I've finally started working on something again...namely, Castlevania 3. I can't think of any *big* improvements to the existing movies, but I'll be eliminating 2 Famtasia vids if I can finish this. I also want to make a Grant movie which covers the remaining levels that haven't been done yet (sunken city, etc.).
I don't know if it counts as "major", but you can cancel the delay from ending a jump by ending an attack on the same frame you touch the ground. I know it works well on the large delays from long falls, but the short delays from short falls needs to be tested. It'd be great if it does work; it'd probably save a frame or two on every single jump.

Unless the program is running for at least 5²²²²²²²²²² years, I have some doubt that it will surpass a human. Analyzing all possibilities can be pretty long in a +25 minutes long game :P

Right now I am considering running this game, Akumajou Densetsu (once known as Castlevania 3). By considering, I have already started it but I am not actually sure I will complete it unless someone absolutely wants it. Here's a WIP in which I complete the first 2 levels as a whole (I get Grant and reach the bottom of the Clock Tower) and I believe the first level is at least one second faster than any of the published CV3 runs (but I cannot really tell how much faster mine is): http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1443/Akumajou_Densetsu_%28J%29.fcm In this run I abuse a sort of trick in which if you get to the right pixel/frame of a surface near the edge and drop off you go much quicker but it always acts as if you fall from a great distance so I only use it at greater distances rather than all the time. The speed of it is much like the speed Simon falls at in Castlevania. Well any comments and criticism is much welcomed.

Hiya Vandal. Both of our current Castlevania 3 runs are famtasia runs, meaning, please go ahead and improve it/them because we are trying to get rid off every famtasia runs. I'll watch your WIP once I get home from work.

If this is a Grant run, it won't obsolete either of the famtasia runs (unless it's faster than the Sypha route, it may obsolete that). We'll just have three movies wheeee! In regards to the RUC, it's looking great, although the wobbling is annoying. I was wondering if you tried using the axe knight to damage boost up to the upper platform around frame 12100.

Yeah, I've tried that but it won't let you go through the floor all the way.

Alrighty then! Keep up the good work. I'm interested to see how different the levels become with Grant.

Just viewed your WIP. At around frame 15800, are you able to take a hit and land on the above platform? Edit: Same question goes for around frame 16500.

I absolutely believe it is not possible since in this Castlevania you cannot simply go through floors like in the first Castlevania. I believe it takes changing to the other character and some other techniques. Also besides going through the floor, it is not possible to land up that high when jumping at your peak while getting hit.

Alright, I have done another two set of levels: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1450/Akumajou_Densetsu_%28J%29%20WIP2.fcm You'll probably "think" you see a couple of errors but there is a reason for some of those moments when it looked like I could of did it faster (mostly for luck manipulation of certain enemies' position, hell maybe you won't notice).I really can't think of what else to say besides let me know what you think.

The only thing I wondered was if it was worth it to switch to Trevor for some of the bosses. It may take longer to kill the boss with Grant, but it takes an awful long time to switch twice. Overall it looks very good.

I feel it was necessary to change to Trevor for the bosses since Grant takes too long to get off his initial attack and using axes is not as fun as decimating the boss before they even know what happened. I think there is room for microscopic improvements but unfortunately I really am unwilling to go back and do anything of the sort. After all I think fighting the bosses with Trevor is much more appealing than watching Grant chuck anything and everything he has and having almost nothing to show for it and in the end I think it pretty much evens out in time.

This is a good point, it is more fun to watch Trevor dominate bosses. You could say that you are optimizing, but are ignoring time caused due to character switching. Ah well. I hope you continue this run, it's looking very good!

I might consider making another run in which as soon as I get Grant I change to him and only use him for the remainder of the game just to see if I gain or lose time on the whole run but would it be as entertaining, that is the question. Anyway, I have done another level (sorry it isn't two levels like the first WIPs): CVIII WIP3 In this level I tried to be as entertaining as possible while still being as quick as possible. I also (accidentally) found a way to jump through the spikes, that serve as a floor on one side and try to kill you on the other, which is good for time. But in some areas there was not much else I could do, mostly the stairs-places that hold anyone but Alucard back, and I definately took more time to optimize them just for good measure. I don't know if I'll post another WIP this morning, since I haven't even begun the next level, but I am sure I'll do another later in the day (since I sleep in until about 5:00 PM). Sorry there isn't a Savestate, I don't really know the best place to host files but I know of some that have too many pop-ups (megaupload for one and its waiting sucks to be quite honest); hope you can bare with it.

Looks nice, the time you save with Grant keeps adding up. Don't worry about making savestates; those people are whiners. Everyone can make their own as they watch the run (or use fast-forward).

Another Level Done I may have not promised this but here it is. There was quite a few places that Grant really pays off. It may look like I could have gone faster on the stream that makes you walk faster, right after the one that makes you go slow, but I timed it right and the path I chose is fastest and looks much more consistent and cool. I think this level came out real well with all the little shortcuts and the luck manipulation involved. Hope you enjoy this very short level (if I keep this up I'll be done before the month is over and who knows if this would be the fastest completed 30 minute TAS).

Once again I have completed Another Level. I think I need more feedback to see how I am doing, especially on the boss fights. On the boss fights I did take a look at the Famtasia runs (the more helpful one was the Alucard run since Trevor is used to fight the bosses, not sypha) and mine is 2 seconds slower because I have to walk under that big red demon twice, I think, limiting my attacks. If I didn't he would land on the platform from above and it would severely limit my attacks. So with that in mind it doesn't look bad at all.

"This" will be my last WIP before I submit this run. I think this level came out real well and I am satisfied with it. That's all I have to say.

Solid WIP. Should/can we compare your run with any of the Castlevania 3 runs? If so, how much ahead are you compared with any of the published run?

You could compare the levels on the Sypha Path (the levels up to the boss), the boss battles aren't very comparable when the odds are against you (motioning that Sypha has the upperhand with her dominating magic), and the first level is definately comparable and I believe I am ahead because of better luck manipulation even though it seemed unlikely that I could do that level faster since it looked as if it were optimized to death.

If this was your submission, I would say no because... STOP WITH THE GODDAMN TWITCHING!! Even Phil's runs had too much for my taste. Yours was pure overload.

Twitch as much as you want, I find it entertaining and voting no because someone "wobbles" is wrong.

Twitching once or twice is one thing, but man it's pure overkill in this run.

I didn't want them to just stand there, waiting; I wanted to keep them looking busy. The twitching, to me, is them trying to make their minds up or at least them looking/feeling confused (wtf, them feeling confused?). It really shouldn't be a problem unless your face is right up to the monitor, no offense intended.

I have finally taken the time to verify whether or not the Alucard route would be faster than the Sypha route for Grant. Well, with the little test run I did, comparing it to the currently published run, the Alucard route is slower by 40 seconds (comparing it to the one I just submitted, it's most likely about 80 or 90 seconds slower). Here is the Alucard Path for Grant. And Here is the Alleged Grant Path Just in case for those who are wondering what it may look like for Grant to be on another path. The test runs are relatively optimized, only frames that add up into seconds can probably be save. Also one of them will desync because they are not finished, I just go as far as when the paths sync up.
