Simple, no-nonsense thread for people to recommend books to each other. Because "book club" has no meaning if we don't all read the books together, and "bargain bin" is needlessly limiting. Regardless, I'm going to start with Riverrun, by S.P. Somtow, a book that could easily have fit within the bounds of the "bargain bin". Riverrun is difficult to describe. The main characters are a normal American family whose mother is dying of cancer, and so are on their way from Virginia to the Laetrile clinic in Mexico. Along the way, the younger son, Theo Etchison is kidnapped by a vampire, in order to literally-and-figuratively navigate his ship along the river of time-and-space. It turns out that the vampire is one of three heirs to the throne of the universe, at war with his siblings after their father split the territories a'la King Lear, rather than choosing a single heir. The result is a book that has an fantasy-esque struggle of good versus evil and sci-fi elements as the remaining family back on Earth shifts between several alternate realities, but is at its core a story about a family coming to terms with their mother's illness.

why even bother following their progress if it's so terrible?

Makes sense, but in the future it might be worth additionally nominating the winners of each console category, for the award of TASer of the Year.

I vote no in the context of this replacing Genisto's run. Genisto's run didn't aim for speed, and the invisible blocks in it were just that -- invisible. Genisto's run also demonstrates a mario engine glitch which is impossible to perform in this version of the hack, because of the mid-air jump ability being removed. Also, it is much more entertaining to me to see the puzzles solved than to see the player jump out through the cieling and run across the level.

I don't think bisqwit was referring to the bump, so much as the fact that the post he was quoting was nearly a year old, and the information given in response to the quoted post was redundant.

I am slightly confused about the "TAS" of 2007 and "TASer" of 2007 categories. About TAS of 2007: Why aren't the winners of the "lucky tas", "glitchy tas", "funny tas", and "innovative tas" included as nominees. About TASer of 2007: Shouldn't the nominees to this category have been determined based on the winners of the other categories, as with the overall "TAS of 2007" category?

As moozooh said. The 2007 S3K didn't add a whole lot over the 2006. But the Super Metroid 100% was fast and innovative. The SM64 0 star is also fast, and somewhat entertaining but the 16 star was more fun to watch, and 0 star wasn't achieved by innovation so much as by luck.

The glitch is useless, and I don't think Mr. Sweed actually reads the forums. Every post he has made has been a new topic. If you still wish to view it, though, rename your "sonic and knuckles & sonic 3.srm", and play this gmv in fast forward. It will generate a completed save file for knuckles in slot 1. If you don't know how to fast forward in gens, hit f4 until it says that frameskip is set to 8. Then when the credits begin, hit f2 to return to normal, and play the other movie.

The real shame is that people on youtube keep posting a comedy sketch as though it were a serious talk show. And nobody bothers to read the comments saying "this is actually a comedy sketch, Erik Hartman here is a character played by Tom Van Dyck. Google him."

Just so that people who aren't very good with changelogs know, this version includes ... input display bug fix used for watching the published Super Metroid 100% run.
Actually, it's probably backported the working input display from 1.51, because from what JXQ describes, it behaves differently than the bug fixed 1.43 that I made. In any case, nice work Gocha. It is good to see useful work being done on snes9x.

Wouldn't it be better to decide on what the game is and how it works before picking a platform/language/etc'?
That would be smart, yes. But I'm not sure how many of the people in this topic actually feel like being smart.

I'm just going to chime in to say I think this is a bad idea. Not the part about making a freeware game, just the part about making a game solely so you can TAS it. The only reason TASing is interesting is because the games that we do it to were made without even any inkling that TASes would one day be possible. Of course, the other part that I think is a bad idea is making a serious story for it, I have a feeling that anything most of us (myself included) would write for such a game would come out sounding like bad fanfiction. So yeah, that's my two cents.

So this is a game a friend of a friend made.
Now I'm wondering who you know that knows Kayin. I've been thinking about making a topic about this game, because I hang out in #finalfight, and was able to hear all about the game as it was being made.

I said that vetorman was not an obsoletion. And indeed, the prior submission was rejected, not published. Although, if you want me to consider the difference in quality between the published vectorman and the rejected submission, it is, in fact, larger than the published Gunstar Heroes and the obsoleted one. Which is, perhaps, part of why the old gunstar heroes movie was published, and the old vectorman movie was rejected.

I give my vote to hero, as well, because his contra 3 run is awesome, as is his super metroid, and the third run listed here is a totally different type of game from the first two.

Tough choice between Adelikat, JXQ, and Randil, but as has been the theme with the rest of my votes, versatility wins the day. Edit: now I can't remember who I voted for, and the explanation I posted here doesn't really help.

Hmm… 100% Super Metroid. I considered 4-p NoES and the quadrun, but I decided that they were only incremental progress from two/three-player runs and the dualrun respectively. Typing text and making amazing animations with mere input display, on the other hand, is really something nearly none of us fathomed seeing at then current level of tool-assisted movie history.
This. JXQ singlehandedly invented a whole new form of entertainment which can be added to runs.

100 CDs Rockman & Forte edges out All Items super metroid for one reason: The 100% super metroid improvement is kind of boring if you've seen the old run and don't have input display on, whereas the 100 CDs Rockman & Forte run blows the old one out of the water.

If I could, in good conscience, vote in this category for someone who stuck to one system, I would have difficulty choosing between xipo and klmz. Instead, my vote goes to cardboard.

Mukki, for doing two very different games, instead of doing the same one over and over. Although credit must be given to AKA for also doing duke nukem, it must be taken away for returning to SM64 time and again.

My vote goes to emu, because I rolled 1 on the 4-sided die that represents my choice between emu, mmbossman, adelikat, and jxq.
