Acmlm, please do a 100% run for this game, I think a lot of people would love to see it. I had to erase the SDA run because of the awful encoded H.264 quality (no offense Nate) and I dont want to download the 2gig high quality run. But Mr Votava did an excellent job, no doubt.

By 100% run, do you mean getting all the powerups and weapons, or just going through all 21 corridors (only 11 are required)? I also never played through the whole game before, so planning everything is harder, but that's what FAQ's/walkthroughs are for ... The game does seem to have good potential for a run, though, so I did some progress on it tonight: http://acmlm.cjb.net:2/emu/nes/fceu/fcs/guardianlegend-1.fcm (completed corridor 1)

Run desynchs very early in the opening stage. (Yes, I have the correct ROM - checksum matches and everything.)

I downloaded both the regular H.264 run and the 2 gig HQ H.264 run. The encoding seems to be as well done as possible - the run was captured from VHS, and at the higher quality it's very apparent that the poor visual quality is because of how it was recorded, not because of the encoding. For some less off-topic conversation, I'm not entirely certain a 100% run will be particularily entertaining to anyone except the people who have played the game before. I predict that improvements to speedrunning this game will come from improved combat techniques, and better route planning. The only glitch I ever came across playing this game on the console is the ability to walk through certain walls, which may save a bit of travel time (not the screen border walls, but other obstructions - moving up+right or down+left can pass you through vertical walls sometimes). I'm reasonably certain that the saber weapons are the highest damage output/second in the game, but I could be mistaken. There may be some benefits to using autofire with the sabers; I can't remember testing this. The The game may have some room for luck manipulation with enemy drops in the autoscroll levels, but since the things that can drop consist of blue chips, red chips, hearts, full health, and enemy erasers, the actual value of manipulating drops may be someone dubious - unless, of course, the purpose is to go through a corridor spamming the enemy eraser. Since it is in a couple occasions possible (through the use of shops, etc.) to acquire additional weapon upgrades beyond the 'max' power (which has no effect), a decision needs to be made on what a '100%' run means. Certainly, all of the optional corridors need to be beaten, and every weapon should be collected and upgraded to the maximum, but should redundant powerups be acquired, and should the pause trick be used to buy out every shop? Since enemy erasers are a consumable, is it necessary to pick up every EE in the Labyrinth?

So, wait, are you doing a "one hundred percent" run first just because the planning's easier than for an all-out speed run? Well, maybe the end result will help you plan for that, so I won't object.

Most of the planning for this run is to find out which weapons I should use, but that's usually not too hard to figure out ... My 100% run will do this: - Do all optional corridors - Beat all minibosses - Max out every weapon (but not extras and all shops, not sure about enemy erasers) - Get all score bonuses (if the last one is reachable, not sure how many points it takes) I also try to score as much as possible without wasting time, especially in the corridors where I shoot everything (almost) and even destroy as many projectiles as I can (which means I have to let enemies shoot them), so there's a lot of action at times ... I'm guessing it'll get even better as I progress and get through the harder levels with more powerful weapons. But this is going to be a long run, at least twice as long as a minimal run (I'd say a hour and half) ... I'm now in the middle of corridor 13 (area 3), after 23 minutes: http://acmlm.cjb.net:2/emu/nes/fceu/fcs/guardianlegend-2.fcm

This was recorded with version 0.98.15, so it might desync in other versions (I don't have 0.98.16 to test on) ...

Hm, it works here, but my connection was down for a while earlier (acmlm.cjb.net is hosted on my computer) ... try again now, I'll upload it somewhere if it still doesn't work for you.

Just watched what you have done so far. Its quite nice to watch, but it is striking me more as a walkthrough than a TAS right now. It seems sometimes that you don't cut corners as early as you can do, and sometimes you do not position yourself in the correct location several screens in advance (when you could). Also I have to question your choice to not get the forward lightsaber as early as possible, as it should be pretty useful in a TAS, and could probably cut down severely on the usage of the weapon select screen. However, if this run is just a planning run, then I would say you are getting somewhere, but I would not be able to vote yes for this if it was submitted.

