He almost sounds like he'd much sooner forget about his role.

Btw, there's a video on bronies reacting to that video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O3tAhQVU3k

The first one was entertaining. That one was uncomfortable.

I agree. One can't reasonably enjoy MLP without having a sense of humor about it. The original video had some really funny comments, even from the kids who were repulsed by the show. I'm a little disappointed by the negative reaction to it from the bronies (though I suspect it's the usual vocal minority/silent majority situation). So some teens somewhere have a negative preconception about a cartoon aimed at little girls but embraced by adults as well? I'll grab the pitchfork, you get the torches!

And now we have this. Further personal evidence that canonizing Derpy was an all around bad move.

I'm not very familiar with the series (I've only seen the first 7 episodes), so I have to ask; why is there so much insane anger (and even death threats) in response to that innocent little clip?

"Derpy Hooves" is a character that, before that episode, was exclusively a background character that didn't speak and wasn't named. She had crossed eyes (some say it was originally an animation error, some say it was an intentional easter egg) and appeared overall fairly clumsy and awkward, in a sweet and humorous way. The community created their own character out of this, including a peculiar love for muffins, a job as a "mailmare" and a daughter. She's really popular, almost rivaling the main characters. Supposedly, the creators has acknowledged that Derpy was popular in the community and has included her in several episodes just for the hell of it. This is more pronounced in season 2. In "The last roundup" she is at last referred to by name as "Derpy" (the name she was supposed to have was supposedly "Ditzy Doo", and she is referenced as this in "Winter Wrap Up" but not visible at the time) and given a voice. Reception was kind of mixed but mostly positive. A few days ago the episode mysteriously disappeared from iTunes and a lot of Derpy merchandise was suddenly unavailable. There was a lot of concern that that some people found the character offensive and Hasbro had decided to chicken out and remove Derpy from the show. Come yesterday(I think, not very long ago though) the episode reappeared with this edited scene. Original version of the scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCUT-KHWeec Changes that I noticed: Name removed (that part of the dialogue sounds really awkward now), Eyes underped, voice changed to more feminine (I can kind of understand this as Tabitha herself has said she mistakenly thought the character was male. I didn't really like the original voice that much either, but it is decisively worse now IMO).
Even the best player is limited by the speed of his fingers, or his mind's ability to control them. But what happens when speed is not a factor, when theory becomes reality?

In the scene from episode 1 where she's first seen most of the time she's a background character with half her face obscured by various foreground props. There's one cut though where you can see her whole face and whoops, it turns out her eyes were completely out of whack. So I'd say that either it was either an intentional inside joke or just being too lazy to fix an obstructed fault; later someone reused it for a different cut and didn't notice the eyes out of whack. Or maybe it was intentional by someone being sneaky. Either way it's a bit of laugh at someone animator's expense. Fans saw it and thus came her ascension from Background Character #6 to a fan favourite. Putting her name into the show was a nice gesture to the online community but I still think making her talk was a mistake. Apparently the voice actress was a bit confused as to Derpy's gender and probably tried to make him (!) sound endearing but comes off as somehow mentally handicapped rather than simply clumsy which is probably what set the whole thing off. Personally I'm not against the voice change to make her sound, uhh, "better", but dropping the name and fixing the eyes is kind of a kick to the whole reason the scene exists. Now you have a drawn out bit which only explains why the building in the background is in shambles plus a whole bunch of filler in which a nameless background character gets a surprising number of lines. So what you have is the show creators trying to do something nice for the fans and then having it explode in everyone's face when someone uses their privilege to rewrite that bit right out of the proverbial history books. Thus, anger. ---- Aside: as I understand it the first ~15 episodes had been animated and submitted for airing at once. After Derpy first made internet headlines the animation team redid her eyes in future episodes and she can be seen derp'd as her normal appearance starting in episode 16.

People seem really upset by Derpy's voice change and the overall editing of that scene, but I've never heard anyone complain about the lines they gave her, which I thought were terrible. They turn her from a somewhat clumsy but endearing character into an oblivious oaf who actively destroys anything she touches. I guess I hadn't thought about it much, but I never really thought of Derpy as being unintelligent, just a bit overzealous and careless. With her voice and dialogue, she reminds me of Detective Homer Simpson. While I appreciate the gesture they were trying to make, I wouldn't mind seeing Derpy relegated to being a background character once more.

Honestly, I like the new version of the scene. The new voice is unquestionably better and fits very well with her being ditzy (SEE WHAT I DID THERE), and the eyes are still a bit uneven even if not as pronounced as they were. They didn't actually call her by any other name, so it's not like they said that she's definitely not named that. Me prefering the name Ditzy notwithstanding. (fun fact: Before that episode aired, I had been saying that I didn't think they'd get away with using the name Derpy. So, in a roundabout way, I was right.) I don't actually care about the character, and I'm definitely not seeing anything like her being RUINED in this new version of the scene. So just like after the episode aired, I get to stand at the side and be amused by the fandom freaking out about it. Though it's already starting to get tired. Funny for a day or so, then just stupid. But the reasoning behind the change seems sketchy. Not a great fan of the kind of Orwellian Retcon they actually did. So on that level, I don't like the change.

Myself, I don't even find the new scene that badly made either. I'm glad Ashleigh redid Rainbow Dash's lines as well, and Derpy's new voice is okay too. It's just a shame such a tiny thing had to generate such a massive shitstorm, not once, but twice, and, personally, I'd prefer it if we just accept it the way it is and move on. In any case, the original's still on my hard drive.

I listened to the new version, and I guess I really don't like it compared to the original. I'm not gonna rage against anybody, but it is a bit cringe-worthy now.

Does anyone have an idea why they changed it? Executive meddling perhaps?

I believe basic economics dictates that it is more prudent to err strongly on the side of caution when controversy arises. (I call it basic economics in an effort to deflect any requests that I explain it at this hour. Nevertheless, I think it's fairly evident that large organizations are far more risk-averse than individuals.)

There was actually a petition somewhere about people who found the presence of "lol retard" humor to be inappropriate in this show. And I agree! No one would blink an eye if it were in, say, Family Guy. I could go at length talking about this, but not now. I tried finding that petition, but searching "derpy hooves petition" just pulls up a bunch of other petitions to restore the scene as it originally was.

By changing it they are only drawing attention to it. This is similar to the so-called Streisand effect.

After reading through this thread, the only slightly objective point I've come across explaining the show's popularity (to the more adult audience) is that it's appealing to children and adults alike. However, there are several shows I can think of off the top of my head that do the same thing: most of the old Nicktoons (like Rocko and even Rugrats), The Powerpuff Girls, and shows like Sesame Street, which my son watches and I find myself laughing at more than I would have thought. That being said, there's no fanatical following of any of these shows of the MLP magnitude that I am aware of. I'm not trying to stir up trouble, maybe just more reasons for why people like the show so much, because the humor or content appealing to an adult audience can't be the only thing.

In the end, does it really matter why it's so popular?

There you go Also, it's only three hours. They changed the schedule. Hence the HD versions only come up now.
