Yeah I wouldnt worry about fadeout lag in this run. I'm willing to stare at a black screen for a few more frames if it means the levels are more entertaining.

I think this was Bisqwit's original intention of the concept/demos section.
I was going to make a post about how some people might feel bad that their hard work ended up just being a "concept demo"
As a potential concept demo author, that's exactly how I feel. With Tub's idea, I would have no objection to being a link under the main SMW movies: its just the whole separate page for concept demos where new viewers wont easily find them that I dont like. So for me its not that concept demo is a bad thing, its just it wont be grouped with other SMW movies and thus probably wont be seen by SMW fans who arent used to the site.

A Concept Demo, of course! Seriously, that'd be still too ambiguous to call that type of run minimalistic. On an unrelated note, such a run bears a bit more entertainment (to my personal taste) than a full-powered one, because of the lack of the damn cape.
I wouldn't really consider my "no powerups" SMW run a concept demo. Super Metroid "100% items" isnt a concept demo, so I dont think a SMW "0% items" should be. The movie is being made to complete the game as fast as possible just like any other run, and there arent any "dirty" restrictions on it such as newgame+ or a different ROM being used. Under Tub's idea, this run would just be one of the links below the main SMW movie(s), such as "Reverse Boss Order" in the Super Metroid example listed.

Right now I am working on a TAS that completes all of SMW without collecting any powerups (the entire game is done as small Mario). What would you call that?

I really like that screenshot Tub posted on the first page. It reduces the clutter and makes it easy to find everything related to a certain game. For Super Mario World, you could even have links to the Super Demo World runs. As far as what is and isnt a concept demo, I think Tub's idea really makes this a non-issue. If all "concept demo-y" runs have links next to their "real" counterparts in the movies page, then authors of concept demo-like runs wont need to worry about their run being placed in a "dumpster" section and not being taken seriously. There arent really that many games that have multiple movies with different goals, so I dont think Tub's idea would be too hard to carry out. The one problem with this idea is that a nice one or two word link doesnt always clarify the goal of the run (when I see Super Metroid "minmal," I dont see a clear difference between that and "any%"). There might be some cases where a sentence is needed to explain the goal of the run, but I dont think the occaisonal sentence would cause any noticeable clutter, since in most cases one or two words will do.

A Wario's Battle Canyon TAS would be insane. Someone should definately make a run of this, and minigame island isnt a bad idea either. If you could manipulate where the star would appear, the only thing holding you back would be coins, and for Cast Away you could easily get 40 coins per player each time you play the game. So if you could manipulate Cast Away every time, you could easily get 2 stars per player per turn, meaning youd have 100 stars in only 13 turns. If you couldnt get Cast Away every time, there are still other coin-collecting minigames to choose from.

Yeah that should work. Another option is using Yoshi and using B to get the opponent in an egg that falls off the edge. A lot of this TAS would be manipulating the behavior of the CPU. You'd also have to consider if you wanted to manipulate certain items to appear for things like the polygon team where a pacifist bonus would be difficult. Good luck on this run antd, I look forward to seeing it.

Well if you want to do it, by all means go for it. Seeing a Fabian and JXQ 11 exit run will be awesome! :) I wont work on it if you guys want to, its no problem. You should also try and find out from flagitious what improvements he had in mind.

SkamastaG and myself are going to work on this run. We are currently working on YI2, and know several improvements besides flying in Bowser's Castle. Since you're not going to do this run flagitious, do you mind sharing the other time savers you had found?

I am planning to accept both TAS and emulated videos that are not tool-assisted. I am considering going with three categories: TAS, not tool-assisted, and "somewhere in between," for videos that use some slowdown/savestates but are not full-blown TAS.
If you are going to have two totally different sites for tool-assisted videos and non-tool videos, why would you have any non-tool videos on the tool-assisted site? Also, I agree that you should not use YouTube since people there can never understand what a TAS is. I'm not too familiar with how google videos works, but I dont really see the point of putting videos there if you're going to have them on your site.

I like the idea of having a place for the "cool but not fast" TASes to be seen. As far as your three categories, I would definately get rid of the "somewhere in between" category. If a run uses any slowdown or savestates whatsoever, it is considered tool-assisted, theres not really a gray area. The non-tool videos would also be nice, but for the sake of verification they would have to be played on console, not emulator. Also, make sure there is a clear distinction between the non-tool and tool-assisted areas and that the concept of a TAS is clearly explained. Good luck.

Its a 120-star run single segment. Finishes in a time of 2:09. Pretty damn good speedrun. I'm watching it right now.

I actually enjoy it. Twice as many presents at Christmas! Plus I like telling my friends how cool the 80s were since I was born December 30, 1989 and was around for them.

antd, awesome BtP videos. I cant wait to see more. Do you know where I can find videos of the non-tool BtT and BtP records? Or if not videos, just a list of the records? I have playing SSB lately and I want to see how my records stack up. Also, if I may make a request, I'd love to see a Pikachu Break the Targets TAS. I have been messing around on this stage a lot and I want to see what a perfect time would look like. EDIT: Nevermind. I think I found the site you are using. Is this it? These videos are absolutely insane, anyone who hasnt watched them should definately give them a look.