(note: I realize this discussion is a few months old, but the other one is even older, and Acmlm's run is still a WIP, so...) Taking the route that gets the Multishot earlier defeats the Corridor 1 boss quicker, because the two saber weapons (Saber Laser and Cutter Laser) have a short invulnerability peroid associated with them because otherwise they'd be too powerful (damaging every frame). Neither the Multishot nor the basic pulse gun (nor any other projectile-based weapon in the game, for that matter) has this invulnerability period. In my any% run, I take the route south to get the Saber Laser (and a Red Lander, as it were) because I will not pass that way again; however, Acmlm is doing a 100% run, so no matter what, he knows he WILL HAVE TO collect it at some point, so the best option for him is to take the Multishot which, as I said, defeats the first corridor boss much more quickly.

1) please re-define this as im unsure what you mean by xtra's and shops... how do you max all without 'em? (unless you use the shop glitch but i think it would take to long to get the credits) 2) there are an infinite amount of score bonuses, or i think thats what i read from game faqs... it increases to a degree then just lets you keep getting them (as in once the max max health is reached each next score bonus just replenishes health)... if your only limiting your number of score bonuses so that you have reached the max health amount in the game then that would explain what you meant.

Life-up bonuses at: 30,000 100,000 500,000 1,000,000 and every 1 million afterwards I think the life max is 30. Not 100% sure though.

Max life is 32, if I remember right. I've heard that earlier versions of the game freeze up at 10 million points (as in, the game hangs if you go over 9999990)...I dunno if this has any truth to it. <_<

Hi People :) I'm trying to make a minimal-speedrun for the guardian legend. That means to play only the necessary corridor and adventure parts. At the moment, I'm through with corridor 2 after nearly 13 min. I aim for a fast time, a good shooting and to get hurt as less as possible. BTW, I began this run 3 days ago and its my first I've ever done too :) If you have the rom, you can watch my not completed run by using the .fcm file For recording, I used FCE Ultra 0.98.15 http://freenet-homepage.de/mcbain/TGL/TGL.fcm ciao EDIT: I updated the file - it ends now with the finish of corridor 3 and it's boss the big blue eye

Time for me to play Mr. Picky, because I played this game like crazy when I was a kid, and I attempted TAS'ing it but gave up. The first thing I noticed is that the very first boss was really unoptimized. I wish I could show you the small TAS I made of this game but I apparently deleted it, but I know for sure that the boss was killed much faster than that. It was roughly the same time as in Acmlm's WIP. And this was all without bothering with Frame Advance. Another minor thing is that you sometimes just stand still during times of waiting. Perhaps you could move or shoot rhythmically along with the music while you wait. Also, 51 for an undo count is kinda low. When I was attempting this game, I had well over 100 for JUST the first stage. I must say, though, that Corridor 3 was played very well, though the boss could probably be more optimized. I'm not trying to discourage you at all. In fact, I praise anyone for even attempting this game because there's so much randomness to it; knowing how much to shoot, deciding which weapon is best for which boss, and manipulating in general is very hard to do for this game.

hi :) Your both right, there are some parts in my run that could be better, but the problem is that I've noticed to late that there is this thread with Acmlms run in it. I just had the VHS-Version from gamearchives to compare and the knowledge that I (in the end of corridor 3) be 2 mins faster than that guy ... Btw, I think I had a bigger undo count, but it gone back by continuing the run, but I'm not sure =| but thanks for your thoughts, I will optimize the run and maybe start over again with the whole game. This is hard, but if it looks better, it should be worth it ciao :) EDIT: Ok, I've started the run over again - but it's just the first level. I hope its more entertaining now *g* In the "no action" phase I'm moving more around, till the endboss every shot is a hit and I need just 2 secs longer than Acmlm, but without getting hurt the problem with the undo-count by re-recording was, that I set the movie to "read only", so it deleted the old counts - so it should be something to 400 or 500. Next time I have a look on this, sry =/ http://freenet-homepage.de/mcbain/TGL/TGL_new.fcm
