I think most would find that acceptable. You could even further change the extension to avoid confusion. .grr maybe :P .

Lezard, you still doing this run? I was playing around in Sonic 1 last night and got Marble 3 down to 1"14, and Spring Yard 1 down to 23.1 seconds or so. SY1 is so close to 0"22, there has just got to be time to save somewhere in my run, but I can't seem to find it. Do you want to take a look at it for me?

I want to time attack some SMS games I own, but as far as I know there aren't any rerecording SMS emulators. I own a device that lets me plug SMS games into my Sega Genesis. I suppose if I hook an SMS ROM into that device and then dump the image from the device, it might produce a ROM I can use in Gens. Does anyone know if this is the case? If so, can someone supply me with some links that have schematics and instructions for building a Genesis ROM dumper?

Testing has revealed that 7 computers can be beaten on The Hunters in under 10 minutes ... unfortunately I am not skilled enough to manage the attack simultaneously on seven fronts, even on slowest speed.

Not that I know of. What you can do is install 1.00, copy certain pertinent files to another directory, and then create a batch file that will copy those files back into the WC3 directory and run the appropriate executable when you want to run that particular version. Then you can patch to 1.01, 1.02, 1.XX and each time copy the pertinent files to a subdirectory and make a new batch file. Then when you want to run any version you just need to run the correct batch file. It's a pain in the ass to do all that, however, and it wastes a good amount of space.

I am studying mathematics in college, but my are of interest is complex analysis, which despite the name has nothing to do with complexity theory. That being said, I do know a bit about complexity theory, enough to say I don't think Chess is NP-complete (it's probably harder). To my knowledge, NP-complete problems are characterized by a few easily understood statements: 1) Given a solution to an NP-complete problem, it is easy to verify the solution is correct. 2a) Spontaneously generating solutions to NP-complete problems is very difficult. 2b) In fact, the difficulty of generating soutions using a deterministic computational model (more on this later) grows faster than any polynomial as you increase the amount of information in the problem. In general, chess fails condition #1. Only in a small proportion of contrived circumstances is it easy to check that any given position is a solution (a win), those being forced mates. About deterministic computational models: - When using a deterministic computational model, when the computer is faced with an option, it chooses one (thus a branch in computation is determined). The computer can only consider one option at a time. - When using a nondeterministic computational model, when the computer is faced with an option, it continues calculating in parallel along all possible paths (thus a branch in computation is not determined). Whenever a solution is encountered along any of the paths, the computation is finished. I offer without proof or proper explanation that NP-complete problems can be solved in polynomial time in a nondeterministic computational model. It is clear however, that chess cannot be solved easily even in nondeterministic model. Even supposing there were ways to implement nondeterministic computational algorithms in polynomial time in the real world (which there are not), the only way to solve a nontrivial position is to first explore all the branchings of all the possible subsequent positions, and then to analyze which branch at each step has the most winning terminal paths, accounting for repeated positions and path intersections, each of which there are in general an infinite number, etc. It's difficult.

I don't mean to diminish your effort, and I know I certainly waste as much of my time on useless, trivial pursuits as the next guy, but what made you think any of those compiled statistics would be useful in the first place?

Blublu, no one gives a shit. Try growing some hair on your crotch. Back to the Brood Wars discussion: Walker Boh, since when was "more or less perfect" sufficient? What was the point of Michael Fried making another SMB1 video? His previous one was more or less perfect. What's 1.5 seconds anyways? I have seen no replays that even remotely qualify as perfect, hence this topic.

I believe getting your reserve item without wasting time is not a problem, in general. You can drop the item with a button press instead of getting hit. (I think it's select, but it's been so many years I'm not sure.) If you use the cape to fly up to a point just under the reserve box, then hit select, that should result in instant flower power without loss of velocity.

Yes there are 1000 replays, but are any of them optimal?

Seeing as how there are less than 300 grandmasters in the world, the odds of finding one of them on this or any forum not related to chess are pretty low. If you are looking to practice your chess game against similarly rated players, I suggest the Internet Chess Club (http://www.chessclub.com). It's the largest online chess community in the world. Many GMs, IMs, FMs, and newbies alike are members.

What sort of goals would make interesting videos in StarCraft: Brood Wars? Here are my thoughts on two goals: - Fastest defeat of a single computer on a small map like Blood Bath. I have little doubt either the classic 6 'ling rush or a perfectly micromanaged worker rush (with 0 lost units) would reign supreme here. The 'ling video would be rather pedestrian. It might be impressive to see a perfect worker rush, if it is indeed faster. - Fastest defeat of 7 computers on a map like The Hunters. This is a slightly more interesting idea, though it would be very hard to perfect because of the amount of micromanagement that would be involved. Even at "slowest" game speed this might be a challenge to do perfectly. I think it could reasonably done in 15-18 minutes according to the in-game timer, which is synchronous with real time on either "normal" or "fast" game speed, I forget which. Some things to note about time attacking StarCraft: - You can only record replays of games played on Battle.Net (or bnetd, etc.), so you can't use cheats. - You can save and reload, though this would be very tedious.

