For this category, I like to imagine Shining Force as a marathon runner whose competitors keep randomly tripping on rocks, pebbles, curbs, and even their own shoelaces.

I do believe S3K wins my vote in this category.

Tough choice between Nitsuja's S3K, Arkiandruski's Gunstar Heroes, and mmbossman's Vectorman. I think I'm going to have to choose Vectorman simply because it was a new run, rather than an obsoletion, but even so this barely puts it ahead.

I am having difficulty choosing between SMB2 and Journey to Sillius. I will therefore vote for whichever is the underdog between those two.

Majora's Mask is the only run listed here that I really enjoyed. Super Mario 64 0-star is cool and all, but it is essentially just a small piece of a run we already saw many times before in various forms (16 star, 1 star). Meanwhile Majora's Mask is both cool and totally new.

Most of you have at one time been thinking "I give up on this shit" and you find a new project. As the topic states, what is your hardest or most irritating part of TASing? For me I'd say luck manipulation, especially for the Zelda Oracle series.
I have to say that, for me, the most irritating part of any TAS project I've ever done was trying to live up to the standard Nitsuja set when he started his S3K (Sonic + Tail) TAS while I was working on my S3K Knuckles TAS. Apart from that, I think the most irritating part of TASing is reproducing a glitch that you accidentally stumbled on, aren't really sure how it works, and recorded over in your own stupidity.

I agree with AKA, except that this hack isn't nearly as interesting to watch as The Second Reality Project was.

Sonic Drift 2 (and possibly the first) do not run in Dega. They work properly up until you actually begin a race, and then simply freeze.

Yes. That's what going to differentiate this thread from other similar ones.
You mean, apart from it being on this forum where there are no other similar threads?

This isn't bad but...
  • I wonder how much time, if any, picking up a second boomerang could have saved. Unlike most spells, you can have two boomerangs on screen at once. Two is the limit, though.
  • I'm also not totally convinced that it wasn't worth trying to manipulate arrows for the mummy dragon. The mummy dragon fight in the SDA video is a lot faster than this one.
  • On the Skeletal dragon, does your last swipe deal exactly 4 damage? I noticed that you manipulated 8 damage on every swing before it, but I wonder if it might have been faster to do a 4 on one of those and then an 8 on the end. Actually, a couple of the delays are so long I wonder if it might have been overall faster to go with a smaller hit for that round, even if it meant having to make more hits total.
  • Lastly, did you consider using death as a shortcut back from collecting the legendary sword? I know the continue screen takes a while, and you would still have to make your way back from town to the beach, but I'd like to know if you tested it, and what your results were.

Although I haven't actually watched the run, I nominate "[1004] Genesis Shining Force (USA) by DarkKobold in 2:08:40.07" for Lucky TASes category.
I have watched this, and second the nomination -- every hit in the run is a double, critical, or double critical. Also, no damage is ever sustaned by any character except ones whose death is necessary for enhanced speed.

I actually meant about Journey to Sillius. But then again, he did also discover a glitch that has lead to 3 "perfect" movies being obsoleted.

Many SMS roms labeled as [U] or [E] are actually [UE].
All of them, in fact. SMS had no regional lockouts preventing U or E games from being played on E or U systems. Games would play a little slower on E systems, but I don't think there were any instances on SMS where a company actually changed the game for the E release. [quote="zidanax"Is there a preference between using the prototype and the E version? (CRC 1B1D8CC2)[/quote] This would have come out during the time when Ninja was a censored word in England, so if it says [E], is in English, and uses the word Ninja in its title, it is the [U] version, mislabeled.

This might be a good time to write up some guidelines for file naming so that encoders and publishers can have something to reference and be certain that they have named the avi correctly.

Man, this game looks weird. There's such a difference in quality between the sprites and the backdrops, it's kind of insane. Sound isn't bad, though. And the run is also decent, of course, so this falls pretty solidly into the yes category. But, man, does this game look weird...

I'm not sure what version he's using. I did figure out that he's probably using the sega cd US bios version 2.00. When I try to load his movie with the v1.1 bios it doesn't work at all. I haven't gotten it to sync from the start still, but at least I got the good ol' US soundtrack working using a new cd image. Pretty happy about that.
For me it only worked at all with the v1.1 bios...
