it wouldn't take too long because I can hex edit most of the data into the proper places. I'll probably have it done by the end of the day.

I understand...and I don't in any way endorse the endeavor for this to be encoded into an AVI because I wouldn't want anyone tieing up their connection without realizing they are downloading 1000 MB+ of impertinent dialogue. Another reason for the save states, for anyone who wants to watch a section of the movie any time they want. For anyone making a run as long as this I strongly recommend keeping a collection of save states to release with their submission. Thank you all for your comments!

Just make sure you don't check 'volume height envelope' and 'sync sound w/cpu' boxes...as a matter of fact, all you really need to check is the first box.

World 3 complete...two full minutes faster! Much of the saved time is contributed to the cumulative frames saved from faster egg making and better egg strategy, using eggs where it would save more time and making them where it doesn't lose it.

Some more tips: - only fight battles that reward with Flower Tabs (all of the power-up jumps in Bowser's Keep and the fights in Mushroom Way and post-Croco Mushroom Kingdom are unnecessary in the long run) so that inlcudes quite a few in the Mushroom Kingdom; also grab the Wake Up Pin from the vault guard, it is still important for good defense (Flame Wall is cut down from 10 dmg to just 6, a significant difference at this point in the game) - raise Mallow's Mag.Power accordingly to do 30 dmg to Mack's bodyguards for instant kill; I had been raising stats by whichever one had the highest bonus at whatever level...don't do this for Mallow, but I guess it's okay for everyone else for the rest of the game - use the Boo in the lower level of the room with the super star as a platform to get to the higher level with the star - don't need to drain the water in Kero Sewers...use the Boo as a jumping platform to get to the pipe that leads directly to Belome - don't need to fight Pandorite to get Trueform Pin in the Sewers; Mario just uses Jumps on Belome anyways, and I end up equipping a Wake Up pin from Rose Town to protect against Bowyer's 'G'Night'. The Trueform Pin has slightly higher defense but it's not worth the time since you'll never use it. - didn't need the Froggie Drinks (maybe just 1), but the less items in your inventory the better (see earlier post on why) - should have skipped the frog coin in Rose Way; jumping on Wigglers is faster! - in the Forest Maze, should have snagged 2 frog coins from the first Wiggler (1 to compensate for botched Rose Way one) and two more from the Wigglers in the large series of pipes to prevent having to backtrack like I did - buy three pairs Work Pants and as much upgraded weaponry as possible BEFORE entering the Moleville Mines to fell the bosses quicker (sell the Froggie Stick and the Hammer; they are very valuable) - don't buy any Froggie Drinks - don't fight Hidon in the Sunken Ship - don't use up the Fire Bombs after the last of the Bandana Red fights - kill Johnny with Super Jumps before he gets tough - when your max FP starts getting into the 40's, sell any extra flower items - for god's sake don't wait until after the Barrel Volcano for the Lazy Shells and Culex/Jinx fights I recommend using the lucky jewel on the following monsters. The newly doubled XP given to all party members (the numbers shown are already divided between the three) is in parentheses. Knife Guy, Grate Guy (60) Bundt, Raspberry (50) King Calamari (66) Bandana Red x4 (48) Bandana Red x5 (60) Yaridovich (80) Belome (62) Megasmilax (80) Valentina (108) Culex (400) Use the Lucky Hammer bought at Seaside Town on the Shogun fights, since only one Ice Bomb is used to take them out.

