Less shitty encode of act 1-2 uploaded to megaupload, link in OP. Act 3 should be done in 1-2 days or so, depending on how much i work on it.

So, i'm at an area where after an hour of trying, i am unable to skip a fight. I can manipulate where the fight occurs, and what enemies show up, but i can't get through the area without fighting anything. This isn't unusual, but for the first time now, the fight occurs right at the beginning of the area, and if i die to it, i can get through without another. Dying here would save 2-3 seconds (and probably a few more throughout the run if i do again). I have no idea if the extra exp would help or hurt me*, and money drops are unlikely to make any difference at all. Anyone have any thoughts on this? If it matters, it takes 10 seconds from the time i enter the area until i respawn from dying. *Enemies, including bosses scale with my level, and i don't get any stronger with a higher level, except when it allows me to equip stronger weapons. I do need to fight a certain amount of random battles to get certain levels before certain bosses, but i have have already fought enough, and there will definitely be more fights i can't avoid later that i will need to fight, so i think i think the extra exp may end up hurting me more than helping, but i can't be sure, and even if it does, it's unlikely to cost more than a few seconds.

I would think it would be easier to skip the battle and proceed without it, then later go back to that point if it turns out you need the experience it would have provided (unlikely). I take it that circumstances prevent you from using a Smoke Bomb for this fight? (I don't exactly know what fights are smokeable or not, I tend not to skip random fights.) (Also note that there are some fights, in both stories, that can be 'skipped' by simply running through to the other end, as they're static to an area and not truly random.)
First a movie gets submitted, and ends up accepted despite breaking rules other runs have been rejected for. And when I vote less than spectacularly on this movie, I become the victim of harassment and threats. Yay, favoritism.

Skipping it will almost certainly be faster. The issue is whether it's worth spending 10 seconds dying to save 2-3 seconds off a run that will last more than an hour. Smoke bombs can be used for anything but bosses, but they are in very limited supply, so if i use one, i'll just have an extra fight to fight later, and i won't have such an option to skip those fights. The only fights that can be skipped like that are the ones that start immediately upon entering the area.

Then, I guess go ahead and fight it. If you save only two seconds from skipping the fight, then at least fighting it instead gets you more Mon for another smoke bomb.

Quick testing shows a difference of -209 frames, 9 mon, and enough exp to bring me from a little over 3/4 of the way to level 5 to just a sliver short of level 5. Neither option was optimized, but i can probably speed up dying more than fighting, because i had to wait 4 seconds before the enemy first attacked, and by manipulating different enemies i think i can speed it up by 2, maybe even 3 more seconds. If i can save 4-6 seconds, it will definitely without a doubt be faster to die, even if i eventually end up getting an extra smoke bomb by fighting, which there's no guarantee will even happen. edit: an hour of trying to optimize it, and turns out i could not improve dying by more than 4 frames, but managed to speed up fighting by 105 frames. At which point, honestly, even if it is slower after considering the exp+9 mon, it looks a hell of a lot better to not die, so i'm going with that. Act 3 should be done by tomorrow.

Link to video I almost wish i could include it in the run, lol. edit: upon further investigation, i CAN do it without losing any time, ahaha. If i can manage to manipulate a smoke bomb drop from a group including a white ninja, i'll do it.

Had nothing else to do all day, act 5 is done. .dtm: http://www.mediafire.com/?jzppfvtyi5tn9ry Link to video http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QJNSJ7TD This is the first boss to demonstrate anything really unusual. Not only do i take damage, despite my max hp being 1, i also manage to jump around a dozen times without landing, staying airborne for nearly 30 seconds. I actually could have equipped a much stronger sword at level 8 for this boss, but i would have needed an extra 1 str, which short of restarting the entire game, i could only get by forging 2 blades, which i don't have enough spirit for. There's some food in a house i could have gotten, but then i could not get the 2 smoke bomb drops right after that, so that would have been slower. It sucks, because i past an accessory that adds str earlier in the run, and could have gotten it for iirc 100 frames or so, and it would have saved probably 10-20 seconds, but i'm not redoing more than half of the run at this point, and even then, those two smoke bombs (i didn't manipulate them, they just happened to drop; i have not been able to manipulate drops at all) means it probably wouldn't even be faster in the long run anyway. Not looking forward to act 6. The boss requires massive amounts of luck manipulation. When i did it on shura before, i had to fight it 3 times because of desyncs. My times were 4, 5, and 8 minutes. Sub 2 minutes should be possible <.<

This movie requires to be placed in both the "Takes damage to save time" and "Takes no damage", because it manages to take hits of 0 damage. That was very impressive!

