Would it be possible to TAS the DOS version using JPC-RR? I would think that would be better since you could use the mouse instead of a D-Pad. Or does JPC-RR not record mouse movement?

Well, they already add checks to publications that have been verified, as in http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?id=1332,1349,1715. Notice that those three publications, at least, already have links to verification videos. I haven't checked other verified publications.

^ ^ Obnoxious? Do you mean because of the scrolling comments? Those can be disabled by clicking on the little speech balloon. In these particular links, there's even a "hide comments" button in English.

You were having trouble getting the Goo King sword, right? Perhaps lua scripting could help here? With Lufia I was able to find the memory location that indicates if an enemy has dropped an item and if so what item. I then made a script that could quickly try hundreds of waiting times until the enemy dropped a Might Sword or whatever it was I wanted (and it would often take the script hundreds of tries if the item was sufficiently elusive). EDIT: although I don't know what affects the RNG in BOF3.

Quickhex has support for 1.51 movies. It's what I used for ActRaiser. https://code.google.com/p/tastools/wiki/QuickHex

System Error: Which part of the level are you talking about? If it's the first part a little before the scroll, it's because when I jump onto the platform with the scroll I want to go far enough to the right that I can pick up the scroll during the jump, thus avoiding the delay associated with a standing attack. That's means jumping off of the slope just before the spikes instead of the one before it when going for that platform. Walking across that small flat section between the two slopes before the spikes ends up being faster than scaling back a bit, jumping off the slope in back of the flat section, then doing another jump off the slope just before the spikes. Presumably because of the delay when you land from a jump. Also, if I do a jump off the slope in back, I end up having to scale back the jump considerably in order to avoid falling onto the spikes. In any case, walking across the flat section ended up being faster when I tested it. If you're talking about the section with the fast-moving ice block, it doesn't matter how quickly I get to the far right of that section--the ice block will arrive at the same time as if I'd arrived later. What matters is catching the first ice block you can. EDIT: As for the lack of subtitles in the action segments: I could've done it, but I thought people would find it distracting when they would rather just focus on watching the action. I guess I was wrong? EDIT #2: laranja, I assume you mean standing directly underneath the boss? I never actually stand on the same platform as the boss. Standing directly underneath the boss is actually best avoided if possible because then you have to worry about getting hit by not only his lightning but also his body. In fact, the boss in Death Heim would've been faster if I could've done it the same way I did in Bloodpool Act 2 but I was forced to stand directly underneath him due to his different spawning pattern.

Hmm, I'm getting the same error. I've been able to upload many snes9x 1.43 and snes9x 1.51 SMVs before, so I think that Dehacked hasn't added support for snes9x 1.52 SMVs yet. For the moment you'll probably have to use some generic file-hosting service like rapidshare or megaupload.

It's a nice movie, but why aren't you using Snes9x 1.51 or 1.52?

It makes no difference. The number of frames to finish the Tanzra battle is the same as before.

My luck wasn't as good in Death Heim but fortunately I was still able to save frames. I ended up using stardust on the Aitos boss instead of the Kasandora boss in order to get the Northwall boss to use a reasonable pattern. As a result I just saved 83 frames overall. Here's the next candidate for submission. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1922597951/ActRaiser_%28U%29_Zidanax_and_Dunnius_v2%282%29.smv

The Northwall Act II boss gave us the better pattern this time, so the boss fight is now 57 frames faster. The total saved up to the end of the boss is 173 frames. Let's hope this kind of luck holds in Death Heim, since the number of frames I'd saved in Death Heim before was over 300. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1501087351/ActRaiser_%28U%29_Zidanax_and_Dunnius_v2%282%29.smv

I guess the change was somehow too small to have an effect.

^^ Actually, I had tried ending Bloodpool Act II from a higher platform, but although it saved frames in that section, it made my luck with Stardust in Kasandora Act I worse as you suspected. However, you are right about the Northwall Act 1 boss: seems I overlooked jump slashing it on its way to the left, as I was so focused on optimizing spell casts. With enough slashes, I can actually kill it with just 2 spell casts instead of 3. I haven't tried all possibilities, but i've saved 110 frames so far. Don't worry though Dunnius, the sim actually synced when I hexed it in. However, I will have to redo parts of Northwall Act II due to the eyes there changing position again. So the million dollar question is: how will this affect my luck with the Northwall Act II boss and Death Heim? It would be nice if this gave the Northwall Act II boss the same pattern as our first version as that would let us kill it more quickly. But what I'm really concerned about is Death Heim: our luck was rather good this time, so don't be too surprised if we end up backpedaling and using the SMV I just put up, due to worse luck in Death Heim. But hopefully it won't come to that.