fire and ice bombs can be obtained in moleville from the item trading business in one of the shacks...100 pts yields any type of the three bombs (excluding Rock Candies) but that would waste too much time trekking back and forth for bombs, and the only items you would have enough of up to that point would be a couple of KeroKeroColas, which you need at least three alone to get a bomb...so it would be quicker to just sell them in Seaside Town to get the bombs faster (you get more bombs for kerokerocolas compared to points) the list you gave has a mistake: the ding-a-lings are NOT weak against ice as it is obvious when you use an ice bomb...if you want reliable stats download the PIPES rom editor here although it doesn't give XP or coin stats, it reads from the actual rom. It is also inaccurate in regards to XP for individual bosses...it merely gives the total from all bosses in a single battle and divides them among party members, but that isn't really a concern since it gives the actual amount given to all party members anyways, so it's probably more convenient keep in mind that ice bomb and fire bomb animations are over 60 frames faster than rock candies so I still recommend using the bombs when exploiting fire/ice weaknesses...I sure wish they had thunder bombs I don't know what the hell the guy in the low-level walkthrough at gamefaqs is talking about when he claims you can go through whirlpools without fighting Shoguns...honestly I tried jumping in at many different times and the Shogun still popped out, ready as ever.

complete new save states: Barrel Volcano - Factory I included the Jinx and Culex fights for anyone who would like to refer to them or judge whether or not they and their rewards are time attack worthy. For anyone determined to make a much greater run, please consider these tips: - Try to weed out the unnecessary fights at the beginning to the ones that only give you flower points. You can see by my run that you need no more than 47 to have enough FP to last, but at the beginning in the Croco, Mack and Bowyer fights specifically, I use syrups to restore it. Keep in mind the multiples of FP costs in proportion to your max FP. - Test the number of frames in comparison between getting frog coins from Wigglers and frog coins in secluded places (adverse examples include frog coins that are slightly off/directly in your path or in the same room). - Maybe consider saving some of the Lucky Jewel turns for XP goldmines like the Culex battle or the later battles in the Volcano and Factory. - Buy as many fire bombs and ice bombs as possible to save time when timing for freebies (which is the most tedious thing in a run like this). I wish I hadn't used up the fire bombs, as I found enemies with fire weaknesses later on in which the bombs would have sped things up. - The lazy shell route I took was poorly chosen...the shells need to be gotten (if at all) as soon as possible; I could have ended the Czar Dragon and Axem Rangers fights much quicker. - There are many more kinks in this, like the individual menus I bring up, where it would have been faster to do it all in one menu routine. This was poor planning. I didn't need to buy all of those Freshen Ups and Froggie Drinks, and I should have sold the extra Mushrooms and Honey Syrups to avoid the needless scrolling through them and constantly moving left/right in the battle menus which I hated doing so much because it was so time consuming, wading through the retarded surplus of mushrooms which I never ever used. Do not buy more than you need. - Don't bother with frog coins after getting the XP booster. - Only time attacks when necessary, this includes jumps. It won't really look like a mistake if it's the final blow. Use fire bombs instead of Mario's magic because they are much faster...except on the last boss, where they are much more powerful and Smithy changes his head after a certain number of turns (regardless of how much damage you have dealt him) so you need to squeeze in as much as possible in those situations. Here are some of the tricks I discovered: - Using enemies as platforms when invincible...this is similar to the 'jumping on and running away from' trick used to get to Land's End from the sewers. There is only ONE frame you can do it, though, so it must be timed perfectly. I've only found two uses of this so far (Bandit's Way and Kero Sewers). - In Rose Way, don't wait for the moving platforms to move to the next land mass. You can jump to move them quicker. That's all I have so far. Questions, comments, and crits (particularly) are welcome. If anyone wants to append their tips or tricks feel free to do so. Thank you nitsuja for your incredibly improved snes9x and making this run (and others) possible! I'm going to turn my attention back to YI now.

after Valentina's defeat new save states: monstro town - nimbus land I know this is a little early for an update but snes9x won't let me load anymore save states made after 500,000 recorded frames (it keeps giving me the 'not a movie snapshot' act) so I'll either have to split it (the movie) up or wait for a fix.

The mega glove in Nimbus land technically has a higher attack power but the masher has a VERY wide attack range and can be controlled in a time attack to do very powerful hits, much more damaging than the mega glove's maximum capabilities. The ultra hammer should be taken into consideration, though that's quite late in the game but better late than never.

Try unselecting the "sync samples with sound CPU" box. This options make all my games freeze at some random point. Must be a problem some CPUs have handling this option ... I dunno ... but since I unselected this option, everything's fine.

