Q, do you have any intention of making a new video with the new Oil Ocean trick? Hopefully the levels afterwards wouldn't desynch horribly and would just require minor modifications ...

Will Ferrell* emulating George W. Bush* emulating a monkey* emulating Shakespeare* emulating Bacon* emulating Jack Swigert*. *In SNL. *No explanation needed. *With a typewriter and an infinite number of his friends. *This one is for you conspiracy theorists. *Francis Bacon, Kevin Bacon, same thing, right? *For the really hardcore conspiracy theorists, add "emulating an astronaut."

I'm the best Sonic 1 / Sonic 3 Competition Mode speed runner in the world and I don't even bother trying to emulate on a console what I can do on an emulator. There's really no point.

Heifetz and Horowitz have no obvious flaws in their playing. If he wishes to be a technician of the highest degree then he must eliminate them all. It is both necessary and possible.

What ROM are you using for this run? I can't get Super Metroid (JU).smc to work in any version of SNES9X, you get owned by explosions during the initial escape every time.

For some strange reason I must echo Bisqwit's sentiments ... Watching this video was more disappointing than anything else. I'm hard pressed to give any reason why, though, since a 19 second improvement is astonishing in concept. Maybe it just didn't seem clean to me, or perhaps there are just so many times I can watch those autoscrolling levels before I get bored of the game entirely.

Guys ... I have a confession to make. I use slow motion and savestates in all my Sonic videos. Don't hate me!

If you recall what all of Ghost's records were, those are my own, since I am Ghost. *GASP*. Glad to see you here ybbun, I'd love to see what you can do with an emulator. Have you watched my various videos? http://www.geocities.com/xebranick/Sonic1Acts1-10byxebra.zip http://www.geocities.com/xebranick/Sonic1Acts1-3v3byxebra.zip Those are the two you would be interested in. The first one makes it halfway through the game, though the second one has some astonishing improvements in the first three levels. PS. I hope you won't be mad but I mean to tear apart your SB3 record ;) . After some preliminary experimentation I have decided to shoot for 17 or 18 seconds.

Lol, maybe when I finish it. If they had an award for "Slowest Genesis Movie Maker" I'm sure I'd get all the votes.

Good guess, but no cigar. Rechargeable battery technology is over 150 years old. The technology behind the most popular type of rechargeables, nickel-cadmium, was invented in 1899 and has remained virtually unchanged since 1947. Despite the fact the Ni-Cd batteries are not generally suitable for applications with shallow discharge cycles, the power requirements of a NES cartridge are so minimal that even a Ni-Cd functioning at 1% capacity would doubtless be sufficient. It's true, though, that the much better Li-Ion reachargeables weren't commercially available until 1988, while Zelda came out in 1986.

My battery games still have all their old saves, I wonder why yours haven't lasted as long, Zoizite? (And I also really wonder why Nintendo didn't use rechargeable batteries.)

  • There are not 6 levels where I can collect 50 rings without slowing down.
  • Even if I could magically visit a bonus level at the end of each nonboss level (so I'd have them all by the end of SY2), I would waste much more time in the bonus levels than could ever be saved in the actual game.
  • Even if I could magically start the game with all the emeralds, it would take me more time to get 50 rings in each level than it would take to finish many of them normally.

Oops, I haven't been back to that site in a while, it looks like they made some structural changes and all my links are now broken. I'm away from home for a few days, I'll fix them when I get home.

The goal of this movie is not to complete the game in the shortest time possible, but to minimize the time spent traversing each individual level.