Yeah I'd remain small until DP1. I will be redoing it all though because of fadeout lag. I tried squeezing under that last spike in Bowser's Castle, and its not looking too good. Someone else can try it though, dont take my word for it. skamastaG has suggested that maybe taking door 7 would be beneficial, since you can use the flight glitch to start flying immediately in the hallway, immediately once in door 7, and immediately in the dark room. So essentially you never lose flight throughout Bowser's Castle.

Yeah the fadeout lag will probably be the hardest part of this run. As far as I understand, every digit in your score over 4 adds to the fadeout lag, so you want to manipulate your score to have as many digits under 4 as possible. Is this correct? Is there anything more to it than this? Do coins, gate points, sprites, etc also affect fadeout lag? And what are the differences between gate fadeout lag, key fadeout lag, and castle/ghost house fadeout lag?

Wow Arne that was incredible! I cant believe no ones ever thought of doing that before. Awesome trick. Now there is actually a significant improvement to the 11-exit run. Flying through the first room (door 2) in Bowser's Castle could save a noticeable amount of time. In the second room (door 5), if you were able to squeeze past the last spike, it would be a huge timesaver because you wouldnt need to wait for the spikes to rise, you wouldnt need to have the game paused when you are hit, you wouldnt need to have the game paused to collect the backup cape, and you wouldnt need to slow down to get this second cape. Doing this trick in the second room of DSH would save some time as well. Also, the spinjump off the flame in Castle #1 could save a few frames as well as two missed corner boosts in DS1. Also, maybe a frame or two saved by using 6/5 over 8/5. I have talked this over with skamastaG, and we have officially decided to put the small-only run on hold and start working on a NEW 11-EXIT RUN. What are your thoughts on this everyone? Are there any other possible improvements you can think of before we start? It may not be a huge improment over JXQ's run, so would it still be worth doing? The SMB1 run has been obsoleted by one frame, so I dont really see any problem in obsoleting JXQ's run by 1-2 seconds (maybe). JXQ's run is incredible, but there are plenty of unused tricks to be shown off, as well as the timesavers discussed above. What do you think? I am very excitied to start working on this.

Yeah. It has recently occured to me that the majority of the levels in this run will use 6/5. As if I didnt hate it enough already.

Quick update for anyone interested in the progress of the small-only SMW TAS being done by skamastaG and myself: DP1 key is almost done, all that remains is the shell jump up to the key. 15,800 frames, 7526 rerecords, 0.5 rerecords per frame. Since a large part of the beginning is cutscenes, the rerecord/frame count will likely be even higher as the game progresses. ;) Other SMW TASers, just out of curiosity, what have your rerecord/frame counts been on average?

Hopefully this can be done without slowing down because it would add greatly to the entertainment of the run. There are a lot more lvels with winged koopas than you think. Levels like Vanilla Secret 2 would be insane. This trick has time saving applications on many levels, in some cases even if slowdown is required: DP3: You could use it to cross the gap where the on/off switch is. DP4: If there is no way to avoid the last hammer bro, you could try to apply this trick to a winged goomba to land on him right as he was about to jump and thus have the goomba in your hand without slowing down to kill the hammer bro with. DS2: Use a shell to jump over the green pipe at the end. VD1: Grab shell from either first or second bouncing winged koopa and use it to break the yellow blocks at the start of the third room. VD4: Shell jump over the tall white pillar after the halfway gate. VS1: For the top exit, use the shell to kill the koopas floating above you, fot the lower exit use it to make the jump to the pipe. VS2: Ha. FoI1: Pretty far fetched, but for the key exit grab the winged goomba and have him wake up just as you make the jump to the key and jump off of him. Do goombas even "wake up" when you gran them as buzzy beetles do? FoI4: To get into the blue pipe for the secret exit. But 52 hop glitch (if its profitable for the key exit) might give you enough distance to make it anyway. CI3: Just to have the shells for the secret exit. VoB3: Use a shell jump if theres some gap later in the level you couldnt normally make. SW4: Quicker setting up of key exit trick. Funky: Getting through yellow blocks. As you can see, there are a lot of places where you could potentially svae time, and also many places where entertainment would be increased. Would this work is the koopa was just moving up (like in VS2 and Tubular, for example) or does it have to be jumping?

Does this only work with jumping koopas? If it works with all koopas, it could make a lot more levels a lot more entertaining.

Yeah PMing the WIPs is a good idea to make sure there are no mistakes. Does anyone else (besides Fabian, I've already got him on the list) want them? jimsfriend? JXQ? Fabian, I like using ( ) too. I bet I've used them in more posts (percentage wise) that you. ;) skamastaG, I have no idea what our time would be, be it'd be cool to try and beat Fabian's time. It might be close.
