Man, did anyone besides me and cpadolf even see the improved Sparkster run? It deserves waaaaay more than two votes.

For fighting games like street fighter, pure speed is a bad goal for a TAS, because it results in boring videos with frequent interruptions to the flow of the action. Previous successful TASes of fighting games have chosen instead to showcase interesting or funny aspects of the game.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't those kanji read as "kon" "to" and "ra" respectively?
That is correct. The Japanese version appears to have been named Contra... but with kanji to make it cooler!!

This seems a little bit premature. Shouldn't it be tested and verified that the emulator is in an acceptable state before that happens?

I think I suggested Ferret's run that's on here, although perhaps that was irresponsible since it seems like I'm going to have to vote for one of my own...

Eh. This wasn't really a serious TAS project to begin with, I didn't put a whole lot of thought or effort in. And since it was sleep deprivation that motivated me to do it in the first place, I was not really in peak TASing condition. You see no goals on the submission because my only goal was to satisfy my own curiousity about what a better optimized version of Nineko's submission would look like... which it did. However, clearly, better is possible, and I would be interested in seeing that -- just not in making it. In light of this, I am cancelling the submission. It's served its purpose, reached its target audience (actually far exceeding my expectations of interest), and seems like it may have inspired others to take up the project with a more serious effort.

Actually, I suppose my concern is really with the new site layout as a whole. The redesign made it a lot more gaudy, and that makes me hesitant to show it to other people. Luigi isn't really at fault for the effect, but he does magnify it somewhat.

My concern about Luigi is that, well, having a little character running across the top of my screen makes it somewhat embarassing to browse the site in a public environment. If he only had a 5% chance of appearing, or maybe just didn't show up on the root page, that would be a lot better.

  • The EM glitch involves jumping from the first upward curve after the breakable blocks up into the sky to change which plane you are on, thereby skipping half the level. A human can really only do it quickly and consistently with Tails, as well, but it's certainly possible with Sonic, who would no doubt be best in a TAS. Also, make sure you do the ceiling jump prior to the loop. You probably already did this but I couldn't tell so I'll just remind you.
Thanks. I've actually been asking around to try to find info about that glitch. I probably won't be doing much of anything more with the competition mode in terms of TAS submission, but it's always good to have glitch and shortcut info on hand in case someone needs it.

I've been less active in the workbench forum since the switch, because whenever I vote, I feel I should post and explain. And it's a lot easier to support "yes" or "no" than "8.4/9.7" or "3.2/5.0"

the spindashing apparently allows for some rather significant glitches not possible in the original game. We had a discussion on this subject with the Zelda outlands submission. The consensus there was that breaking a hack wasn't a very entertaining game concept.

There's also a possible sync problem if the encoder uses frame decimation to produce the video, because decimation lowers the total number of frames (and the video framerate, correspondingly), so you might end up with 60FPS input display over ~50 FPS video.

I just watched this on youtube and... I'm kind of disappointed. The boss fights have been optimized to the point that, literally, if you blink you will miss them, but the walking/dashing/flying around the castle has not. The result is a very low action to length ratio.

My vote is Lord Tom. He "only" made four runs for NES this past year, but each one of them is brilliant. The other nominees have done more movies, but each have at most two or three truly excellent NES publications for this period.

I guess my previous topic was misunderstood, as a result we have no additional nominations for the following categories. I will leave this thread up for 7 days at which point I will make polls for each category. Please nominate movies for the following categories: Sega TAS of the year current nominations: 1188M Sega CD Sonic the Hedgehog CD in 17:27.64 by Nitsuja SNES TAS of the year current nominations: 1139M SNES Super Metroid in 22:01 Cpadolf, hero of the day "Glitched-any%" Lucky TAS of the year current nominations: 1145 Genesis King's Bounty (USA/Europe) by gia & Aqfaq in 00:09.93
I am sure that there were more nominees than this before the console nominee topics were merged. Specifically I recall that Sparkster was nominated for SNES, and that S3K was nominated for Genesis. Though I could be getting confused with the Special Star discussion thread... I'd also like to add nominations for the following categories Sega:
  • [1060] Angerfist & OgreSlayer's SMS Wonder Boy 3
  • [1180]Upthorn's Genesis Ecco - The Tides of Time (gauche, I know)
  • [1044]Mmbossman's Genesis Sonic Spinball
  • [1098]Adelikat's Genesis Contra - The Hard Corps (full)
Lucky:
  • [1146]DarkKobold's Genesis Shining Force
Speedy:
  • [1232]Cpadolf's SNES Sparkster
  • [1231]Ferret Warlord's Genesis Desert Demolition (Road Runner)
Unfortunately I've been kind of lax in my TAS viewing this past year, so I'm not familiar with the breadth of the SNES, GBA, or NES offerings.

Pokemon yellow is my favorite kind of glitching... Sorry, other three runs. You weren't bad, but the glitching just wasn't hillarious the same way it was in Pokemon Yellow.