It's done! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1758068318/ActRaiser_%28U%29_Zidanax_and_Dunnius_v2.smv Please review and let us know if you see anything wrong. I was quite lucky in Death Heim. I actually lost a few frames on the 1st boss, but I didn't have to use stardust on the Bloodpool boss. Naturally, I lost some frames in that boss fight but that's okay because as expected I was able to save more frames using the second stardust against the Kasandora boss than I would've been able to against the Bloodpool boss. I managed to save 4 frames against the Aitos boss. I was very lucky with the Marahna boss as it always came down with its spikes instead of staying up in the air and shooting bolts. I actually had to delay the last hit a bit in order to manipulate stardust to fall better in the Northwall boss battle, but it's worth it because I actually save a little time in the Northwall battle, more time than I had to delay in the Marahna battle. And the Tanzra battle was already pretty optimized, so that's as it was framewise. Overall, 3143 frames have been saved over our first version. Again, let us know if you see anything wrong.

Dunnius showed me an improvement to my time. Watching it, I realized that I'd forgotten to take into account the amount of lag incurred by the first cast, even if minimizing lag means doing a little less damage. Dunnius had done a good job with the first cast, so I worked on squeezing more frames out of the part after that. Together we managed to improve my previous attempt by 151 frames, so that in spite of the worse positioning of the boss, relatively little time is lost in the boss battle. Including the stage itself, 169 frames have been saved in Northwall Act 2. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1666314324/ActRaiser_%28U%29_Zidanax_and_Dunnius_v2_Northwall_Act_2_Done_v2.smv

Northwall Act 2 done: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1126388661/ActRaiser_%28U%29_Zidanax_and_Dunnius_v2_Northwall_Act_2_Done.smv I gained a fair bit of time in the stage itself, but unfortunately my luck with the boss was worse this time. Instead of coming straight down the first time, then swooping down the second time, it comes straight down both times. The amount of waiting required to change this is sufficient to cancel possible benefits. Even after modifying my lua script to attempt to account for the lag during spell casts (stardust causes more lag than usual here), my best time results in only 18 frames saved in the whole Act.

extra time? At this point in the run (entering Caer Xhan) David K5's video is about 8:44:08. Janus's current WIP is 7:38:36.

I haven't played the game for quite a while but... does going to the outside of the Black Ship temporarily stop the Boost Counter countdown?

Did you try it inside Nintendulator or Nestopia? I believe those emulators are considered some of the most accurate NES emulators, especially Nintendulator.

Ack, I'd forgotten about the few frames of wait time available after Marahna Act 2. Thanks for remembering. It looks like that starfall pattern in Northwall Act 1 is almost identical, so I think we're good for doing the Northwall sim.

The reason I sometimes don't jump into the boss room is luck manipulation. Sometimes the boss doesn't do what I want it to when I jump in, but does when I just walk in. I tried waiting before entering Marahna Act 2. In fact, I tried several different waiting times, but I would either get a worse Marahna Act 2 boss fight or a worse Northwall Act 1 boss fight. In any case, after much messing around I managed to shave off 27 frames: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1938525599/ActRaiser_%28U%29_Zidanax_and_Dunnius_v2_Northwall_Act_1_Done.smv There is still some waiting before the Northwall Act 1 boss, though not as much as before. Yes, the waiting is necessary in order to get favorable stardust patterns.

Northwall Act 1 Done: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/757536462/ActRaiser_%28U%29_Zidanax_and_Dunnius_v2_Northwall_Act_1_Done.smv Unfortunately my luck with the stardust wasn't quite as good this time (it should be mentioned that I was exceptionally lucky with the Northwall Act 1 boss last time) so I've actually lost 19 frames overall in this next segment. Yes, I messed around quite a bit to whittle it down to that.

I haven't played the game in quite a while so I don't have any real input on saving time, although I must say that fight with the Cave boss took a while. I suppose that can't be helped?

I stumbled upon an interesting trick: if you use Magic to merge into one character and then move around using both controllers to push in the same directions the merged character will move twice as fast. Unfortunately, there's the transformation animation times to consider, the magic doesn't last for very long and the the screen holds you back somewhat once you reach the edge of it (though you'll still be moving somewhat faster than usual), but I thought I'd throw it out in case it ends up being useful somewhere.
