I have been playing Sonic 2 for years. I grew up with the game as a kid but recently I've been trying to figure out how in the heck the pipes work in the Chemical Plant Zones. There are many places where a single entrance to a pipe will split into two different paths and what I need to know is how the game decides what path Sonic will take. Is this a random element or can the player control what path Sonic will take once he goes into the pipe? Anyone know or have an idea. Thanks. I just figured it out. But yes you are correct its the time even or odd.

Dr. Robotnik uses a water based computer. When the computer wants a 0, it pushes the water one direction. When the computer wants a 1, it pushes the water in another direction. On a more serious note, I'm pretty sure it's affected by which direction you hold.

No, it's based on whether the timer is even or odd. See, Eggman runs his plant on 0.5Hz AC hydroelectricity!

That's really interesting because when I was a kid, I played that game so much that I had a consistent route through that level which always felt very rhythmic and I'd always go the same way through the first pipe. :)

I didn't even care about that, the only thing I was noticing was the music!

Same, I always thought it was based on the d-pad!