Why did you heal with a froggie drink when fighting the cake? It didn't do any damage at all after that.
He heals in order to survive/not to heal in the next boss battle, which is in the sunken ship against the octopus (don't remember it's name ... if it has one)
Actually, HP/FP is restored after boss battles. I just used it because I wasn't doing any frame by frame manipulation up to that point (I've started doing it in the Smilax battle), and any other chosen action would've resulted in death for two members (without taking heavy manipulation into consideration) so I'm entirely at fault here. A new run would fix that and more. The Masher is such a powerful weapon if used correctly that I'm considering skipping the Lazy Shell in favor of it...would that be wise?

I don't know why I bothered to fight Hidon in the sunken ship, the safety badge isn't that invaluable. Also, OmnipotentEntity is right - I only need one of an item by using freebies. I still think the fire bomb and ice bomb should be bought to use against monsters with such weaknesses, as fire bombs can deal 360 damage and ice bombs 420 damage with inherent weaknesses and Geno Boost. Rock Candies only do up to 300 with a boost.

terrapin battle scripts are 3 random actions: attack, attack, and nothing (info from the rom) so you could get them to sit idly by while you kill them off...actually you can manipulate the entire lineup of mandatory fights to prevent magic attacks but only enough so you don't die from it, because it gives it a living on the edge sort of appeal timed jumps are slower, as are all other timed attacks and magic so I do not use them unless necessary...Croco only loses a turn the first time you use fire orb to 'douse a tail fire', and fire orb seems like it takes very long, so I went with the jumps instead I did a lousy job collecting frog coins...maybe I should have used the Wigglers more often instead of other times where it takes more time. also the Lucky Jewel should be used as many times as possible until it runs out for I would already have the super suit/attack scarf by then...fortunately, the bandana reds and blues in the sunken ship can be manipulated to give lucky flowers so that saves three turns

I'm just going to run through this game with no intention of submitting it after it's done. I'm hoping it can be just be used as reference for a better optimized run. After Knife Guy and Grate Guy's defeat. Save State collections: Mushroom Way - Kero Sewers Rose Way - Booster Tower I'll be using the lucky jewel in boss fights to double XP. Does anyone know, or has tested whether it is possible to get 4x experience with the Exp.Booster AND the Lucky Jewel? King Calamari gives a whopping 100 XP; hypothetically, a LJ/ExpBoost combination would yield enough experience to allow up to three consecutive level ups. edit: I just tested it with a hacked save state and yes, it does quadruple it!

About the jumps: every time Jump is used its power increases. I was able to charge it up just barely enough to save a turn in the Hammer Bros. fight by pulling off two 25 (total HP of Hammer Bros. is 50) to the one that used valor up. I don't time the hits unless necessary, because of the delay. Here is a new movie up to the entrance of Kero Sewers (with save states). This is the only time I plan to spend so much time leveling up...the rest of the game I will attempt to run through as fast as possible, using super stars to gain levels and gathering enough frog coins for the Exp.Booster.

I've decided to take up this game. Here's a movie up to the defeat of the Hammer Bros, made with the newly improved snes9x (v3) found here: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1816 Check the 1st, 2nd, and 4th boxes under emulator sync settings for correct playback. This isn't a test movie so comments are welcome.

Nice work, SMRPG didn't desync once with the proper settings. It runs correctly at any speed now, turbo or otherwise. Here's a test movie. (only check WIP1 timing, fake mute desync workaround, and sync samples with sound CPU to play it back appropriately).

A minimal run in and of itself would be approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, and since many levels are nearly twice as long to complete with 100 pts and the extras (most notably the autoscrolling extra in world 1) would inevitably put it well over 2 hours, which is the movie time limit. The best bet would be to either split into 2 files (preferably world 1 to 3 and world 4 to 6) or wait and anticipate a possible limitless recording feature in later releases. A 100% would be much more interesting, but I hope I can entertain with what I've got going so far.