If you are going to do a proper translation, you should attempt to make sure the final product is unstilted and ordered more normally. I suspect Japanese is a language where sentences are often started with indicators of what the sentence is to be about, which results in repetition and excessive use of the passive voice in English. Hence, "The atom with atomic number 112, 'Rakushin,' was discovered by Dr. Gilbert." could, perhaps, be improved to something like "Dr. Gilbert discovered Rakushin, element 112." If you are feeling particularly daring, and the name "Rakushin" is not integral to the storyline, you could substitute "ununbium" or "Wignerium" or anything that sounds more like an actual element. I would be happy to help out by editing and correcting a poorly or directly translated script, but know that I know nothing of Japanese or the game in question.

The aura you emit is the highest one you have available and active, whether it is from a skill or from an item. Bramble isn't all that great for a merc because you really need resistances, leech, and damage reduction to keep your merc alive. Plus Thorns is a useless aura. Doom, Chains of Honor, and Vampiregaze is a good setup.

Bramble is not plus to Thorns, it just causes whoever is wearing it to emit the aura. Bramble and other items such as Doom, Exile, Hand of Justice, and Azurewrath all work together, stack with each other, and stack with paladin auras*. *Using the same aura twice -- once from an item and once from a paladin skill -- has no added effect.

I don't know of a third party program that can do this, and it doesn't make sense that it is possible from a game design standpoint. Additionally it is ... foolish? childish? stupid? ... to assume that because it wasn't said explicitly that you may not cheat (by using a third party program and violating the D2 TOS) that you may do so.

I've been pretty busy with life so I haven't worked on it in quite some time, though I'll start it up again eventually. It will be a long time before I ever finish the game, though, so be patient.

I quit playing DDR in early-mid 2002, or around there, I believe. But back then I could AA MAX300, or, essentially, anything, on solo and double as well. I would also occasionally AAA an easy song (5-7 feet) on accident, but I never made AAA's my goal on feet. I've played in an arcade maybe twice in my life. I played on $10 pads that I modded for increased resiliency and response. I also used to play a lot on fingers and could AAA anything that was ever released on a machine. I could also AAA almost any computer only song, though there were some I never did, like Big Blue X that had serious desynch issues, and A and M that required practice as opposed to familiarity and quick reading skills.

Ah, but the analogies don't hold true. There are purely socioeconomic (note, this does not mean monetary or monetarily motivated) arguments to support the internationalization of the Amazon rainforest. Before I go on, let me note that I have no idea if this is actually happening. I'm fairly current on events and I can't recall reading or hearing anything about the "internationalization" of the Amazon rainforest. I'm not even sure what it means in this context. I will for the moment assume it means relinquishing custodianship of the rainforest to a foreign entity. That being said, large forest reserves play a significant role in the fixation of carbon, which is a great help to those life forms that breath oxygen and not carbon dioxide. Another benefit of this carbon fixation is a lessening of the greenhouse effect. Another benefit of large, mostly unexplored forest reserves is the huge mass of undocumented life forms that live within them. The vast majority of pharmaceuticals come from compounds that were derived from a naturally occuring compound. You might wonder how this can be true since in the past few years almost every new drug on the market was derived from computer simulated compounds. The reason why is that each year since computer modeling has become the dominant force in pharmaceuticals, the number of new drugs on the market has sharply and steadily decreased. This is a fact. Computer modeling is not as efficient at producing new drugs as is finding and modifying exotic compounds that exist in nature. Large drug companies are just starting to take heed of research pointing this out and it is expected such companies will soon reinvest a large portion of their research and development budgets into exploration. All of these things I have just described are benefits of the rainforest itself that no one pays for. Something such as petroleum, which is a natural resource as well, is really better thought of as a commodity because it is bought and sold, and there are no externalities associated with crude oil when it is still in some reservoir in the ground. Various museums around the world are wholly artificial and so a comparison to a forest makes no sense. Take care not to accidentally adopt Communist viewpoints in your rage; all historical indicators point to Communism not being a viable socioeconomic system (at least for humans). Now, if the Brazilian government is incapable or unwilling to properly care for the Amazon rainforest to ensure that the benefits associated with the rainforest continue to benefit mankind far into the future, it is their responsibility to relinquish control to some foreign body that will. Is it true that the countries accusing Brazil of not properly caring for the rainforest have depleted or destroyed their own globally beneficial natural resources, such as trees, fish, clean air, and clean water? Oh, absolutely. But that doesn't mean Brazil has the right to knowingly repeat those blunders and transgressions of the past.

I believe you have only one frame with which to hit Gannon before he dematerializes. I seriously doubt it can be done by a human except by virtue of sheer, unadulterated luck, which is not the best recipe for consistency.

Sorry to burst your bubble but since no one could figure it out, I posted the answer in this very thread 11 days ago, it's on page 4. Mental breakdown averted? Also, you should know, your partial solution is absolutely incorrect and has a fatal flaw. How are you going to fill the four empty spaces in your inventory after you float the cube in your cursor? If you don't know, you cannot drop the Cube, or else everything inside of it will come tumbling out.
