FractalFusion: Please note that the emulator uses VBA v24m svn422, which may have different timing than other VBA versions even among GBA games.
This run is known to desync on v22 and v23, and possibly earlier versions.

This is an improvement of 2001 frames of my first TAS of this game.

Game objectives / info

  • Emulator used: vba-v24m-svn422
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Pacifist mode ( Only kill the two foremen in Level 2 and 7 to continue )

About the game

  • Running is faster than walking
  • Falling is slower than jumping
  • Asterix max speed is 687
  • Obelix max speed is 611
  • Obelix need 31 frames to reach his max speed
  • Asterix need 35 frames to reach his max speed

Tricks Used

  • When you press the "sprint button" (L or R) and jump in any direction you reach immediatly the max speed of your character.
  • To finish the rugby level it requires to score 4 touchdown so the transformation is not necessary.
  • In the Bank level you can fall down the ladders when pressing Down + Jump (A).

Memory Adresses

04000018 : Camera X postion 03000376 : Speed

Other comments

I hope i have improve the entertainement in this movie. I didn't find how to climb the stairs more faster in the second level of Hispania.

DarkKobold: Judging

DarkKobold: Removing pacifist branch (as it is fastest), and accepting.
Thanks for the help, FF!

I like it better than the old one. Better optimization overall and better entertainment, especially in the sport stages (I really like the slow scoot to the line at 14:00 in the encode). And thank you for the temporary encode! Yes vote.

Indeed, the old one was very good, this one is even better. I wonder, though, if you can skip some yellow coins (you seem to collect many of them), as they take up some time in the score tally at the end of the levels. Not a big deal, but might require a "Aims for in-game time instead of real-time" tag (like Sonic games). Unless it takes up more time to dodge them rather than count them in the score in which case this objection is invalid. Very strong yes vote.

This was pretty entertaining all the way through. Nothing super-amazing, but I imagine it'd be a lot of fun to someone familiar with the game. I particularly liked what you did with the Olympic events. Yes vote.

Thanks for your comments. In the first run i try to take as little as possible the yellow coins probably why it was less fun. I decided to make it more entertaining by sacrificing a few frames.

Arg I liked the wait at the start of the olympic race, I liked the wait at the end of the olympics race. But I was secretely hoping all along that you would run side by side with them at some point : / Anyway easy yes vote too.

Does the optimal route invlove pacifism too? If so, then it would be redundant to add a "Pacifist" branch.

This looks much better than the last submission. I refrained voting from that one but it would have likely been a meh from me. @Lil_Gecko: I was thinking the same thing! I thought he would have run side by side or as close as possible at one point. This one however looks like it will get a yes from me. I still like what you did to make the olympic events more entertaining.

This is what I was thinking.
Sage advice from a friend of Jim: So put your tinfoil hat back in the closet, open your eyes to the truth, and realize that the government is in fact causing austismal cancer with it's 9/11 fluoride vaccinations of your water supply.

I am not sure if this is the optimal route but the one I use, beat enemies would make me lose time yes.

The encode has a kind of distracting blur to it, by the way. Hopefully we can have a better encode when this is published.

Isn't it already enough that Asterix has magic potion, now he has to have TAS superpowers on top of that? :P

No sound effect to signify the start of race in the olympic event? And the big guys cheat, they begin the running a few frames before the go-signal is given. Apparently, one should observe them rather than the arm that signals the go.

A funny glitch I found in the second level: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBJEq_9qNZc Voted yes to this funny run. I love this game and this TAS does a good job of doing it justice.
