Super Mario 64 DS was released in 2004 for the Nintendo DS. The game is a remake of Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64, bearing some new features on its storyline, gameplay and graphics. Unlike Super Mario 64, this time there are 4 playable characters, but only Yoshi is available at the start.

Glitches and Tricks

  • Outside the castle glitch: when using a slidekick, if you do it correctly with a certain angle (glitching inside the castle’s wall as you are entering the water), the character is pushed down to the water floor, bypassing the water-entry check into swim animation. However, getting too close to the water’s surface will trigger the swimming animation, making running to the moat door our only option. MKDasher found a new method where if you press A or B 4 frames before glitching, you’ll always go to the water floor no matter your position. This is slower than the normal method but due to disregarding position it can become faster situationally.
  • No input: this trick consists of not pressing any direction. It's useful while the character's speed is above normal top speed, since speed goes down slower than pressing any direction.
  • Standstill run: holding the dash button without pressing any direction button makes the character run staying still. After doing it, pressing a direction would make the character run faster than normal speed and gain extra height on jumps. The trick is useful when you need to wait for something to happen or to reach platforms that would be unreachable with normal jumps. It's used at unavoidable wait times in BitS, in the Bowser battle to gain extra height while re-grabbing and in the first star to reach the platform.
  • Dialogue glitch: it works by talking to toad/bunny when the game would be pushing you out of its sprite, making you go through boundaries with the right position.
  • Endless stairs skip: we have no accurate explanation, but doing a slidekick into the corner of the 2nd step of the stairs will make you launch high from where you can fall directly into BitS.

Possible improvements

Glitching Mario’s 8-star door to finish the game with a single star; looks possible and hasn't been tested enough.

Special Thanks

We would like to thank cwitty for his great work put into finding useful RAM addresses, without which this TAS would’ve been much weaker.

I’m currently working on hacking the f*k out of the first bunny glitch, to get the easiest possible outcome for TASing it, and see if with that we can improve the swimming a little bit, if it turns out we can’t save more we’ll submit what MKDasher got already

This run is fantastic. Different enough from the n64 version to really stand out on its own, and it's nice to see that the game is still breakable even with all the 'fixes' the remake included. Is the run-through-water glitch from the beginning possible in the N64 version, or is it due to the physics changes of the game/Yoshi?
First a movie gets submitted, and ends up accepted despite breaking rules other runs have been rejected for. And when I vote less than spectacularly on this movie, I become the victim of harassment and threats. Yay, favoritism.

I answered that some posts back, but basically that glitch has been known to SM64 TASers for years so they’d have used it if it worked in SM64 I got all the cheats together and TAS’d half the swimming, I can’t be sure of anything as I’m not comparing it but it looks a ton better than what we had O_o hopefully I save something (and hopefully it’ll synch) edit: saved 22 frames over MKDasher’s latest effort :) I love hacking… OH GOD LET’S HOPE IT SYNCHS

Fantastic work, I really wondered what kind of glitch will be used in contrast with the 64 version... and I was very surprised. I can't vote yet but it's all YES =)

I finally got some time to watch an encode (though it was of an older version). Thank you so much, Mister Epic! Even without the latest improvements, I'm quite impressed! This run feels somewhat like the 16-star runs of old, but it has a nice polish. I liked seeing Yoshi's gameplay and the extra stage you have to play to unlock Mario. It was also interesting to see the Bowser stages done without any BLJs. This run, in my opinion, offers enough differences to be published along with the N64 runs of the game. I vote Yes.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

This is a nice change up from the N64 version. The levels are different. I would like to see a 100% run someday in the future. I always enjoy watching the brothers and Wario get into a fight before they can even walk into the castle.

New standard encodes, from the latest improvement, are now available! Stream Download - Alternate link (132 MB) EDIT: I made the Stream's player a bit bigger, so it becomes easier to seek.

Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmCHViCZ_h0 Scoured this thread for a Youtube link and could not find one. If I read your earlier comments correctly Mister Epic then posting your encode to Youtube is OK. Posted as Unlisted for others like me looking to watch the submission, will remove if anyone has a problem with that. Yes vote from me. Entertaining, very different from N64 run and some great glitches.

You can keep that unlisted upload up until MKDasher and ALAKTORN upload ToonLinkGaming's official YouTube encode.

Sweet, a Youtube link =) Yes vote, I loved plain Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64, and this version is on par with that. New glitches, new worlds, good old Mario action =)

Just watched it... this run takes me back to the SM64 runs from the pre-0-star days. Hopefully this game will end up having runs that are just as refined optimized as its N64 counterpart. Yes vote here.

I am still clueless about what suggested screen should I upload. I took some to see if you guys like any of them: Maybe ALAKTORN wants to suggest another ones after, I don't know.

I like this one the most. It's glitchy, funny and not obvious, prompting the use to watch to run to understand. Also, it clearly shows it's a mario game =P

I was waiting for an encode to watch this, and it's looks brilliant! Great to see the fruition of your quickly-made, entertaining and optimised work, I looked forward to watching this ever since Alaktorn said you two were taking a break from mario kart to do this :)

Speaking of Mario Kart, this game really looks to me like Super Mario 64 redone with Super Mario Kart's graphics engine.
