Tasv5 - Contra (J) "Pacifist" in 9:29.08 by Soig&zyr2288.

Emulator used: FCEU 0.98.28. Fcm was converted to fm2 by FCEUX 2.1.5.

This run beats published run 412 frames. About 6.87 seconds.

Imformations about each area.pl

Area 1 is same as published run.
Area 2 has a fewer improvements. Due to the way to fight against boss quicklier.
Area 3 I use full double-floor jump. And better than Tasv4.
Area 4 I use a bug at the 2nd boss.
Area 5 I use a bomb's bug. Make it blow up 1 frame later. And I save several frames to go through the place.
Area 6 save lots of frames! I use a better method to go through a place. And this saved time helped me to save more than 100 frames later.
Area 7 and Area 8 is similar as published run.

Special Thanks

Thank zyr2288 very much. He gave me his improved run. There were so many improvements. Such as area 3, area 4 and area 5.And I did a faster run.
In fact, I finished this run one month earlier. I improved the entertainment and today I finished it.
I cost one month to improve the entertainment because I'm a senior 3 student and I have to study hard to pass the coming College Entrance Examination. So I don't have much time to do it. Please forgive me that.

feos: HD encode.

DarkKobold: While shooting at enemy shields doesn't kill them, it was probably somewhat bad form. However, it doesn't break the goals of the movie; and it isn't enough to kill this improvement. Accepting.

Velitha: Processing...

Encoding HD.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

I have a requisition for encoder. Contra has a secret message at the end of game. (After credits.) And encoder must press Start+Select after the plane leaves the island so that this message will appear. I hope encoders can help me to make it come true. Thanks a lot!

I don't know if I'm allowed to add input after movie end. At what exact frame do I need to press Start+Select? BTW, you can upload the fixed movie to microstorage.

I see no problem with an easter egg like that. As long as it's documented in the movie description, I don't think anybody would have a problem with it.

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php Yours doesn't work and it's a bit in CHINESE, while I'm a bit Russian.

Nice going! The style in this run is quite good. Highlights for me include: * Dancing / firing to music in the base levels * Shooting the machinegun in Stage 5 to imitate the snow * Shooting at a guy in Stage 7 and missing him twice from opposite sides The technique is also quite good. Going into the wall in Stage 6 was quite surprising. I also liked how the miniboss in Stage 8 worked. Yes vote. For a screenshot suggestion, I suggest somewhere around frame 10300, when the hero is jumping between two fire shots from the third boss.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

Yes vote. I like 6th level's boss fight. Fast and without any movement from him.

This run is deep. Bill "Mad Dog" Rizer understands that soldiers on the other side are simply doing their job, attempting to stophim. He acknowledges that they are just doing what they are told. He spares those who are not in charge. War is ugly, Bill Rizer is the shining beacon of light. Perhaps the Mad Dog is the Wise Dog.
Sage advice from a friend of Jim: So put your tinfoil hat back in the closet, open your eyes to the truth, and realize that the government is in fact causing austismal cancer with it's 9/11 fluoride vaccinations of your water supply.

Very nice improvment, voting yes of course. By the way, out of curiousity, what it says at the end of the credits? (the easter egg)

As a true pacifist, shouldn't you wait for those soldiers in levels 2 and 4 to run away instead of killing them with the blast wave from core explosion? Yes, I'm aware that new soldiers usually come by, but you could manipulate them and find safe moments to blow up rooms without killing soldiers. Unless you do that I can't call this a pacifist run.

Well, Bill Rizer wanted to save them all, but ContraHQ had different plans. This game sure has deep plot. :D

Here's the way I read it, after transliterating most of the katakana into hiragana/kanji: おろかな地球人よ これで「レッドファルコン」が 全滅したとでも思っているのか 地球前線基地は失ったが すでに次の手は打ってある わが「レッドファルコン」は 永遠に不滅なるぞ・・・・・ Foolish earthlings. Do you truly believe Red Falcon has been completely wiped out? We may have lost our front-line base on Earth but our next move has already been made. We, Red Falcon, shall become forever immortal...

I like the run a lot. Interesting shooting tricks including near miss shots. I wonder what the run would look like if these tricks were performed in a real life missions. They would possibly scare many enemies into surrendering. Yes vote!

So remind me again why Contra runs use the J version?

Objection: When you blow up the robot thingies in level 2 the explosion kills troops who are standing near it. A true pacifist run should wait until those troops have disappeared offscreen so they don't die from the blast.

Better graphics, shorter intro, otherwise identical.

That's what I'm talking about: this run didn't really improve currently published pacifist run it terms of its main goal (to kill less than before), it only did same things faster (which is not impressive, because it's still slower than non-pacifist speedrun). Do we need two almost identical Contra speedruns published? If you call this pacifist run, you should redo levels 2 and 4. I guess I have to vote No to stress my opinion.

I think the discord happens because you define pacifist as preventing enemy deaths, if possible, while the runs have so far aimed for not actively killing enemies. The latter is easy to conform to, the former... well, not so. It's ambiguous and somewhat pointless, because in this case the best way to prevent the deaths of the entire island's worth of enemies is to game over at the last boss.

In topic of previous version I wrote: "Is it real "pacifist" playing in 2&4 levels that you destroy enemies with explosion wall?" AnS wrote:

Whether it is necessary us to consider, what they have been destroyed directly not by the protagonist?
