Fortunately, you only need Wii friend codes to look someone up on Mario Kart Wii, so I'll go ahead and be lazy and let that stand for itself. :D

My yes vote stands. And you even found three more frames this time!

Not to totally buzzkill the sarcasm, but I watch N64 runs at 1600x1200 as it is, which is only an aspect ratio change away from 'true HD'. Just put some useless info or eye candy on the boxed out area on the side and you're in business.

I'm of the opinion that a stand would not help the Wii Wheel at all, because you still have to use your right thumb to hit the gas. It's too awkward for my tastes.

I definitely prefer this to Double Dash, but I'm beginning to wonder if they'll ever make a Mario Kart as fun as SMK or MK64 ever again. Well, on the single player side, at least. Multiplayer has always been awesome.

I've become rather fond of the classic controller setup, personally. I might be more inclined to use the Gamecube controller, if the cord wasn't so bloody short.

Btw, superjupi, who is your avatar?
Etna from Disgaea. A friend of mine I've known online for years said after meeting me in person that they saw me as a strange hybrid between Etna and Tinkerbell. I just went with it and adopted her as my avatar.

Some laptops, like mine, don't have a separate numpad; that could be a factor for those of us who primarily use laptops. For example, I have to press a key labeled Fn together with Num Lock in order to toggle certain keys between the usual mode and the numpad mode.
Totally understand. That's actually why I only use my laptop for watching movies, and do all my playing on the desktop.

After hearing what a blast multiplayer is, and how Nintendo's online play finally seems to be coming together properly, I decided to go ahead and pick this one up. But before I jump into multiplayer, I have to give the single player game a go. My thoughts? SNK invented cheating bastard AI, and Nintendo applied their logic to mascot racing. When it was first conceived, I was convinced Double Dash would be the pinnacle of cheating AI. Omega Tom Hanks is envious of Petey Piranha in the hands of Double Dash AI. When the game shows complete disregard for its own physics model just for the sake of making you lose, there's nothing more you can do, short of the developers hiring someone to bust down your door and kick you in the head just as you're rounding the final turn. Mario Kart Wii continues this tradition, and it sure doesn't seem to be getting any better. Drifting is easier than before, and mini-boosts now charge automatically, which is both a blessing and a curse. It was possible to crank out mini-boosts much quicker on MK64 and MKDD, but the new system does help even the playing field a bit. Unfortunately, the AI still cheats like no tomorrow, and item boxes continue to give you nothing useful. On my first race in 50cc, I was pummeled by five shells in quick succession by the computer-controlled opponents just after the final turn, just meters away from the finish line. The first race on the easiest class, and I fail to place in the top three because the AI can expertly aim all weapons, and always has something to murder you with at any given time. Someone needs to hang for this. Oh, also, don't bother with the Wii Wheel. Nice little novelty, but you'll only get slaughtered that much harder for attempting to use it seriously. Stick with one of the other control methods.

It seems I'm even more alone on numpad usage than I thought. I'm rather envious of those of you who can play with the key layout backwards.

In retrospect, the justification I provided for my vote makes no sense, seeing as the run sans text speed could assumably be duplicated on the U version. I'm not burned by the text being in Japanese, however, and stylistic choices aside, this run is still faster than the currently published run, even taking away the regional text display time differences. I suppose that at worst I'd give it a 'meh' vote for a weak reason to switch regions, but a thumbs up on merit alone. In other words, my yes vote stands. If this happens to get rejected due to poor region switch reasoning, I hope to see it duplicated on the standard U version in the future.

Honestly, this game bored me when it first came out, and my opinion of it never changed. But I won't lie; I'd like to see this game thoroughly owned in a proper TAS. If work on this continues, consider it watched.

It'll be difficult to be special if its public release is dependent upon it being matched or bettered by someone else's public release. The best response you'll be able to give is, "seen it already."

Japanese keyboard layout isn't drastically different from English layout. A few differences, but they're mostly minor.

If the text speed of the region change accounted for all of the time saved, I'd vote no. But because other improvements were made, I'll go ahead and give it a thumbs up.

Yeah, I searched for a related topic beforehand and didn't come up with anything. I was rather surprised.

After years of cursing the default key layout of, well, every game and emulator I've ever used, I've become curious as to just how alone I am here. When faced with a keyboard, I always map action buttons to the numpad, d-pad to the arrow keys, and various hotkeys (frame advance, save/load state, etc.) fall somewhere in the surrounding area (/, *, +, -, etc.) of the numpad. If I happen to be stuck with an unchangeable layout, which invariably has action buttons mapped to the alphabetical keys, I am forced to physically cross one hand over the other. My brain is incapable of letting my right hand take care of directional keys.

It's not horrible to look at without the expansion pak. And I say this after having played the Dreamcast version to death. It may not be marvelously pretty, but it's not as though most of the N64 games have aged well, either. I'd like to see it, either way; this and Rogue Squadron were the only two Star Wars licenses I actually enjoyed playing.

For playing, I typically stick to a gamepad. Depending on the situation, I'll either use an N64 controller, DualShock2, or the Saturn-style Vampire Chronicles controller. I also have an adaptor for Xbox controllers, but I never really use it much. For TASing, I'm more likely to use my Logitech keyboard than anything else, because it's more convenient when using hotkeys. The ability to make use of left+right and up+down where applicable is an added bonus.