- Not doing the biggest jump possible at the start of GH2 (guessing jump from the downward slope)
That block before the bridge is in the way. I can't clear it if my initial jump is too big. Regardless, speeding up the initial portion of the level shouldn't matter, because the position of the buzz bomber I bounce off is determined by a universal timer (I think). If I get to him any faster he's imbedded too far in the wall for me to bounce off of him.
- picking up the first invulnerability at the start of GH3 and not using it (guessing it's just in the way)
I may have lost as many as 2 frames picking up the first invulnerability, but it's pretty to watch while I'm flying through the air with nothing to look at, and I'm 28 frames from 0"30.
- delaying the eighth hit on the boss
I would just fall through Robotnik without hitting him if I tried to land the eighth hit. If you've ever messed around with that boss you might have noticed it's impossible to bounce on top of him, you just hit once and then fall through. The only reason I can do it now is because he's moving down the whole time, in effect giving me a larger bounce.

I've decide to let GH2 be and move on with the run; 17 is good enough. In GH3 I found a neat way to beat Robotnik fast enough so that he can't even get his wrecking ball out. This saved 3 seconds for a final time of 31 seconds. http://www.geocities.com/xebranick/Sonic1Acts1-3v3byxebra.zip

Q's is a 1-controller run. He does manipulate Tails where possible with just one controller, such as when he breaks a block with Tails in Hill Top.

I have to admit, I was jealous of Q's Sonic 2 run because his Chem Plant 1 is the shortest level in any of the Genesis games (not counting Knux Hidden Palace in S3&K which isn't really a level), and that's a super cool thing to have in your run. Some might say I shouldn't have been that jealous since that was one of the levels I helped him to optimize. In truth, he took the time from 22 seconds to 18.1 seconds on his own, and I came in at the 11th hour and pointed out how to shave off 0.1 seconds for the 17. So yeah, I was still jealous. Anyways, Q, you can have your CP1 because I finally tied you! http://www.geocities.com/xebranick/Sonic1Acts1-2v3byxebra.zip I got 17 seconds on Green Hill Zone Act 2. The run through is still very rough, and I'm sure I can knock off some more frames, though at this point in time I don't see how 16 can be possible. For those that have watched the run, if you land even a few pixels more inside the wall above the breakaways, you are "stuck," at which point pressing left will shoot you off at high speed to the right, while pressing right will shoot you off at high speed to the left. I have not found a way to exploit this, because no matter what I do I have to collect the boots. Launching from slightly different spots inside the wall sends you off at different velocities. It is possible to launch yourself off to the left at just the right trajectory so that you pass directly above the long row of spikes and shoot clear off the screen. When this happens the game starts scrolling at very high speed to the right. I was hoping it would scroll all the way to the end of the level, but I die (even though you can't see Sonic) when I reach the portion with the moving platforms and spikes interspersed amongst each other, past the loop with the 1-up on top. If I jump at just the right time I can make it farther into the spikes/platforms, but I still die. I'm not sure if I die because Sonic, wherever he is, is somehow colliding with a spike, somewhere, or just because that's the first part of the level that has no bottom whatsoever, and Sonic, wherever he is, falls completely off the map. Here is a movie of the glitch: http://www.geocities.com/xebranick/gh2glitch.zip. If anyone can tell me what the heck is going on there, and whether or not it might be possible to do something to scroll past the portion where I die, that would be great.

Q, if you want to hit and collect nothing during Sky Chase, cool, but I think it is a moral imperative that you find something weird or eccentric to do, as well. Ok, when you spam the Jesus out of spindash/cancel/spindash/cancel/spindash/cancel/spindash/cancel (I think you know what I am talking about) you should spell out QUIETUST in morse code: --.- ..- .. . - ..- ... - http://www.geocities.com/xebranick/qmorse.wav

Great vid. (And to be accurate, I didn't quit my run because I was obsessed with perfection. I quit it just because I hate making time attack movies, and it was only fun when Lezard was there to compete with.)

Why not ask the developers of our favorite emulators to work on an "export to SWF" feature that actually makes use of the fact that the only thing you actually need to store is a few sprites and information on how they move? Then you could probably fit any movie into the size of a ROM or less.

Another hero design for all you DotA fans! (Ok, there are like two of you, but whatever.) http://www.dota-allstars.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=31059 This one is by far the most interesting of my creations, though don't read it if you are easily offended.