Well, if Rog finds a way to include that funny death-level glitch, it won't really be "takes no damage" anymore, either. ...But it'd be a bit awkward to have an "uses death for entertainment purposes" category without it being seen as a time-waster, either, hehe. ...Either way, it should be reasonable to finish the run (just two acts to go!), submit it, then just take a break and go through it again later, knowing what you know now, to see if you can trim off a couple minutes through optimizing things like battles fought for experience/drops, sidetracks for food and accessories, that sort of thing.

I personally wouldn't object if Rog did another run with Kisuke! Would like to see what he can offer :)

Will you do the Total Pandemonium after the main story? It's the most awesome fight in the entire game and I'd love to see a TAS run of this!

Suddenly i no longer want to do that. Actually, i think i have enough smoke bombs to avoid all fights for the rest of the game now, so i don't really have a choice now.

3 to go, and 6 is going to take forever.

Experience is very difficult to optimize, because there's really no way to tell how many fights i will need to fight. At least one of the fights i could not avoid so far i am 100% certain is avoidable (actually i probably smoke bombed the fight i'm thinking of, but that still wastes time, not to mention the smoke bomb), and i suspect a large amount of others are too; i simply couldn't do it, no matter what i did, given the state of the rng at the time. And i made sure that even if i could avoid it, it would take longer to do so than to just fight/smoke bomb it. The rng is very difficult to work with in this game, and it doesn't help that i can't see it. Avoiding most battles is trivial, and usually only takes a few seconds, depending mostly on how long it was since i last save stated before it comes up, but then every so often i get non-forced battles, that i just can't seem to avoid, i can only manipulate them into different enemies or slightly different places. And i know, some, if not all of these, can be avoided, i just can't do it. I don't know if it requires doing something different 2+ areas in advance (many fights will be locked in as soon as you enter an area, and cannot possibly be avoided, except by either varying movement right before entering it, or by leaving and coming back), or what, i don't know. If someone figured it out, they could probably improve my time by a few minutes. And again, i still haven't managed to manipulate drops. I doubt i'll do kisuke's storyline. I may consider it at a (much) later date, but for now, i have no intention of doing it. I've had a ton of fun doing this run so far, but i would like to move on to something new once i'm done with momohime.

Kisuke's story is... shall we say, less favorable towards TASing. Its bosses are much more difficult/annoying to fight, his dungeons are usually longer with more "battle-as-soon-as-you-enter" rooms, etc. Obviously, it would be really nice to have a Kisuke run for the sake of completeness, but I think Rog has the right idea of focusing on Momohime's side of things first.

Eh, i wouldn't really say that. Boss difficulty isn't really a bad thing in a tas. And starting a battle only takes about a second, so those rooms don't really add much time. Certainly they are far faster than fighting, or even using a smoke bomb. Really, i'd like to see a kisuke run, but i'm just not interested in doing it myself any time soon. Now that dolphin doesn't suck, i want to give pikmin another try once i finish this run. Maybe i'll come back and do kisuke after that.

Total pandemonium is either going to be incredibly awesome, or horribly boring. Not really sure which. Expect it soon. edit: not nearly as awesome/boring as i thought :( i was expecting to 1 shot everything with nio bracelets, but alas, normal enemies still have 2k+ hp, and hit me for 3k+ even when fought at level 16. Which means i have to actually try for this, which means i'm not finishing it tonight.

Holy shit. I expected this boss to take 2 weeks because of how much it relies on luck. Instead, i've been working on it for maybe 30 minutes, and he's down to his last health bar, has eaten me twice (i do about 4-5x more damage while inside his stomach), and he's done literally nothing but stand around while i attacked so far. With any luck, act 6 will be done shortly. After that, act 7 and 8 are both simple enough, and shouldn't take more than one or two days each. edit: managed to finish at around frame 182,300. The last health bar took longer than the first 3. Not sure how much i can really improve that, but i can probably shave off at least a few seconds, with better manipulation. I don't think i can get him to stop attacking altogether, but it's pretty easy to get him to use different attacks, allowing me to attack easier/more often. edit2: looks like i could get him to stop attacking. Saved 2.4k frames. Encode coming in a few hours, then i'm going right on to act 7.

Is there some sort of "Can't die if at full health, instead set to 1HP" feature in this game? How do you keep your max HP set to 1?

Holding A while in the air when you get hit (or if you get knocked into the air, or in very rare circumstances, it can be done while on the ground, but only with very precise timing), you won't take any damage at all, so long as your blade doesn't break. Or rather, you'll take damage, but then instantly recover it.
