Post subject: Spyro and Crash Bandicoot PS2 TASes?

Greetings ) Since the age of about 2, my love for Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon haven't stopped growing. Always been a fan of speedrunning them, playing them for nostalgic purposes, and 100% runs of the games. I've collected them all, and still have them to this day. About 2 years ago, I discovered TASes and TASVideos, and one of the first things that came to mind was "Are there any Crash or Spyro TASes?". When I found some of the older ones, I instantly fell in love with the concept. I suppose I've bored you enough already with my life story, so I'll get to the point. Seeing some Spyro and Crash games TASed for PS2 would be a nice sight, and would be fairly popular because they're pretty popular games. These games are [Spyro PS2 Games] (In order of Release) - Spyro Enter the Dragonfly (2002) - Spyro A Hero's Tail (2004) There is a small series called "The Legend of Spyro", which aren't really worth playing at all. Wouldn't bother listing them because I wouldn't be interested in watching them. [Crash PS2 Games] (In order of Release) - Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex (2001) - Crash Nitro Kart (2003) [Single Player Campaign only][Time Trials?] - Crash Twinsanity (2004) - Crash Tag Team Racing (2005) [Single Player Campaign only][Time Trials?] - Crash of the Titans (2007) - Crash Mind over Mutant (2008) I'd love to give these games a shot myself, but with no TAS experience what-so-ever, I couldn't imagine interesting, let alone publishable results. Tell me what you think, or whether you'd actually be interested in TASing one of these games! I look forward to reading your input on this topic )

Ps2 tases are not going to happen anytime soon. By the way, tasing really isn't terribly hard, if you're willing to work at it. The hardest thing involved is typically having the patience to actually make sure everything is done well.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, there is a youtuber (http://www.youtube.com/user/koeiprogenitor1) that REGULARLY TASes PS2 games. It's one of those things that I need to be taught to be good at, and my patience is non-existent haha D I'm saying that I've used emulators in the past, I've tried TASing, but nothing publishable has ever occurred from it. It's one of those things I'd LOVE to do, but don't have the patience for ( I've even experimented with TASing Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex, but doing so on a dud laptop like the one I've got is beyond pointless. Maybe I should start smaller with a GBA game or something? )

There's no way his methods are up to the tasvideos standards. There is no stable ps2 rerecording emulator.

He's achieving the fastest time possible, he's not using cheats/mods/hacks in any way, shape or form, so how are his methods not up to "tasvideo standards"? I apologise if I sound aggressive, wasn't intended to be read in such a way, but nevertheless, I was curious.

At a guess? He could be playing with minimal save states, and recording video for everything, and splicing it together. I know this has been done for ps2 games before. It works ok if you just want a video to post on youtube, but breaks at least a 100 different tasvideos rules, and also makes it impossible to optimize to the level that is really required for a good tas.

The main standard that TASVideos requires you to meet is that your run has to be stored as a sequence of controller inputs, which can then be used by another person to replicate the run. This requires the emulator you're using to be very stable, in the sense that it has to do exactly the same thing every time given the same sequence of inputs. Otherwise, when the third party tries to replicate your run, the emulator will "desynch" -- something will go subtly wrong, like a jump that was originally just barely long enough will fall short -- and the run will fail. Evidently PS2 emulators aren't up to that standard yet. You can still make videos of PS2 TASes like rog described. Bisqwit made a TAS of Chrono Chross well before we had a stable PSX emulator by simply recording every frame of the TAS as he made it and splicing them together once it was complete. And I'm sure plenty of us would like to see such TASes made. They just wouldn't be publishable here because they wouldn't be verifiable.

Thanks for explaining, I have a full understanding of what rog meant. This thread would still be good to keep up for future TASers, of course once the PS2 Emulator (rr) is stable. This would just be pitching the idea for them to greatly expand upon. Does anyone know anything about the current (as of today) development of PS2 emulator stability? are we far away or fairly close to having a decent emulator up for download? Ahh, that'd be nice :')

I disagree to record a ps2 emulator the "F12" button does the recording with lag obviously but it won't in final playback. Yes there isn't a fully functional way but I was talking about the recording part of it. Now back to Crash and Spyro for Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex slide jumps are the fastest mode of movement compared to slide-spinning (which doesn't work) Twinsanity you can break the game to finish it quickly :D

I noticed that sliding/skidding was indeed the fastest method of travel until the "dash" ability is unlocked, but an interesting trick is to Skid at the first possible frame you can skid again after a skid! May sound silly, but it is indeed the fastest way to travel. It's been far too long since I've played Twinsanity, and I remember little to no glitches in the game. Spikestuff, what kind of glitches do you know in the game? Sequence breaking glitches?

I specifically said rerecording. Obviously you can dump audio and video.

The keep on sliding technique is quite annoying in RTA obviously tas it's simple I cannot remember many only 1 where you can skip from N. Sanity Beach to Outside of N.gin's boat but I cannot find the video :(

I'm aware that it's more difficult in a casual speedrun, and of course it'd be easier in a TAS. Only thing that would bother me is, you don't get the dash ability until you defeat Cortex, so that's a lot of repetitive skidding, and that'd get old quick, considering theres like 30 levels. (still have to do them all, whether its any% or 100%)

Warped is an interesting game to watch being TASed. I'm talking about the 'moving left and right really quickly after a jump' trick. Assuming that's how its executed xD He doesn't have the dash ability in the link I sent you, its a VERY fast and useful trick because it vastly shortens travel time. would be nice to see a TAS using this technique throughout D

I have been running hero's tail for quite some time now, I would really like to tas this eventually, once there's a proper working emulator. I have a route, and the current record for the game, but I wish more people ran this game because of how glitchy it actually is. Currently you are able to skip into the 2nd boss, and the final boss itself. I guess I may post a list of glitches which cuts the game in half. Glitches - Zombie: Die on a moneybags shop pad, then open the shop pad as sparx goes away. This glitch has very strange effects on the bosses, I still need to test the gnasty gnorc boss door with the glitch. Also, all of the enemies do not have any effects on you. - Swim in the Air: This plays a huge role in the run itself, this is mainly what cuts the run in half. In the first hub I use swim to get a few light gems out of the way, because I need to get 45 by the end of the run (40 for super charge, 45 for the last glitch). I also swim in the 2nd hub up to cloudy domain because I need the light gems and the wing shield to actually finish the game faster then normal. The 3rd hub is completely glitchless. The 4th hub is completely broken with swim in the air. Right at the start, you can use swim in the air. you do this by using the wing shield as you fall in the water, thus forcing you to the bottom of the lake, then you charge through a wall and keep the swimming animation. You take this swim all the way to the ball gadget, hitting every loading zone as you go through the level. After the ball gadget you proceed to dark mines. Right at the start of dark mines there's a 45 light gem door. You go into the room then get the 24 light gem gadget which allows you to swim in acid lakes. You go in the water with the power-up then clip through the wall and then die on the moneybags pad, thus giving you zombie. You do the glitch again, and then you have swim until the final boss, you just have to hit all of the loading zones up to the final boss. -Basic Clipping: This works like many other methods of clipping, you just put yourself in a very tight spot and forces you oob. My current real time pb for this game is 1:46:xx. I will grab some videos of tricks and post them here later.

Yeah, but Crash Twinsanity is the only game that wasn't released for the gamecube, so we could focus on Twinsanity instead.
