To give another update on zipless: Link to video The 3 routes I'm considering are extremely close--within 16 frames of each other. I was hoping one route would be clearly superior to the others so I wouldn't have to TAS this game three times...but it looks like I got unlucky :( Here's a sneak peak at Seth's route: Link to video

Happylee, have you seen my ghost script for this game? It doesn't support multiple segments yet, but it can make some pretty cool comparisons. I thought you might appreciate it. Of course, the ghost script doesn't show projectiles and enemy positions, so your video will be informative, too. Actually, what if each movie showed the other as a ghost? That would be kinda cool!

To give an update on zipless: Seth Glass has proposed a complete route overhaul, something quite rare nowadays. It's
Q -> B -> F -> H -> A -> M -> C -> W
(Metal, Crash, and Wood can be in any order). I timed some things, and it looks like the new route will be 60-some frames faster than the old route! I'm also looking into:
Q -> M -> B -> F -> H -> A -> C -> W
It should be about halfway between Seth's route and the old route. i.e., suboptimal. But all 3 are extremely close!

I find it interesting that the fastest game isn't 9 holes in one. It defies expectations and makes each hole potentially a little different. I voted yes.

Thanks, man. Glad you're enjoying it even if there aren't any cool zips!

User movie #52299635407908344 Link to video And the robots are down! I see a prime bowling moment right here. Oh wait. Wrong game. As I do some routing for the Wily stages, I'm also going to chip away at the Robot Masters and see if I can't save a few frames here and there. I want to sit on this for a while before I push forward for real.

May I suggest calling it a "genocide" TAS? :D

Desyncs? On the NES? In 2018? No way! Who knows what arcane and terrible tricks they used to make that game work. I might have to try Vampire myself.

Bumping this decade-old thread with my contributions to this game: Link to video Link to video (These link to a playlist where I will be uploading all my Action 52 stuff). You can shit out an Action 52 TAS in like an hour ;D I haven't even bothered with RAM watch. Also, the games run at 30fps, which really is a drag. Right now I also have Micro Mike and Meong in the works. Meong is gonna be really stupid. Oh, also: someone was working on Dambusters as of 6 years ago, but the YouTube video seems to have been taken down.

Link to video Been working on a ghost script for this game. This video compares two different routes through Quick Man's stage: Visan's Item 2 route (which I'm calling "Visan's Ride"), and the buster-only route. Savings are 44 frames, improved boss fight notwithstanding. Link to video I was, of course, inspired by amaurea's script.

Here's the trick in context. I also did some Item 2 stuff in Metal Man to save a couple frames. Did you know bonking the underside of a conveyor belt applies its speed to you for one frame? Because I didn't. But now I do! Link to video Link to video Hilariously, this Item 2 placement is frame perfect. Isn't that the least impressive frame perfect trick you've ever seen??

"Heaven portal." Bit of a melodramatic name for an upwarp, don't you think? 😉 This was a cool run. Like I said on your YouTube video, it's nice that you can carry goombas around without it being some big cloning ordeal.

Method 3 seems to produce good results, even if it takes two separate upscale operations. Method 2 is a cool math problem, I kinda want to code it up. Thanks for the tips!

  • Genre: Sports
  • Aims for maximum score
  • Ends input as soon as possible
  • Never ends
Beautiful objectives list there

Does anyone here use ffmpeg for upscaling? I've found its nearest neighbor scaling produces uneven pixel sizes sometimes. Maybe it's because I'm upscaling as well as stretching to 4:3?

Can't seem to find that, but it sounds awesome. Did it get accepted?

Link to video #5913: warmCabin's NES Mega Man 2 "Fastest Game Over" in 00:02.78 I made this joke submission on April Fool's this year. Nach "freezed it, burned it, electrocuted it, lifted it up only to throw it, cut it, and just plain blew it up." But I've been thinking about the point I was trying to make: input ends 6,817 frames before the goal itself is actually achieved. What legitimate games/categories have the biggest difference between end of input, and achievment of goal?

I think so too. For 100% IGC, you could even justify the spatula cheats, which let you do the levels (which you still can't skip) in any order you please. But it comes down to the same question for each, doesn't it: do the codes make the game interesting enough to be worth an exception?

I'm curious if the community's "NG+" category would be accepted on this site. We've essentially created our own New Game Plus by allowing two, and only two cheat codes: unlock the Bubble Bowl, and unlock the Cruise Bubble. You still need to play the whole game and collect 75 spatulas, but you start off with all your powers already. It substantially changes up the game, even allowing you to skip two really slow boss fights. I can repost this question in the SpongeBob thread if it's beyond the scope of this thread.

Link to video Oh boy! I can't wait to redo 60% of this movie! Yeah, this strat saves 49 frames. I got it from a Japanese runner named Visan, who seems to be the only person to use it in runs. The primary difference between him and this movie is that he switches on a pause buffer, rather than shooting for a really tiny frame window as he falls. I did test some Item 2 stuff when routing Quick Man, but not once did it occur to me to shoot it up high and then catch it as it flies by...it's a super sick strat!

Looks like I jumped the gun a little on this encode. I saved 4 frames in Bubble. By promptly wasting them, I was able to save 2 frames in Heat, which turned into 1, and then 4. What a game!
